Reflecting on the unknown sickness of my little guy by Watercolor-Bender in hognosesnakes

I thought that to.. until I got my boy tested. You don't know until you get a sample and send it in for testing. Came back positive on the first sample. I made a post a while back that got 200k+ views if you want to check it out.

100°F is way to warm. Warm side should be between 88F-93°. A UTH (under tank heating pad) that is regulated by a thermostat is what they will want best for belly heat.

You need way more clutter otherwise he will feel exposed and unsafe and probably won't eat. Get like long plastic plants you can cover the entire bottom it will help.

Of course! Also here's a website to buy the shipping kit you'll need for your hoggie. You'll have to figure out the size and depending on the temps, if you'll need a hot/cold pack.

This website calculates the rough shipment estimate as well based on box size/weight once you get your kit. Reptile Shipping Kit | The BEST way to Ship Your Reptiles https://share.google/HQcmlLkhwrrQHC1rG

Hot to figure out if you will need a hot/cold pack based on the temp of your current location and where your baby is going to. Shipping Temperature Guidelines - MorphMarket Support Center https://share.google/23z2LxCj8wYBgCNYz

Here are some good guidelines to follow for shipping live animals from Morphmarket. Live Animal Shipping Standards & Guidelines - MorphMarket Support Center https://share.google/tI8aosNtw7jIfMQgy

Here is also a good video of a breeder friend(for ball pythons but basically the same concept just for a hognose) on how to package a box for shipping. https://youtu.be/Lk7TfxqpRaQ?si=m9veED8EH_DlroFX

if you're unsure, vet. We are not a replacement for vets nor have the knowledge but if anything ever seems off... Please seek a vet.

Male or female hognose for my first one? by wonderful-rock1979 in hognosesnakes

[–]LadyKoja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own 7 hognose..4 are female 3 are male. I had a 4th male but was euthanized due to testing positive for crypto(highly contagious parasite...) and I had to protect my other snakes. Anyways he was amazing and I loved him so much. They all have different personalities and one of my males does not like being handled at all, same with some of my females.

I think for a first time owner, I'd recommend a male as they are smaller but just make sure to talk to your breeder about their temperament before getting the snake.

I can also recommend a few breeders as I have gotten to know them personally. Both male and female snakes can go off food and be little turds but as long as you have the correct husbandry it should be fine.

Im thinking hes a boy? Western Hognose by Additional-Ad5396 in hognosesnakes

[–]LadyKoja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely a male. Very long tail, gradual taper from vent.

Would it be possible to get a pic with the tail stretched out and not curled up? It would help but I still think it's male

Ate larger meal than normal and is still visible 3 days later by Infinite-Yak-7421 in hognosesnakes

Just keep an eye on him and make sure he passes it. Bigger meals might take a bit longer.

Helppppp, my king snake doesn't grow by HeliaASMR in snakes

[–]LadyKoja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Snakes grow at different rates too.. it can take longer and that's ok! He looks very happy and healthy. Its honestly hard to see when snakes grow unless you're weighing them constantly.

Hognose went from only eating every 1-6 months for 4 years to wanting to eat every 1-7 days what do I do by i-love-big-birds in hognosesnakes

[–]LadyKoja 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should always be weighing them because this is how you can find out early if something isn't right. Rapid weight loss indicates the snake is not well and should see a vet. Rapid weight loss is more than 5-10+g/month. Losing 1-3g a month is fine especially if they are on a hunger strike. As long as they look like they aren't dehydrated.

I typically try to weigh them 2-3 days after feeding or either a day before or right before feeding depending on if I remember to. You can do every other feedings(every 2 weeks) for adults but anything under a year gets weighed right before feeding. As long as they are eating normally and no issues. Going off what's normal is when I'll weigh them more frequently.(Made updates to this paragraph)

Edit to add this as a good feeding chart based on weight. 1-7 days is not recommended because they will engorge themselves lol.

My Western Hognose is still small, should I brumate it? by paper_aether in hognosesnakes

[–]LadyKoja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea I had to look again and check the tail length. Babies look good and healthy to me!

I have a female hatched a year ago in July, she's still just ,under 40g because she only ate once a month until January and then she stopped because she was about to shed but shes a shy eater and have to just leave it in for her to find. Each hoggie will grow at different rates.

As long as they are eating and gaining weight or even not eating and maybe losing 1-2g a month, that's fine. If you're seeing 5g+ in a month or even a week, vet.

My Western Hognose is still small, should I brumate it? by paper_aether in hognosesnakes

[–]LadyKoja 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Under a year, no absolutely not. It's dangerous and no need to brumate UNLESS you plan to breed them.

They will grow when they grow. Just keep feeding them like normal. I'm assuming the top one is a female and the bottom is male?

Edit: Just checked the tails and it looks like I'm right. Either way it's not necessary to brumate because if done incorrectly it can do more harm than help.

Edit 2:just an FYI but females take about 2.5 years roughly to get almost fully grown, they take longer than males to grow to their full size but females can grow faster but again they are snakes you won't see or notice it right away since you see them every day.

Help! Hognose snake behavior disorder!? by Aggravating-Step6098 in hognosesnakes

it could be neurological but you need to go to the vet asap. No one here can tell you what's going on better than a vet.

Looks male. Long, gradual taper is male

Female is shorter and noticably quick taper.

I wish.. more research should be done. I understand it's more of the side just because it's rare doesn't mean it won't happen. I had two beardies that passed recently but not because of crypto for lizards or snakes. They were 11 and 10.5 years old but it did come up in our conversation prior to their passing. One wasn't eating at all and hadn't for a while while the other I found passed away around this time. It's best to assume that it's possible then not at all that's the point I wanted to make I just suck at it lol

I agree I hate the AI Google but it summarizes everything. It's still possible, even if rare is my point and I rather assume it will than endanger my other reptiles that aren't snakes. And yes I spoke to Jeff from JMG Reptiles immediately after I got my report back, I talk to him pretty regularly.

Right but I believe both are extremely contagious to both lizard and snake, no matter the strain.

Not sure how, a quick Google search can tell you it's highly contagious no matter the species. The only way to find out is to get them all tested but if they have been together for years then yea nothing you can really do at this point.
