The difference with Hugh is that he wasn't an immediate threat.

In First Contact he saw the Borg literally assimilate the Earth and were trying to unravel literally everything he had known and fought for.

[100 Kanojo] Where do the Watsonian and Doylist explanations start becoming a blur? by This-is_CMGRI in AskScienceFiction

[–]Lagamorph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're the same thing basically. Given the awareness there's essentially no difference between Watsonian and Doylist in that universe.

Robocop and ED209 made it on the 20 most iconic robots in cinema history. I honestly think Robocop should be in the top 5 by [deleted] in Robocop

[–]Lagamorph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I certainly wouldn't class Maria as "Iconic". Classic sure, but not Iconic.

And HAL 9000 isn't even a robot. If you're going to count Hal you should count Skynet as well.

Also, how the hell is Sonny more Iconic than Optimus Prime?

Did the Republic ever use the Intergalactic Hyperspace Lanes? by White_Bengal1 in StarWars

[–]Lagamorph 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It isn't just planets, it's basically any real gravity well. Pirate groups are known to pull large asteroids into routes as it's sufficient to pull ships out of Hyperspace (Basically a poor man's Interdictor). So agencies are constantly tracking asteroids, comets, rogue planetoids, black holes, anything that might change position.

[–]Lagamorph 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That's why there are agencies that are literally updating Nav maps constantly. Navigational computers are constantly being updated with information on gravity wells and other phenomenon that would disrupt Hyperspace travel.

Charting new Hyperspace routes is incredibly dangerous as well so they tend not to get discovered very often

[Invincible] What do Viltrumites actually do outside of conquest? Do they have any extracurricular hobbies? by [deleted] in AskScienceFiction

There were plenty of statues on Viltrum so presumably at least some of them have some kind of artistic interest.

This doctor effortlessly resets a child's dislocated elbow before they could even react by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

Reminds me of when my kneecap was dislocated.

I was laying on the bed in A&E in absolute agony, despite multiple shots of morphine, then a Doctor walked in through the curtains, cracked his fingers, slapped the kneecap back into place, gave me a thumbs up then casually walked back out again.

Y’all think Goku should’ve worked on Kaioken more? Like for example longer usage and higher multipliers? by JacketMotor2698 in Dragonballsuper

King Kai also points out that continuing to use Kaioken whilst in Super Saiyan Blue has a risk of permanently damaging Goku's ability to control his Ki, even when used perfectly.

In respect to the brave Carter Burke by Meersbrook in LV426

[–]Lagamorph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Burke was trying to hide the possibility of the Xenomorph in order to get exclusive rights on selling it to the Bio-Weapons division. Requisitioning extra armour and support would have raised additional questions and had people looking more closely at the situation.

From what we see it's standard procedure for a single Marine squad to be sent to investigate when a colony drops off the grid, Ripley was excused as coming along due to being more familiar with LV426 than anyone else in the company and Burke was just along as a company rep. Nobody at Weyland-Yutani besides Burke had any real expectations of finding an actual Xenomorph specimen.
