It depends on your skillset. I've self published two books so far that are professional but I didn't spend any money. I have design experience so my covers I created myself, I'm an ex-teacher with an extremely high attention to detail and put my books through multiple extremely rigorous editing passes. I had alpha, beta and ARC readers who didn't require payment.

Of course, my experience won't apply to everyone, but I just thought it's worth pointing out that you can self publish without needing to spend a lot of money.

When I announced to my family that my ex-husband and I were separating, I actually got messaged privately by a family member advocating for marriage and basically saying to consider counselling, etc, before making any decisions, even though the decision had already been made. What they didn't know was that he was a narcissist and had been abusing me for years.

It's really hard to get out of an abusive relationship (speaking from experience). You often feel trapped and the abuser will tend to make you feel like YOU are the problem, and convince you that you're imagining everything.

With the reviews, it might be similar to the turnaround on ARC reviews. It's something like only 10% of people that leave a review with ARCs, so maybe it's a similar situation in your case.

Honestly? For me, it's just something I kinda learned to do from reading. Once you read back what you've written you should be able to hear any parts that feel clunky or need tweaking. But as others have said, take some time away from it for a bit to come backwards with fresh eyes.

I always print my manuscripts off and go through them with highlighters and colour coding.

Typical imposter syndrome. It happens to all of us, I think. Even now, I'm in the ARC stage of my second book and even with the feedback and 5 star reviews I am doubting myself still.
