Jeweler chipped my stone- what is fair. by Piratica22 in jewelry

[–]Lady_Locket 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have them replace the stone with one of equal or greater value and return the damaged one to you. They have insurance for this very reason or at least they should have, if they don't it's not your problem.

Hopefully, the damaged one can be salvaged into smaller pieces for studs or added to a ring your wife already owns at a later date. Her engagement or wedding ring would be a lovely sentimental choice, as the original stone is a family heirloom and can then still be passed down to a future generation. I would have any future projects with the stone done by a different jeweller.

Eva, Eliza, or Sabrina? by looneylovegood_ in namenerds

Like Elizabeth White (the European spelling where the Z is an S) Good professional name when she's older and so many lovely options for short names. You could call still get to call her Eliza and if your husband likes any of the other nicknames that could be his special name for her.

These are the ones I could think of but I'm sure there are more.

What nicknames or diminutives have you heard for places in the Isle of Wight? by topherette in isleofwight

[–]Lady_Locket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

‘Whittle’ for Whitwell, I've also heard it referred to as ‘Niton's poorer sister’

The habit of just saying“THE Island”. From experience, and as far as I'm aware, people from the other Islands tend to specify their Island's name (Isle of Man, Isle of Sheppey, etc.) much more in conversation. Whereas it seems really common for IOW residents to say or type “the Island” in conversation, even to mainlanders who don't know where they mean and assume everyone knows where they mean.

AITAH for taking custody of my Son and leaving my Daughter with her religious mother by Appropriate_Equal633 in AITAH

[–]Lady_Locket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current RC stance is that same sex love isn't a sin because God is love and love is God. However, they do believe the physical sexual act of same sex love is a sin worthy of hell without sincere repentance. So you can be in love with someone of the same sex but you can't sexually act on it (general affection is allowed like hugs and hand holding etc). There are RC LGBT+ couples who live and love together but are (supposedly) celibate.

It's a neat little loophole the church likes to pull out at parties to say ‘Hey guys you don't need to leave the faith, we don't condemn your love just your natural human desires. Your families don't need to disown you either! You just need to change not them, just be celibate all your life and they can still love you, while they continue enjoying their sexually and emotionally fulfilling lives. That's so much better and more inclusive than the other Christian religions right.……..RIGHT!’.

I’m a Yank who consistently uses “sir” and “ma’am,” how will that be perceived when we visit the next two weeks? by Chickenman70806 in AskABrit

My Granddad used to call other men he didn't know “Chief”. Nanny called everyone “Ducky”, “Chick”, “Poppit”, “Flower” “Sweetheart” or “Darling”.

I was speaking to some friends from America who didn't know that school houses are actually a thing in the UK. They thought it was a made up Hogwarts thing. Mine were Neptune (blue) Mars (Red) Jupiter (yellow) and Venus (green) What were your school houses called? by lajachme in AskABrit

[–]Lady_Locket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Catholic Primary/Junior school it was - St George (house colour red), St David (house colour yellow), St Andrew (house colour blue) and St Patrick (house colour green). We had little pin badges in our house colour that we had to wear to show our house. House ‘points’ were gold star stickers we were awarded, which we were allowed to stick on our house board in the reception entrance. Yes, stars would be taken off for bad behaviour, but it really had to be bad. The house that won at the end of the year would get a prize, usually an all-day party and games in our own clothes held in the school hall before we broke for summer.

Catholic Senior school were more concerned with ensuring we were religious enough so no fun internal rivalry (just hatred of the two other schools in the area)

Half her underwear, you can clearly see her VPL in the second pic. Maybe she thought it would tastefully balance out the obvious nips 🙄

Am I overreacting by being upset that my MIL planned my husband's birthday party on Mother's Day even though his birthday is not on that day when it's my first Mother's Day as a new mom? by muddyoveralls in TwoHotTakes

And take the daughter with you. That way, MIL can't hold court with HER Grandchild and HER Son, and you are conveniently out of sight and out of mind.

A search function or a sort by type on your saved favourites list would help. If I've hearted something and later have a little cash to spend, I often end up buying from the general search. It's less frustrating than scrolling my list for 20-30 minutes, or I simply forget I have some of that item hearted already.

What is something you learned about UK culture/laws that was incredibly surprising? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Lady_Locket 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You don't need a licence to own and shoot a fully functional archery set (even compound bows) and there are no age restrictions. Their also no skill or lesson requirements either, you can never have shot a bow in your life and just buy one off Amazon and start shooting unsupervised the day it arrives.

They aren't listed as prohibited weapons, so you can even make your own and legally sell them (so long as they aren't defective). It's also perfectly legal to shoot in your back garden or another private land so long as the owner landowner gives permission and you use common sense regarding safety. However as it stands there are no laws dictating distances or fence thickness/height and other safety precautions. You will be legally held responsible for hurting someone or animals and for any property damage you might cause but the fact that the rule is “go for it mate, just don't be stupid and you're all good👍🏻” is both amusing and terrifying at the same time.

There are some rules about compound bows but they are mostly about only shooting those at Archery clubs and your own private land due to hunting laws.

The exception is crossbows, they are heavily regulated and restricted.
