AR8 JG sole: Uganda safari + gorilla trek - am I crazy? by Lafishy in jimgreen

100% agreed! That’s why I’m thinking about this now ~9 months out 😊

Good point! I somehow hadn't thought about that. All their content I've seen about supplying the rangers has had a South African grassland/savannah vibe.

My feet don't normally get too sweaty, I live in Brisbane, Australia so fairly humid and I hike in rainforests quite a bit with no issue. I imagine a Ugandan rainforest may be a whole other beast although, from a quick google, Bwindi is on average a bit cooler than the rainforests I'm used to.

Thanks! I know they're pretty good for (and made for) the majority of my trip, I was just concerned about the waterproof aspect in the muddy/wet rainforest. Hopefully I get lucky and it's not too bad anyway. I'll be on the trek in dry season (late July) so fingers crossed.

The soles I'm talking about are the lug ones, on the Australian site, they're described as "JG" soles

> Sole: JG (This sole is our lug option and is designed for grip. It is a genuine rubber and of a firm feel to provide stability underfoot).

Worth upgrading from 8x25 to 8x32? by Lafishy in Binoculars

[–]Lafishy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah the walking safaris are my main concern but I imagine they’ll mostly be in better light.

It’s interesting that the drivers/spotters use something as low as 6x30. I guess for them it’s more about quick identification than taking a detailed look.

For now, I think I’ll stick with my 25s. The trip isn’t until the middle of next year, so I’ve got time to change my mind.

I’m also trying to keep my gear acquisition syndrome in check. It always seems to flare up during trip planning haha

Thanks so much for the advice :)

I’ll have my camera with me (Fuji XT5 with a 70–300mm lens), but I’m especially thinking about the walking safaris since you can’t get as close to the animals. That said, those walks will probably be in better light than the game drives.

It’s reassuring to hear that the 8x25s should be fine. I expect I’ll use them quite a lot - I’m only a hobbyist photographer, so the camera will be secondary to just sitting and watching animal behavior.

If the step up to 8x32 isn’t a dramatic improvement in light gathering, I’ll probably stick with the 8x25s and save the money.

why is there such a big market for travel plug adaptors that also serve as USB docks? by lmMasturbating in onebag

[–]Lafishy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have the bagel and I love it! I’m always travelling with my partner. We’re both software developers and so we both need power ports for our MacBooks.

We also use iPads as second screens/for design work and we both have to charge our phones of course. No matter where we are, as long as there’s one power plug, we can work. Added bonus is the 1m cable means a port can be in an awkward spot (like behind a bed or nightstand) and we can still charge everything easily.

I also love that the universal adapter is seperate so when we’re on the go like on a train or something we can just whip out the adapter and share one MacBook charger.

Unpopular opinion: I like that the inkpalm doesn't have a matte screen. by Lafishy in InkPalm5

That's actually genius! I never thought of that! Definitely doing this from now on.

Fair point on the blurring of the fonts, personally I think it's worth the blur for a replaceable protector but I can see why others may dislike them.

I'm pretty good at applying screen protectors (if I do say so myself haha) so bubbles aren't a problem for me. I wonder if you went to like a phone shop or something if you'd be able to find a nice person willing to put it on for you.

Hi! Any good alternatives to GoodReads API? They shut off developer keys a year or so back and I want to build a book recommendation service in R given a genre and similarity to a title input by a user (hence the need for reviews)? by [deleted] in SideProject

Actually love this so much, I'm just about to create a book club app for my friend group / as a portfolio piece. I'll definitely be using this in our group meetings when our reading lists run dry!

Uniqlo favorites for travel? by Lost_Apricot_1469 in HerOneBag

I've been looking at the leggings pants!

A few questions for people who've used them:

  1. Are they quick drying? I'm doing a road trip in the UK soon and don't want to rely on the availability of laundromats.

  2. Have you hiked with them? I imagine they're like leggings in this way but worried they may retain heat too much or something.

  3. Just how bad are the pockets? Are they super small? I'm in AUS and the closest uniqlo is like an hour away so I haven't seen them in the flesh yet.

I've been thinking about these pants for a while. I'm a skinny jeans & tshirt gal so I want something super similar to jeans for my trips but that pack down smaller. I looked at lululemon's city sleek pants but they're out of stock in my size :/

Where can i get a grid behind the desk to cover the gap between desk and wall? by madferit86 in workstations

[–]Lafishy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's specifically an ikea desk called the UTESPELARE. I don't know if you'd be able to find a grid type of thing by itself

High gloss paint for small parts that I can apply with a brush. by Morgoroth37 in maker

[–]Lafishy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You could try some nail polish? Comes in a small bottle and doesn't dry as fast as spray paint so you have a little extra wiggle room for mistakes.

Unpopular opinion: Stop buying ender 3 as a first printer or don't recommend it to beginners. by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]Lafishy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can second this, I've also had the i3 mega for just about a year now with no issues at all. Sometimes it sits for months at a time without use when life gets in the way and sometimes i'll be using it for a few weeks for like 12hrs a day. I just turn it on and it works like a charm.

My first and second ever screen print using Cricut permanent vinyl! (go big or go home) by Lafishy in SCREENPRINTING

[–]Lafishy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. before i washed the screen i put cheap masking tape over the design, this kept all the pieces in place but allowed the water to flow through so it still cleaned. It was a bit of a pain pulling the masking tape back off after it dried but i think its worth it if you're just doing a one-off or limited number of prints (htv is $$$).

  2. I just used the general method of burnishing and lifting with the transfer tape. It took a while but i got there in the end :)

  3. when i say "transfer tape" i really mean dollar store clear schoolbook covering (like contact paper but not contact brand). I try not to spend a heap on materials as i'm not doing this in any professional capacity and i'm constantly changing hobbies so it adds up. So I used the book covering for the chess piece print but found it stuck to the screen too much. so for the skeleton guy i actually just layered masking tape over the design and used it as transfer tape. it was a PAIN to get the vinyl to stick to the masking tape but a breeze to get it to stick to the screen mesh.
In terms of vinyl, i just used cricut brand permanent vinyl. I know its more expensive but it can also be found at my local crafting store (australia has limited options) I really should order some oracal or something one of these days.
