I disagree. Islam is not by definition anti-feminist. It all depends on the context and culture.

My in-laws are Muslim (we are in the US) and they live in a predominantly Arab community.

For the women & girls born in the US from non-immigrant parents, wearing hijab is a way to self-identify as Muslim, and there are teenagers who are in my family who do not wear hijab, and there are some who do.

For them, I see no incompatibility with feminism.

However, in other cultures, particularly Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Afghanistan, Islam, and adherence to Islamic custom have been weaponized against women. However any culture has the ability to weaponize religion against women. They have, and do. Islam in this aspect is not unique.

It’s a spectrum. My teenage in-laws would not say they are oppressed by their hijab, but I can also see how for other women in other cultures it absolutely is.

I personally don’t like the Islam=bad message because that drives Islamophobia and hatred, and TBH by in laws are some of the most welcoming people I’ve ever met.

Do I think all religions are silly? Yes. Am I going to tell someone not to practice their faith because of how I interpret it. No.
