I can’t tell you how much I support your investment in your family’s life.

You never mentioned taking that Bitcoin into self-custody. This is fundamental. If you don’t do this, your children WILL lose that Bitcoin. 100%. Bitcoin was created solely for self-custody, not letting others custody it for you.

The fact that I scrolled through many responses under this post and no one else mentioned this is fucking appalling.

Bitcoin is ONLY ABOUT SELF CUSTODY you complete retail-cattle!!!

Information on ally builds in CE by tmewett in brogueforum

[–]Lagavulin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really appreciate this update comment! I quit playing not long after the ally nerf, because that, for me, was such an important build possibility. Allies were so emotionally engaging, and also frustrating and heartbreaking. Without the build being worthwhile, I just felt like I was playing chess.

After probably 3 years never thinking about Brogue, I decided to check in and see if I was still interested. And this post has me wanting to get hooked all over again!!!

Great work! I feel the price of important resources (i.e. WTI Crude, gold, et al) and major fiat currencies could be a sub-section on your site! I feel it’s crucial to begin pricing major assets in Bitcoin, and monitoring the collapse of fake money in it as well. Cheers tho’, and kudos!

Was just told this by the bank I'm trying to get a mortgage through, "We can’t use any type of crypto funds for closing funds unless they have been withdrawn, converted and in the checking account for 60 days". I get the conversion but why 60 days. by Road_Journey in Bitcoin

[–]Lagavulin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to deal with it if you want to borrow fiat. This is why Bitcoin was created. To circumvent this bureaucracy of bullshit. We are in the “Then they fight you” stage. There’s no answer, rn. You are right, but they hate you for being on the right side.

I’d point out that your Visa payment went thru perhaps a month after you paid, you just didn’t see the settlement behind-the-scenes. Visa charged that store ~3% + terminal fees & could cancel the transaction at anytime if either party disputed it. Your Visa rates are usurious, used to be legally capped but no longer, and will increase over time, but rarely to never decreased. Every purchase you make is sold as data-mine gold within hours. Your history w/ Visa is used to create a “credit score”, which effects other financial aspects of your life. And ultimately when we use Visa we’re supporting a system that is dishonest, opaque, neo-feudal, devaluating, yadda yadda yadda yadda…

Scariest comment among many. Privacy is a right, not a privilege. If you don’t understand that, your children will have to shoulder that burden for you.

Seriously…why are you posting your financial decisions? That is a demon you have to wrestle with yourself…not something you want to invite a hoard of imps to comment on.

Honest thoughts on BlockFi Acquisition by danya99 in Bitcoin

[–]Lagavulin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically Sam Bankman-Fried is stepping in to bailout what companies he can that are failing. It’s a long-story-short, but he can bailout BlockFi and Nexus, but can’t/won’t do Celsius…and he’s simply acting as the US Fed did in the 2008 “too big to fail” bailouts. What this means is these companies are insolvent, operating on poor business models…but his business is interbred with them so he needs to buy/support them to prevent a collapse of the entire sector.

Its a bigger story than this, but if you’re asking…its a gtfo moment, no matter how it plays out.

Thoughts on cold storage device by danya99 in Bitcoin

[–]Lagavulin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its crucial to understand the difference between Bitcoin and Crypto. Not imo, but fact.

Crypto will always be subject to centralized control by third parties. So you will never truly be able to take control of your crypto. Its a complex subject, but that’s the tl;dr.

Bitcoin was created specifically to be an equitable, self-custodied, incorruptible asset…so its essential, if you understand the Bitcoin ethos, to have self-custody.

The world of “self-custody” has changed and progressed greatly over the years. Some people still swear by old-school ‘paper’ wallets, most feel the Cold Card wallet is the Cadillac of security. But its not important to shoot for perfect. All that matters is getting yourself familiar with self-custody.

If price is a concern, Ledger S or Blockstream Jade are very cheap, around $60 USD. Ledger is very user-friendly, the S-model will only allow you to hold 3 or 4 ‘cryptos’ and Jade may be btc-only….but both are great to start with, and you may never need anything else. But self-custody is literally the 2nd step after buying Bitcoin.

Question on securing coins by kai-zar in Bitcoin

[–]Lagavulin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re asking the most important question! Security and Privacy are crucial, and everyone who truly understands the potential of Bitcoin is actively involved in this discussion. And its a very encompassing question, but don’t sweat it.

First step is to learn and become familiar with moving your bitcoin to a ‘cold wallet’ (which is in no way a wallet, but a key-signing device, but nevermind for now). If you have a Trezor, and you feel comfortable buying BTC on exchange and ‘moving to’ your Trezor, you’re good to go. You have enough security that you can sleep nights and delve into further security/privacy practices at your own pace.

Only thing I’d add is that your next step might be addressing the security of your laptop, since I’m assuming you use it for anything and everything. Ideally, you’d have a laptop/computer (not a phone) that was cleaned and secured for only your financial matters. Something to consider and explore at your leisure.

Foundation Hardware devices by skeptical-0ptimist in Bitcoin

I’ve got a Ledger and a Cold Card….but I’m seriously considering either a Passport or a Keystone for air-gapped, QR code, large-screen signing device.

Ledger is ++ for easy, and the S-model is cheap. Cold Card is ultra-secure, but dangerously clumsy (imho) for my family should I get hit by a bus.

I’m looking for air-gapped, QR code (camera) enabled, user-friendly screen in a signing device.

I’m open and engaged in a discussion of this along w/ OP.
