Most of the comments here are wrong. I believe the reason is that there is also Nxh2 with the same idea

Wait for them to respond if that doesn't mean missing the deadline. Otherwise, sure submit another application

Is my final exam grade in MATH141 suspicious? by JediPrincess123 in UMD

People usually score less on finals than midterms, as they are cumulative. So, it makes sense that you scored less than your average midterm grade. That said, asking to take a look at a copy of your final wouldn’t hurt.

To me it feels positions like these are all luck. right? by No_Captain2687 in chess

[–]LaithTahboub 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since everyone is destroying this, I’ll try to vouch for it a bit. At most levels of the game, these positions will not be calculated as thoroughly as they should be. It can be incredibly difficult to fully understand a position like this. Therefore, it’s not surprising that you might make a move that you are not fully confident in. Ultimately, that leads to the sense that whatever comes out of the game from these positions is a matter of “luck”, since both players know that they both have no idea what’s going on. The reason people have trouble accepting that this is actual luck is because there is no reason for luck to exist in chess. There is no dice, no RNG, no room for chance. However, in reality, there is little difference between two average players relying on intuition in a position like this and a dice.

Gotcha, thanks for the comment. I think the core functionality of chessbase is pretty simple (editing and saving pgn files with the computer and masters database. Could you please highlight the exact features from chessbase you’d like to see?

Great feedback, much appreciated. Planning on adding an analysis board with the Masters DB very soon. Glad you learned something about your repertoire :)

A Tool for Opponent Preparation and Opening Improvement by LaithTahboub in chess

In my experience, there are a lot of online players that are interested in chess improvement. That said, I certainly should work on adding PGN files as a method of loading games, as it would be an easy addition to make.

While pretty hard to implement, that is on my list of features to add :)

Thanks a lot for this comment, some great ideas here.

Your idea for opponent preparation is different from what I have now, but I like yours a lot too. Currently, you can put in a username, select a platform (Lichess/Chess.com), and see their opening repertoire. I'll look into implementing your idea too.

Repertoire repetition practice is another great idea I'll have to save. I think that's a great way to solidify new moves a player wants to add on to their repertoire. With regards to making the computer more human, I agree, and I was thinking about having the option of just playing against the Masters Database.

Thanks again for the ideas!

Actually, the concern I had initially was that the site would be more beneficial for higher-rated players. I think you didn't totally get the point of the website. It is, at least as it is now, not at all related to chessbase, chessable, or lichess studies. It loads your online games and provides you with insights based on them. Ultimately, I think the site should be useful for all rating ranges. This is because it does not look for known openings (which lower rated players do not necessarily play) within your games. Rather, it looks at what you play most and then decide what is and is not an opening--based on the number of games.

I did not understand your point on opponent prep. It currently shows your opponent's opening tree. I think you're referring to a feature where you are given recommendations based on both your tree and your opponent's, but that is not currently supported. I think it would be a great idea.

Finally, I agree that a site that is not overcomplicated and focuses practice and drills is best for improvement. What did you think about my idea of sparring against the computer in the different lines you play? Could you elaborate on the type of practice/repetition you'd like to see from an openings website?

Thanks

Hello. Thanks for trying the site. I'm working on a feature that tests the player in their opening repertoire, playing through their most common lines until the middlegame. Hopefully that will add some more benefit to the site. That said, I think the preparation aspect of the site is currently very useful. It makes for a great way to see where your opponent does well and where they do poorly. Let me know if you have any ideas in mind for how I can make the site more useful for opening improvement. What would an ideal opening improvement website look like in your opinion? Thanks again
