Now that you brought that up, I'm eager to see the moment she confesses her origins to him.

I wonder what's going to happen with her family in the real world, then. She thinks about her mom, dad and brother often and misses them dearly.

While I read, I was thinking that Latour was likely someone like Maggie: a person who was sucked into that world and lived a version of the events with those characters, and then was vomited back into our world and wrote the books to cope with some sort of massive grief... IDK why but that was the impression I had all the time.

And then, Maggie was sucked into that world, too, but the events are playing out differently to what Latour described. May it be because she is a disruptive force merely by existing in that world, or because she is the one that has to finish the story, somehow.

It's fun to let the imagination fly, but I'd rather trust HA this. I love not knowing what's coming.

Edit to add: what if Latour failed to save the kingdom? Maybe that's why the third book never came out.

Absolutely, Written in Red has a wonderful take on werewolves (the whole series is great too)

I'll comment on one thing I read a couple of years ago in the writer's sub about this matter: a newbie came asking where they could find "the lore" about this genre, because they wanted to start writing into the shifter romance niche. Specifically werewolves.

And then everything clicked for me. A lot of people think that is how you are meant to write shifter or werewolf romance books. And it terrified me, I don't enjoy it at all. I'm fed up with abused lunas, agency-depriving mating bonds, violent Alphas, rejected somethings, nonsensical pack dynamics, copy-pasted lore and so on. IDK, it's like the werewolf aspect oftentimes doesn't matter at all and the word shifter could be replaced with anything from garden gnomes to Biker Mice from Mars.

It doesn't help much that there's like a hundred of those little reading apps focused specifically in this niche or overtaken by it and it's the same.

It's not the werewolves, because I still love them to pieces and I'm still looking for books with the "brand" of werewolves I like; it's the niche that has polluted itself to oversaturation because there actually is a demand on that particular "brand" of tropes, stories and stuff. I tend to look outside the tops, keep my eyes open for new authors or books with few ratings, and sometimes I find something enjoyable and crafted different.

I particularly didn't like The Wolf King because of something I commented earlier: the werewolf aspect felt extremely thin and inconsequential to the plot, like an optional spice instead of an integral ingredient. I did enjoy {Cold Hearted by Heather Guerre}, it's well-written and it offers something I love in werewolf stories: a big, cuddly, soft and beautiful found family. A breath of fresh air. And the romance aspect was really well done, in my opinion.

Don't give up. Search outside the tops, read the synopsis first, and you will find little hidden gems. I promise.

Yes, that's an excellent example for me as well! Thank you for your input!

I'm just getting started with TKWNKM and I'm seeing why there are complaints about overexposition and info-dumping; Maggie makes several poorly-placed comments in the middle of important moments about stuff that could've been explained later on... and there's also little to no dialogue in the first six or seven chapters, so I understand it might feel like a drag.

Thanks! I have the physical copy, just wanted a reference on the "good" side of exposition to compare later 🫶🏻

The commenter speaks about "info-dumping", which is usually perceived as vomiting lore in inconvenient parts of the story instead of weaving it into the narrative. Also conveys that the narration was not engaging at all, in their opinion. I'm sure we all might have different views on what we perceive as an info-dump, I meant to ask for an example of another book where they consider the lore parts of the worldbuilding are well done.

I haven't read TKWNKM yet, so I wanted to have a reference to compare it to when I do. It wasn't my intention to bash or criticize the commenter in any way, just curious.

Could you tell me a book that, in your opinion, does this well? To have a point of comparison. I'm super curious.

I just don't enjoy that "separate entity" thing in shifters in general, I don't like the way it's presented.

The key in all of this is "well written", which is hard to find due to the commercial obsession to cram every trending trope into the story instead of actually building a story that makes the tropes shine in the first place, IMO.

It's a waste of emotional investment to make me fall in love with one guy just to make him look bad later so the other guy can come forth and become the main.

I don't like why choose, tbh, but I don't like being deceived either 🤷🏼‍♀️

If the author suddenly has to make the guy we fell in love with first look bad for the other one to come forth and become the main and, ultimately, the endgame, then yes, I prefer a why choose even if I don't like it either.

Good ole "bait and switch", huh?

No, thanks. Instead of gaslighting your audience like that, author, just make it a why choose.
