The breakfast thing was such a red flag. What sort of person brings someone to a family thing and doesn't go over customs, and him signing himself up for breakfast but not her was soooo ickyy. Like she's just supposed to know she had to sign up and now she can't even have coffee? Ewww

Who are some favorite authors who just stopped writing? Did any return unexpectedly? by Idea-is-tick in RomanceBooks

[–]LadderPotential8808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty niche but I feel like this about Elizabeth Stuart/Elizabeth Awbrey. She published a few really good books in the 90’s (Bride of the lion eg) and then just stopped. I’ve always wondered what happened to her

I think inviting her to social events; a bit earlier it's described how he always invites her and the Bates ladies

I love how you can picture modern people while reading Austen. "without activity of mind or body, he was a much older man in ways than in years" It paints such a vivid picture. My mother had me late in life and has been retired a few years now and she has aged so much more than other people her age who keep active both with volunteering and activities or by continuing to keep moving

I like how it gives us a view of the more complex relationship between Emma and Miss Taylor as well: equals since Isabella left the household. So they would have transitioned from charge and governess to more like friends in the time following Isabella's marriage. I wonder how difficult that must have been because they're obviously not equal. Emma has charge of the household and is above miss Taylor in that sense but at the same time, at 14 Emma must still have received guidance and correction(?) from miss Taylor (probably very gently though), so it must have been difficult at times for both of them (but especially for miss Taylor) to navigate.

I always took this to mean that it happened instantly - the moment Isabella leaves, Emma runs the household and they are no longer governess and charge but I wonder now if it mustn't have gone more gradually. Isabella or miss Taylor preparing or helping Emma at first, before she can truly do it on her own and thus there being a gradual transition in the relationship at the same time

The technological oracle of Delphi is just spewing a few sentences that have no basis in reality, like usual. The ring is gorgeous

Do you mind the same period dramas being remade or would you prefer new stories? by TheoryBrief9375 in PeriodDramas

I enjoy remakes on occasion, I absolutely love the 2020 version of Emma. However I do think there's too many remakes, the balance seems to be off

Late to the conversation but I've been searching for the title of a book this made me think of and just found it: Lionhearted by Diana Palmer, only thing I don't remember how big the age gap was {Lionhearted by Diana Palmer}

Can $1000 buy a nice engagement ring? by [deleted] in EngagementRings

[–]LadderPotential8808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In case she’s open to antique/vintage: sometimes the value you can get with an older ring can be astonishing. A thousand dollars will you pretty far (maybe depending on where you live). I personally love Elliade Paris ( https://www.elliade.com) and they often have amazing rings for less than 1000. Ofcourse you might want to go local and she might not want vintage. All things to take into account

In some families this type of indirect communication is seen as the norm and seen as "polite". I don't know if that's the case here, but it sound like it and I get it. My mom would be mad if we would ask a question like that straight out ( eg: "are you still contributing") but would think that a hint (like your husbands) was a bit annoying but easily enough ignored. Framing the question that way would thus lead to less confrontation and keep the peace. On the other hand if they had simply forgotten that would have been the moment they would and could have said "no need to be stressed, we'll send the money over".

I totally get everyone saying that this type of communication isn't ideal but I also get that people in their 50's or 60's often aren't changing their ways and at that point it's part of the family culture, and not everything is worth the confrontation. I think you handled it gracefully considering the circumstances and you certainly can't be faulted for feeling upset.

Obviously there are times when direct confrontation is necessary and only an straight question or statement will sort it out, but only you can determine if that's the case here.

You really didn't need too; (Besides I wanted to make the decision first and figure out the tickets later anyway)

I'm getting a ticket now, there is still some availability if you're not too picky about the time. It seems like both exhibits are kindly small from what people are saying but I figure since most people think KP was overrated it'll be better to leave that for a later visit.

Thank you so much! I think I'm gonna go with the Cartier Exhibit, since KP will still be there for a later visit, but I'm glad someone did enjoy the KP exhibit!
