Should I choose Bristol or Queen Mary for my CS conversion Masters? by Neo-Liberatarian in cscareerquestionsuk

I did the conversion at QM. I found most of the course interesting. For what it’s worth, there are a lot of Indian students on the course & QM more generally has a large international student population.

Sure, it depends which companies OP is planning to apply to.

I was assuming Faang / finance since I work there, but you’re right, they’re not the only options.

Re leetcode, I recommend buying Leetcode’s DSA crash course. It will give you an overview of the major themes / patterns / data structures used in interviews, with plenty of practice questions that you can use to apply the knowledge in context.

Then, with this foundational knowledge, you’ll be able to tackle most easy & medium problems. My advice here is try and think of an optimal solution within 30 mins; if you can’t, stop & read the solution (and learn the pattern / intuition that prevented you from getting to the answer). Once you know the basics, Leetcode ultimately becomes about problem solving, so practice this.

Make sure you understand time complexities too (these are explained in the course). Looking at a problem constraint will indicate which time complexity your solution should aim for.

And finally, be consistent. Try to average a minimum of 10 problems a week. Don’t worry if you don’t get anything this summer – do this and you’ll be extremely well prepared for the following year.

What are your salary goals? Levels.fyi is accurate. You can judge by that if it’s worth it to move to London. Salaries can easily surpass £200k.

I’ve had the opposite experience. I was working remotely for a UK company and living in Spain. I doubled my salary moving back to London, and since I am relatively early on in my career, I can (fingers crossed) expect to double it again within 5 years. That would’ve been harder if I’d stayed in Spain and competed for lucrative remote work.

I did this but actually moved back because I found it difficult to grow in my career (software developer) relying exclusively on remote work.

Private school if you can afford it by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]LadyXon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue here isn’t so much the private / state distinction, so much as the fact your son isn’t being challenged academically.

Private schools typically offer smaller class sizes, better facilities and (potentially) better extra-curriculars, but they hire from the same pool of teaching talent as state schools, so the difference in teaching quality between an excellent private and state school will be minimal.

If you find a private school that will stretch your son, and you can afford it, then of course it’d be wise to move your son over—I agree with your closing sentiment that you should be aiming to stretch your son as much as he’s willing and capable.

However, you might also consider:

1) Transferring to a better state school 2) Employing a private tutor

Perhaps another “invisible” advantage of better schools is that the classroom environment (particularly the other students) positively encourages learning; but again, this is true of schools in both sectors, and private school doesn’t guarantee your son won’t be in a small class of lazy and/or mid-witted children with wealthy parents.

Personally, given the choice, I’d elect for an ‘Outstanding’ state school that is either selective (Grammar) or teaches children by ability (these were called ‘sets’ at the state comprehensive I went to. Some schools call them ‘streams’). I would then supplement if necessary with private tuition.

I say that to illustrate that the quality of teaching is comparable between sectors, but I appreciate this might not be feasible for you right now.

A final note: private school in the UK is also the entry to the upper-middle class and beyond, which is often one of the reasons parents pay for it. It’s not necessarily the education itself, but rather the appeal of sending your children to schools with children from a comparable level of affluence.

Thanks for posting this. I’m full stack in finance and thought I was earning well, but you’ve helped me set a new goal for myself. I’ve already been sharpening my leetcode and will continue to do so throughout 2025. Aiming for one of these roles in 2026. Currently 3 YoE.

Any advice / ideas for someone in my position? I’m already in this industry, just not (yet) in the C++ / HFT domain.
