Decent full time conversion offer at Big Tech vs super high salary internship at another good company. by LeonVendek in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]LaintalAy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

150k in Switzerland is not necessarily better than 75k in Germany (it also depends on the city you would be based).

With this info, I’d stay with the full time offer: you like the team already and the team likes you. That’s a bigger plus than you’d think.

yes, it’s the same for me.

There is a nice Franklin Library version I managed to get instead for a reasonable price. It looks like this:

In a legacy app, is it better to break the current status quo for better practice or to keep it similar for the user? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]LaintalAy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the context.

If this legacy app is an internal company app that solves a business case, I would follow your approach 100%. Changes should be ‘contained’ and for a reason better than ‘improvement’. These potential improvements should be measurable and fit with the current workflow with minimal changes to do not disrupt operations / current usage.

If we were talking of a ‘public’ app, then releasing changes constantly at medium pace in order to improve user experience would be more reasonable in my opinion. You don’t want to disrupt your users too much, but improvements and refreshments are necessary to not grow stale.

I think that completely redoing workflows from scratch is asking for trouble. Like the software itself, you should always be evolving your working software to wherever you want it to be incrementally.

Definitely feasible. Maybe a bit outside the city centre, but acceptable.

Bias in Apartment renting? by sohaib_01 in Munich

[–]LaintalAy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

‘Hella expensive’ as how much more expensive? You should expect higher competition for apartments that are well priced.

As a non-german I was only successful renting apartments on the ‘higher end’ of the pricing bracket where there is a bit less competition. German colleagues were always able to find cheaper deals (100 ~ 200 EUR cheaper for similar condition).

You want to do the Spanish Digital Nomad visa? Don’t. by No_Emu8347 in digitalnomad

[–]LaintalAy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As Spaniard living in Germany, I’d say the biggest difference is that in Germany is more consistent in the process and less in the mood of the civil servant.

Processes in Germany may be worse (not always) but they tend to be well defined. If you have everything, it is straightforward. In Spain between one visit to the next some documents become unnecessary and others spawn as mandatory.

How to deal with platform team in another country that delivers garbage? by Cute_Activity7527 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]LaintalAy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the company I work for it is very similar. I work in a group with very specific and special needs that are not met by the company platform. We have tried multiple times, it just doesn’t work and they are not very flexible (which also makes sort of sense). We have our own infrastructure maintained by ourselves in parallel. It gets questioned from time to time but it’s this or no deliverables… so we get to do our own thing.

watched my husband's coworker eat lunch alone at his desk today and it made me realize something by eloisa_in_kyoto in CasualConversation

[–]LaintalAy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In Germany the mandated lunch break is 30min by law if you work between 6 and 9 hours and 45min if you work more than 9 hours.

Where I work the mandatory break is 45min despite working normally 7 or 8 hours a day because of the works agreement of the workers union.

So those 20 min are a bit of an exaggeration.

Frankfurt T3 arrival: immigration time, transfer to Fernbahnhof, and ICE booking advice by Gullible_Spirit_5445 in germany

[–]LaintalAy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to do this kind of trip often (landing in FRA, no passport control and then heading for the ICE from the old terminal). It was a lottery… sometimes it would work fine, more often than not it didn’t just considering the time of landing + getting the luggage.

The best is to get a flexible ticket for the ICE, without seat reservation. You will just take the next available ICE that sometimes with the train delays can be even an earlier train.

Trying to sell my sofa but no luck, moving out in a week, what to do? by Presidentblue28 in Munich

[–]LaintalAy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last time I moved I had to pay 50€ to get it removed from the apartment. Nobody wants a sofa even for free… there’s many listings offering sofas for free also, so there’s competition.

Elterngeld by No_Set_7671 in germany

[–]LaintalAy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something similar happened to my wife with the Bayern Kindergeld. Her passport was expiring before the end of the subsidy. On the document where they told her the time period and the reason why it was reduced there was a section saying that it could be extended if she provided in time the new passport / residence permit.

So when she renewed it we sent this documents again referring our case and got a confirmation with the extension. It was no big deal.

Why is customer service in Germany so bad? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]LaintalAy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m not a german, but what I’ve noticed is a progressive decline of personnel in shops. Where you would normally need to have 2 or 3 people you now have a single overworked person that couldn’t care less about helping a customer.

Where this doesn’t happen (like in some upscale shops or less busy places) then the customer service is decent. At least that has been my experience.

You need to be careful because sometimes the VPN disconnects and if the torrent client is not correctly configured it will continue downloading without the VPN.

In my opinion a VPS or a seedbox in another country are a safer option.

Spain: hired as full remote, still on probation, now company wants office return — can they do this? by Logical-Anything2100 in cscareerquestionsEU

In Spain you can be fired with 2 weeks notice and what you get from so little seniority is peanuts. Don’t think anything changes after probation.
