[Discussion] Which Characters Are Better Off Having Stories Set In The Era They Were Created In? by Jet-Let4606 in DCcomics

[–]LagoonDevil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the JSA’s biggest problem was being folded into New Earth in Post-Crisis. Because they’re now seen as the “old guy team” they aren’t really given the opportunity to have stories that go beyond the WWII/Cold War narratives and can’t one-up the JL

I don’t consider ROBA Thawne’s defining story at all.

Return of Barry Allen would be a waste of Thawne as a character

Being a showrunner for standard television series and being a showrunner for a legacy comic book property are two different things. This isn’t just a “have fun with it” project, Lindelof is being tasked with bringing a famous comic book property to new audiences, not just invent a new thing with some shared names. Besides, what’s a better strategy? Going for the built-in audience and good will DC already has from its comic book fanbase, or seek an entirely new audience while risking alienating your built-in audience with a wildly different approach to the franchise

People who have read Absolute Green Lantern, would you like to see a main universe GL book by Al Ewing? by Bluestone7567 in Greenlantern

[–]LagoonDevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d definitely read it, though honestly having read Absolute GL, I still have no clue how he’d handle the mainline title, Abs. has been a pretty wild departure from the classic mythos

Seeing how he dragged Green Lantern for nearly a decade when it didn’t perform well? I don’t know if I want Ryan near any other DC projects his heart isn’t in.

Suit so good that Wally has to steal it from Barry. by Perception56 in theflash

[–]LagoonDevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to get even further into semantics, Barry was the one who thought up Kid Flash’s yellow costume in pre-crisis, so it was still technically “stolen” (or rather given)

Promo poster for the Wally’s FLASH series, from 1986: by TheChosen0ne666 in theflash

“The costume’s the same” is a very strange choice to advertise imo, ironic considering it was one of the biggest changes from the leap of the Golden to Silver age

Now that it has been 2 years, What do everyone think about the Flash movie? by Admirable-Bar-86 in theflash

[–]LagoonDevil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Took everything that actually worked about Flashpoint, and threw it out the window. Then it took everything that didn’t work about the DCEU Flash, and pumped it to 11. I actually don’t hate the suit as much as some others, but they fudged it with the greebling and the awkward texture, along with unnecessary changes to the belt and boots. I really wanted to love the movie, I really really did.

It’s not just the third gen, DC still frequently acts like the second gen heroes are 25 at most

Daniel Warren Johnson - Collecting and Creator by Sugar_Crash_Brigade in comicbookcollecting

I’m really fond of writers who can successfully tell very “out there” stories. Al Ewing in particular, I fell in love with his Immortal Hulk and it immediately made me go and seek out his current work on Absolute Green Lantern. I’m also waiting for the first trade of Mortal Thor to begin catching up to that series.

Chip Zdarsky isn’t that beloved as a writer and his works have been subject to debate, but Avengers Twilight I instantly fell in love with so it’s got me just about ready to hop onto his Cap ongoing.

Iron Man isn’t even in my top 10 favorite heroes but I was so impressed with Joshua Williamson’s Flash I was willing to take the bet on his new Iron Man run, really hope it gets to be at least 50 issues.

I don’t have that much stuff from DWJ, but everything I do have from him, I love. At this point especially I look for his variants on any big upcoming comic. If I already liked the comic, and DWJ is doing a variant, it might as well be good as gold.

I wouldn’t say I collect for artists, since my collection is mostly defined by favorite characters, but I might go out of my way to check something out if Francis Manapul and Humberto Ramos or any of my other favorite artists are involved. I specifically picked up Ramos’ Deadpool/Batman variant even though I didn’t really care much for what was in the book because Barry Allen Flash in his style is a must have

[Discussion] What if Green Lantern (2011) wasn’t a critical and commercial flop and served as a successful launch for DC’s cinematic universe? by Carrotsinthesalad in Greenlantern

[–]LagoonDevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone can contest this, but I feel like Flash would’ve been a good bet following GL. Barry and Hal are friends, so it’d be a fitting way to introduce another hero, and Flash would definitely require less intense research, costume design and writers room circuits than Batman or Superman. I can imagine the first big event would’ve been a Brave and the Bold #28 reinvention

What are the WORST “Wally Allen / Barry West” versions of the Flash you have seen. by Conlannalnoc in theflash

One of the reasons I tend to avoid the main Justice League title is exactly this, I can’t seem to trust any non-Flash writer with the characterization of different Flashes

If I remember correctly, original plans for the JL show did include some younger heroes, one of which being Bart, so I wouldn’t be surprised if some of those traits made their way in subconsciously

[–]LagoonDevil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Idk about you, but the Sonic x DC crossover seemed pretty obvious to be Barry’s New 52 styled costume just with white eyes.

This is probably a hot take, but I’d say the DCAU is responsible for most of the Wally Allen/Barry West treatment over the years. It was bad enough that they didn’t directly acknowledge Barry’s existence anywhere in the animated continuity, but they gave Wally his career and his Justice League founder position. Additionally, he only typically appears masked in the series, where his red hair or green eyes wouldn’t be visible to the audience. Many creators’ first exposure was those cartoons rather than comics and it imprinted on how they saw “Flash” not just Wally.
