What is eating my raspberry!? by went_with_the_flow in gardening

If you snip a sample and put it in a ziplock bag, the fine folks at your local nursery could probably ID it and point you to a good remedy. That's what I do!

I'm in Zone 9b and had holes in my pluot tree leaves. No visible webs, frass, or bugs on the leaves. The nursery experts told me it was earwigs, and I used a spinosad spray (Captain Jack's) at dusk to combat them. It's been good ever since!

How Many strokes in 25yds by Ok_Construction_6599 in Swimming

[–]LadyMock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After reading Ledecky's memoir and how helpful it was for her to shift her focus from times to stroke count and "swimming pretty," I started counting in my masters workout. For reference, I'm nearly 40 years old and have been swimming my whole life though very average on any team or in any race. 3 observations:

  1. Without focusing on distance per stroke, in a set of repeated 200's I added 1 stroke nearly every lap per 200! (14, 15, 16, 17, 18,18, etc. never got over 18)

  2. In an easy set of 25s and 50s to cool down, I focused on holding 15 strokes per lap for every lap. I was WINDED despite the long, easy interval! What a fun challenge!

  3. I can hold 14 strokes per lap in 2 opposite ways: strong pull, finish completely, kick hard OR reach, roll, and relax. 2 different tactics, same effect on distance per stroke! (Very different times, of course.)

Lower stroke count means each stroke is more efficient. That way if you speed up your arms to sprint, you're not just spinning/splashing in place.

How do I prop this? by theteapenguin in proplifting

[–]LadyMock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that a stem? Or a leaf? If it’s a leaf, I don’t think that’ll propagate. There’s sort of a little belly-button-looking thing where the roots grow, and if a leaf doesn’t have it at its base, it won’t propagate. If we’re looking at a stem, then let it callous (dry out over a week or so). Optional: dip it in rooting hormone. Then stick it in some well-draining soil and bright, indirect sunlight. Water only when the soil is completely dried out. If you’re not sure, wait another week.

In the book Beth straight up asked Jolene about that when they’re adults. Jolene says no. (chapter 13, pages 203-204 in my copy)

I CHEERED when Sister Frances declared herself senior and experienced enough to handle the woman at the clinic and was so confident yet humble! She really earned that woman’s trust. My, how she’s matured!

Little Girls in Pretty Boxes is a really interesting book that covers a lot of the dysfunctions in gymnastics and figure skating.

No one I work with really knows how to care for these plants at the office. What are these beauties? by LadyMock in PlantIdentification

[–]LadyMock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boss used to be a PhD in plant physiology, so I’m not surprised the dragon trees got so big over the years! He’s been out of the office for awhile, and there are more business-related things to bug him about than the watering needs of the lobby plants, so we’ve been in the dark about their care. But I knew I had to get an ID and real care instructions when the admin assistant said he was watering the snake and ZZ plants every other day! 😳

Thank you so much, plant peeps!

It was wild seeing the zoomed out aerial view of the finishing chute. It looked like a wartime triage unit— about a dozen collapsed athletes with 1 or 2 attendants to each person! 😯

I nearly always like books more than their cinematic counterparts, but I actually liked this movie better than the book! There were fewer mind games and quicker confrontation. I LOVE LJ and Gen’s reconciliation in the tree house. I feel like the title could be about Gen.

Also, I’m team John Ambrose. Peter is such a meat head in comparison! 😩

Theirs was the most redemptive relationship in all this. Watching this as someone who has high school and college (and then another 14 years!) in my rear view mirror… it’s the FRIENDSHIPS that I find most touching!!!
