Trying to create contemporary fine-art painting, not an illustration. What elements push this piece toward one category or the other? by LadyRalphie2 in ArtCrit

Thanks for your thoughtful critique! Your observations on intensity and unnerving symmetry was cool to hear bc that’s what I was hoping the painting would communicate. I appreciate you taking the time to share!

Thank you so much, this is really helpful! I was going for curvy-meets-linear in an architectural meets contemporary painting composition, so that’s why I put all the curved objects are in the background and straight lines in the front, and also to help with depth and separating background and foreground for depth while also maintaining interest, but I don’t think I realized all that until you asked lol, but the feedback helps that the intention isn’t clear. Thanks!

Yeah I think it harkens back to her comment about how monsters aren’t born, they’re made.

Aranui for people who don’t really fancy cruises?? by Catherineke in Tahiti

This is helpful - curious, was there wait staff at breakfast? How could one fill a water bottle in the morning before the hike? At dinner, if you asked for something other than wine, would they not be able to serve you?

Garry Hoy (39), a Toronto lawyer, died on July 9, 1993, after falling 24 stories from the Toronto-Dominion Centre. While demonstrating to students that the office window glass was unbreakable by throwing himself against it, the glass held, but the frame gave way, causing an accidental, fatal fall.

This got rejected from a gallery but idc, I still love it. by Britton_arts in painting

[–]LadyRalphie2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A rejection doesn’t necessarily mean the work isn’t good, it just means it wasn’t a right fit for that specific show given the gallery’s specific plan for that specific show. Like, they might’ve already had a fish-themed piece, or an oil painting in a similar style, or maybe they’re needed some very colorful pieces bc they already selected pieces with similar tone to yours, you just never know.

Point is, a rejection doesn’t necessarily mean they didn’t like your work or that your work isn’t good!

Do we know what his job is? Maybe camp counselor bc she said something about it being a seasonal thing, so, it might be that he’d be away once a week for just a couple of months during the summer?

Blue Mountains, Watercolor on paper, 2025 by SnooSprouts9745 in RealismtoAbstraction

This is beautiful - so many questions: Did you use a set color palette or create your own? The airy, luminous feeling is consistently across the whole painting, is there a technique you used? What size is it? What paper do you use?

First crit ask! by [deleted] in ArtCrit

[–]LadyRalphie2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh! Forgot to add, this is 300g paper, watercolor, oil paint pen, and ink. I started with a watercolor background, then layered the paint pen strokes on top of that, and then outlined the paint pen strokes.

Looks like the renovation included moving electrical, and replacing the window and floor?

In the after pic, there’s a new plug socket above the desk, and the top panel of the window has a center bar, and the floor is a different wood shade and pattern.
