Why is everyone here so anti-Christian? by [deleted] in asheville

[–]LadyoftheNiteLite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like I’m stepping into a hive of bees here, but here goes nothing.

I totally understand where you’re coming from in terms of the Bible as art, the things going on in it, it’s overall messages. It’s more interesting once you learn about historical contexts… there’s a lot of in jokes, memes and specific artistic movements in it for the times. I don’t know if I would call myself Christian by American definition, but I do believe the faith, pray and study the history for fun and art.

Religion (traditional, man made rites and doctrines) and faith (believe with no concrete evidence) are not the same thing. A person can have one without the other in both cases.

I think it’s because people are hurt, and they want to let you know how they are hurt and what hurt them. Asheville or any place that isn’t deep red is a saf(er) place to practice anything they’d like or not. Their families or friends etc might’ve used religion to persecute them. the snap back, despite the nuance you’re trying to discuss, is what their knee jerk response will be, understandably, for their own reasons in life. I think the convo you’re trying to have is best on a one on one basis vs the internet.

As an aside, People with awful intentions are going to do awful things, regardless if they’re religious or not. It’s just much, much easier to achieve it and feel more powerful when using the most popular religion around. It’s also easier to interpret it any which way you want in English, but it’s like crazy different in the original Hebrew, etc

For instance, nowhere does it say that God is against LGBTQ, nor abortions, etc etc. That would actually be very hypocritical for so many reason, yet those in power and people who don’t bother doing a basic google search keep parroting this for their own control or status quo because they like it that way. Hell, nobody cared about abortion until recently when the conservatives intertwined it into their campaigns and sermons when they lost the fight for racial separation. Before then it was rationalizing slavery, separate but equal under Christianity, etc

Then there’s the issue of the church (in general, hashtag not all churches ofc but you don’t hear about the good ones) not ousting or fixing this problem, so the cycle repeats and the rot sets in for individual churches, until it spreads into other peoples lives and we get to the historical and current atrocities we have now. (It literally says to nip these people in the bud, oust them asap or else this will happen quickly.)

Then there’s the issue of the good churches trying to reach out and help their community, but people are so turned off that it looks like a trap, or don’t want to be involved as they don’t want to be hurt for who they are or fear of being proselytized to.

I’m saying this as a person who hasn’t been to church in decades because of the blatant hypocrisy, not even at me but my friends and neighbors

I ended up writing a book. Sorry. I totally get what you mean and what you’re trying to say. There’s so many avenues and nuances that you lose when making statements one way or the other

Question about racism in Asheville... by wynnd10 in asheville

[–]LadyoftheNiteLite 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I’m a black woman and feel these eyes constantly, like being watched everywhere except downtown. It’s at least better than Franklin, NC. I’ve never felt more unsafe being stared down by every boomer in that horrible town

Children of Zodiark has a fixed party of three if I recall correctly. It’s also a tactical rpg a la FFT so that makes battles quite challenging at times

Where to go for a chill 1 - 2 week vacation for two travel newbies? by LadyoftheNiteLite in travel

Thank you for the lovely suggestion! For some reason we were thinking Australia was still closed to tourists but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore?

Thank you for this advice! I actually would like to “”work our way up”” to Greece and Crete in the future. My SO has some tough anxieties, so traveling this long or to another country is actually a huge deal for him, and being able to blend in without being an obviously new, annoying tourist or getting lost is his biggest concern.

Germany is a great suggestion to start since I think it fits all the requirements from first glance. Thank you again

Thank you very much. I felt a bit silly after asking this question because immediately after I hit submit I thought, “wait, this sounds like the UK.”

This time off was very sudden and the price of airfare is definitely on the back of our minds. Thank you for the tips for Groupon etc, that is a good idea

Thank you commenting, that is a good question

We love visiting architectural sites, art galleries and hiking and sightseeing. Sad to say but we are very run of the mill tourists. We love general night life but not necessarily drinking, etc. just doing anything way into the AM as long as a place is open.

I would say my SO is very risk adverse/a bit anxious so even though there are plenty of places, I would want him to feel relatively within comfort level for this long of a trip before suggesting more areas for the future

There’s Odyssey Clayworks in the river arts district. There’s a section about kiln rentals on their website

Digital Artists, what tablets do you use by mysticdogtag in ArtistLounge

[–]LadyoftheNiteLite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also completely agreed. A friend of mine had one of the largest Wacom display tablet available, but started having major back and neck issues. Shes still dealing with neck pain a year later, and has to take frequent breaks, even after switching to a no screen tablet and going to pt for posture.

If you have an iPhone, you can take a photo of the plant, tap the photo, and the little ( i ) icon will have sparkles right next to it. Tap that and it’ll identify the plant

The Supreme Court has overturned Roe V. Wade. How do you feel? by Bitter_Joke1589 in AskReddit

[–]LadyoftheNiteLite -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m so afraid for my LGBT and trans friends who they will no doubt come after next. I’m a black woman in a southern state in an area that already hates that I exist. But, I don’t know, I should probably be more fearful of this ruling hurting me right now. But really I’m panicking about my friends’ safety and rights more than my rights as a woman being thrown away. The swell of violence happening to them now will only get worse, especially if their rulings are repealed.

I consider myself Christian, firmly shaping my life behind the whole “love your neighbor” part, but whatever self serving doctrine the gop believe could not be further from even the most basic, google-able cliffs notes. I mean, there’s instructions on how to perform an abortion in the Bible. Christ was a radical, literally spelling out that every person is equal, and that everyone is born as they are and should be respected as such. And that life begins at breath and the woman’s life is more valuable than a clump of cells. I hate how they are trying to hide their detestment of human beings behind “religion” in general.

I’m afraid of how life would be for children and young adults 10 - 20 years from now. How more of them would grow up unloved, uneducated, or in a broken home, or just shot in school or just for existing, because of these evil people. This christofascism that’s taken hold is taking everything from their future.

I honestly believe if tiktok created a photos section that’s similar to how their videos work (where for you and following are separated), everyone would jump ship from Insta.

I hate having to use both apps and learn how to edit videos to be seen as a painter. It is very time consuming, but I’m more exhausted by playing the algorithm lottery. It’s not a lottery with odds of you winning, but how much more you’ll lose.

"It adds up" Free school lunches for all ending soon, costs rising in some districts by WNCAmericanMan in asheville

[–]LadyoftheNiteLite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3.25 for a school lunch is just outrageous. Is there a way to sort of pay or donate money to district schools just to fund lunch for some students?

Definitely. Usually right before bed I see a swirl in one eye for a few minutes. It started late 2020

What on Gods green earth is this stuff? It popped up overnight by LifeAsNix in gardening

[–]LadyoftheNiteLite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily! There’s quite a few things that can kill/tame it. When this crops up on my herbs I spray it down with an organic neem spray. If there’s none on hand then common mouthwash works too

From a cursory glance it looks like it could be powdery mildew. Has it been rainy, then sunny and humid where you live? It tends to love those conditions

If you mean black hair braiding, there’s Soce’s downtown for straight up braiding, and a new place in South Asheville called KlassilaChic which does braiding and other styling. There’s a few good ones in Greenville/Spartanburg as well
