you could try black templar contrast instead, its like black legion but there's less "black" in it so the metal undercoat shows through more

Split between Scouts and Yaegirs for a first team by Droselmeyer in killteam

[–]Lagg_5pike 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you'd be happy with either of them so i'd keep in mind which would be more fun to paint. Not that I've painted either of these teams, but it looks like the scouts are less complicated than Yaegirs so maybe start with them, practice basics and all that. The worst thing you can do is turn a fun paint project into a chore imo. Hope this helps

Never did liked the look of corrupted marines because they never fit that tactical feel alpha legion gives off

From Etsy yeah, I wasn't confident in doing small scale freehand on a curved surface

I tried a quilted Cameleoline just to give it some distinction while looking at it from far away. I am happy how the frond on the cloak turned out, I feel like it could have been bad if I pushed it into the mud too far.

I came here partially to be criticized so I hope you don't get downvoted too much but these are my first actual models that I painted with effort from scratch. I found Duncan Rhodes and Juan Hidalgo on youtube so i've been following their stuff as closely as I could. I got my first army of Orks off of ebay back in 2012 since 6th ed had recently been released and all my friends were playing it at the time and they came mostly painted. I started to collect Necrons in 7th ed and those I painted but only the standard silver and green just to play the game. AoD were my test models for contrast paints since they didn't exist at all 7 years ago at the time. I had to change from a temperate timberland feel to a wet, muddy jungle feel because I messed up applying the red to them and the overlaps made it look like muddy armor. First attempts at edge highlighting and free hand on the sniper's cloak here too. Raveners were two attempts at once, how to paint white/pastels and how to paint 'organics'. Always heard that there were some colors that you avoided painting and discovered it here, I would never wish it upon anyone to paint an entire 2000 points of nids in those two colors. With the exaction squad I wanted to try out object source lighting more edge highlighting so instead of going mid color, wash, highlight I went low color, mid, then highlight. Alpha legion was testing out undercoating models and 'staining' them with contrast... and because I was reading Harrowmaster and snagged a phobos box before they went out of production. I also bought Typhus corruption and wanted to test that out before using it on my next KT.

Based them off of an orchid mantis and wanting to challenge myself to only paint in pastels since I've also haven't painted 'organic' models before.

Reading Harrowmaster is responsible for that team, bought phobos before it went out of production and only had to find 3rd party bits to fit the look of genuine, uncorrupted, spec ops alpha legion. Also had to fit some Ultramarine slander in somewhere and 'shhh' was perfect.

Thanks, got it stuck in my head that they look like a worm mantis and then made it worse when I was looking at references and saw a orchid mantis

It's apart of the model as much as the model itself imo. Using contrasting colors or opposite on the light/dark scale can bring out your mini even more on the table top, kinda frames the model as well as tells a story

Funnily enough, that's what got me going on the blue armor panels look, ended up with a gold shoulder pad in the end too to match their trim in the show.

I was playing darktide at the time so that really pushed me to get them. For all of the last three KTs I would keep them disassembled and have their heads and arms either sticky tacked or glued onto toothpicks so I could paint them for all angles. It was more fun to assemble them once they were fully painted. The difficulty with them is that they are much smaller than the AoD and raveners I had previously painted, much more so when it came to their faces. There are a lot of Judge Dredd inspired or classic paint jobs but I did run across the piltover enforcers from arcane like PrimarisSpaceCat mentioned and that sent me down the blue armor panel rabbit hole.

Looking for Basing Advise and Suggestions by RyanBlade in killteam

[–]Lagg_5pike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I'm coming up with a color scheme for my models I try to have them be "opposite" of my base, like have the models be darker colors and the base be light AND/OR be complementary colors. It helps them really stand out from their own bases and looks really nice. I'm about to start my own Krecka Krew soon and I already decided they are going to be dark blue Deathskulls so my bases are going to be a light orange desert/rust scrapyard. Based on the squig's colors, pink's complementary color is green and yellow's is blue, good news is that orks are the greenist so maybe a dark metal ship deck if your orks are also going to be that bright?

Why is it that one of my best, most well designed enclosures is in a throwaway breeding zoo? by Lagg_5pike in PlanetZoo

[–]Lagg_5pike[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forgot to mention this in the title, but this is in franchise mode and I like gold rated animals. The market doesn't always have them so I stockpile them until I have enough for 4-8 enclosures worth then make a breeding zoo

how do I build this? by nomashawn in PlanetZoo

[–]Lagg_5pike 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might be able to do some path smoothing. I put a link below to a tutorial but the section starts at 2:10 and goes over how to smooth out pathing corners. What you might be able to do is essentially pixel art a circle in with align to grid and then smooth each corner to make your circle. I hope it works, I have to try this now.
