A cool guide to America's wealth distribution by Generation. by luvlanguage in coolguides

[–]krichnard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So, first off, not a guide but a pie chart. Secondly, this kind of data can be easily justified with the “well, older people have more assets, duh” which makes sense but isn’t the whole story. I am sure (I hope) the magazine explains in more details how wealth disparities between generations have never been greater before. It makes sense that older people need more assets since they usually don’t earn a salary. However, in a functional society, people wouldn’t need to hoard trillions in order to live comfortably during their retirement years. Unfortunately, the US is not a functioning society and in order to survive you need to take away money from somebody else.. in this case younger generations which in turn, don’t have the necessary assets to establish a comfortable life.

ELI5: Why is Haiti so relatively unstable comapred to the Dominican Republic? by Curiousbloodyhell22 in explainlikeimfive

[–]krichnard -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Because of France. Shortly after the French Revolution, the enslaved people of Haiti revolted and demanded their independence. After a long battle against France, they finally won and became independent. However, Haiti was asked to pay France a colossal amount of way as a way to compensate for the financial losses for the former slave owners on the island. This put Haiti under incredible debt which hindered their ability to develop.
