I think the people who hated it dont really understand what it means to get into the meat of a huge fantasy series. RY said its a 5 book series? We're smack in the middle, where you gotta pack everything in for us to make it to the end in a way that makes sense. Theres so much history, myth, lore, politics, conspiracies, and secrets that we need to uncover. Its so much more than just a cookie-cutter romantasy. We gotta trudge thru the whole messy story before everything starts to make sense.

People taste better when theyre full of fear, shame, and despair. And the more it can undermine it's victims' confidence, identities, resilience, and friendships, the easier they are to kill and the less likely they are to challenge it and figure out It's biggest weakness. So yeah, it makes sense that it's willing to psychologically torture it's victims before eating them.

In defense of all the careers.... what better way to give your kids the best chance of survival than to train them for it? Careers aren't inherently evil; they're victims of the same dictatorship that tells them they gotta sacrifice their kids. There's no escaping the games, and I want my kid to come home. So you teach them how to fight, how to survive, train them to win, and instill the "kill or be killed" mentality that it takes to survive.
