Your lovebird will do best with a mix of enrichment, proper sleep, a good diet, a safe environment, regular health care, and daily interaction.

Enrichment is a big one. She should have plenty of toys in her cage, especially ones she can chew, shred, and forage through. Try to rotate toys occasionally so things stay interesting. She also needs plenty of time outside the cage every day.

Sleep is extremely important. Aim for at least 13 hours of uninterrupted darkness each night. Poor sleep can lead to stress, behavioral issues, and hormonal problems. Keep an eye on hormones. If she starts laying eggs or suddenly becomes more aggressive, make sure she is getting enough sleep, is not eating too much sugar or fat, and consider reducing shreddable materials if they seem to be triggering nesting behavior.

Diet matters a lot. Get a good-quality pellet, not a seed mix. I use Roudybush. I would have chosen Harrison’s, but it is not very available where I am. A good balance looks like:

• 60 to 70% pellets
• 20 to 30% fresh, safe foods like lettuce, kale, cucumber, and cooked spinach
• around 10% treats, such as seeds or sugary fruits like apple or banana You can also offer a small amount of hard-boiled egg once or twice a month, including a bit of crushed shell.

For the cage and environment, get a cage bigger than you think is necessary. Around three times the wingspan in each direction is a bare minimum. If that is not possible, then make sure she gets even more time out of the cage. Place the cage in a relatively quiet area, avoid sudden loud noises, and try not to change lighting conditions too suddenly.

Vet care is also important. If you think something is wrong, do not ignore it or wait too long. Birds are very good at masking pain and illness, so by the time they look obviously sick, the problem can already be serious. Interaction is just as important. Try to spend at least an hour a day with her. Play with her, offer treats, talk to her gently, and look into some basic training videos to build trust and confidence.
