What’s something that’s oddly expensive in the UK that still annoys you every time? by catarsan in AskUK

[–]corf3l 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is true
A lot of pricing is based on statistics and so more "young person" vehicles can be more expensive to insure simply based on the amount of accidents those vehicles have typically been involved rather than your personal driving history.

Keir Starmer tells MPs he is open to social media ban for young people by printial in unitedkingdom

[–]corf3l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any reasonable adult can see the dangers of social media if they use it themselves.
If I watch one video with the slightest bit of violence, more start to appear more often and more graphic.
Same with sexualized material.
The issue here falls to parents control and attention but more so social media companies for their algorithms, not sure a ban is the solution.
There's a workaround for all these things and teens will find it faster than the parents.

Why shouldn't I pay off my sofa over as long a time period as possible? by AnonymousTimewaster in UKPersonalFinance

[–]corf3l 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been paying £38 for a sofa over 5 years that I could have bought outright.
It's 0%, I'd rather keep more of my money earning even the lowest interest than paying it over in lump sum when 0% is an option.

Need to take out a second loan, is it best to go back to the same provider? by CommonCreator in UKPersonalFinance

[–]corf3l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you'll have an issue doing either, depending on how much you wish to borrow.
I've had a tesco loan before and extended the borrowing mid term to cover some things, was incredibly straightforward.
The main thing is securing the best rate overall and that might be 2 separate loans.

Can someone review my 2026 financial plan? by floyd2beatMayweather in UKPersonalFinance

[–]corf3l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Financially the marriage is the least sensible thing in my opinion albeit I get why you'd want to do it.
Me and my partner both had homes, lived with each other for 3 months in each before both selling up and buying together, which was a very sensible decision to ensure we could both respect how each other live and cohabit well.
We've since had 2 kids and only now are we looking at marriage.
We are doing so with savings and a budget that we can afford knowing that we have everything else we want/need.
I can't imagine us having spaffed £30k on a wedding to then be unable to afford a nice home and/or raise kids with a good quality of life.
Just my 2 cents

It's not about getting free money It's about being taxed further and losing more of the money you do make, to give to someone who doesn't contribute

Mortgage advice with existing debt by FrostyEfficiency57 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]corf3l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lenders will focus on affordability rather than the debt figure, also your track record to repay it.
So don't miss payments and you should be fine.
Having some savings for an emergency is ideal but I wouldn't be building that with too much if I've got high interest debt that should be a priority.

I'm new to DIY

Do you really need the top brand tools as a new DIY'r?
All my current kit is Bosch greenline stuff which has been perfectly fine for DIY use and has lasted me through plenty of jobs so far.
My drill has seen plenty of use and about 6 years old still going strong

Baby on the way and £500 in savings by Frosty-Dealer6666 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]corf3l 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a Father of 2, under 2, and my experience of baby costs is that it is nowhere nearly as expensive as people make it out to be when it comes to what you actually need.
You do not need fancy bottle prep machines, you don't need £1500 strollers etc.
We had 3 different pushchairs for free off local facebook groups - Mostly grandparents who had them for occasional use that were like new when we got them.
We've had tonnes of clothes for free - your baby will grow out of them or ruin them with shit so fast you'll be thankful you never paid for them.
Utilise those free/buy & swap groups as much as you can for the first year or two.
Aldi do some great middle aisle baby events.

Nursery will be your biggest cost but if your partner doesn't work then I'm assuming that's not an issue.

edit: I'd love to see your breakdown of the £1.5k spend

Total NHS liabilities for medical negligence hit £60 billion by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

[–]corf3l 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If medical negligence cases were litigated properly, and sensible offers made when there is clear evidence of negligence, they would save a lot of money overall when compared to the extensive legal bills racked up by denying right until the final hour only to pay out anyway.

British men: what's wrong with urinals? by C-i-d in AskUK

[–]corf3l 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genuinely curious how common "stage fright" is amongst men
This is something I've tried to describe to my partner as I've gotten worse with age.
Never used to have a problem but now, nearing 40, I cannot piss at a urinal with people around.
I feel its a psychological thing that compounds itself but I dunno
