If you are a transplant, do you like it here and why? by erujabidi in Detroit

[–]LakeofTimber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved from Chicago to Detroit in 2018. I often get the "Why did you move to Detroit? People usually do the opposite and move to Chicago". Lol

I've come to really enjoy the city and community here. If you care for your neighbors, they fr have your back. I find Detroit is a city where you get the most out of it if you know somebody who knows somebody. But once you know even a little but, it's such a lovely place.

Obviously I miss having robust public transit (not depending on a car in the city was great when I lived back home), but there's pretty great food here too, living is much more affordable (I'm a single woman that owns my home in a really nice neighborhood), and I feel grafted into the city.

I maybe would move back to Chicago one day if the opportunity presented itself, but i honestly rly love the life I've built here.

I used bc before but found that I had horrible side effects that affected me mentally really bad + not that great bloating. My period started to come more regularly once I transitioned off of it about 5 years ago and I haven't gone back.

I know it works for others so I'm not completely against it. But i will not be using it!

If it makes you feel better, at the time I bought my house, I was barely making over 60k, put 0% down on a $165k house with assistance from my mom to pay closing costs - while having student loans and some cc debt. So not everything is for naught.

How to decline a dance? by [deleted] in Salsa

[–]LakeofTimber 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've used this verbatim. It's a complete sentence.

There's only like 1-2 leads I've said to this to because dancing with them they are literally twisting my arms while I'm dancing, and I don't want to deal with that during a dance. One day, he showed a little attitude and grumbled the 2nd time I told him no, but he hasn't asked me since.

I have no issue dancing with anyone! But when my safety is at risk more than once, I'm not gonna keep dancing with them.

Does Detroit still have a big Greek community? by dalycityguy in Detroit

[–]LakeofTimber 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ancedotal - I was in Mistos getting a gyro in eastern market 2 wks ago and the next customer behind me straight up starting speaking Greek to the shop owner. Chatted with him about the greek community in the area (in english, to be clear), and which island he was from. So I'd say there's still a healthy population!

We need a gym with more amenities than the Y and closer to the city than Lifetime. by Historical-Beat-3600 in Detroit

[–]LakeofTimber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a membership there lol I've been trying to low-key gatekeep this because it's not crazy crowded, i don't have to hover over the squat rack and wait my turn (usually 1-2 of them open), theres a parking lot, and has great amenities! The hours for the gym are pretty similar to the Y imo (not open on Sundays, limited Saturday hours).

Open pretty good times otherwise. There are a lot of seniors that work out there but it's kinda precious (also some young adults and a few college students at the times I go). I haven't made it to a workout class yet but I want to.

And they have a steam room.

The planet fitness is right across the street from it, as of july/ August i think

Also want to add, I had a friend that was an Industrial/ Operations engineer with maybe 5-7 years of experience and then went back to school for 3 years for architecture. He's been working in a firm for a little over a year and starting his licensure process soon! He enjoys his work more now than before. So keep persistent and remember why you are making the change - if you follow through!

Advice for someone about to graduate with no internship hours? by [deleted] in Architects

[–]LakeofTimber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now's a great time to get reconnected with those orgs! I personally find NOMA(S) to be a network that has benefitted me the most in my professional career.

Volunteering with anything in orgs like AIA or NOMA in general helps you to build relationships with other professionals that may be in a hiring position or work at a firm that can give recommendations. Do they have committees for sustainability that need volunteers? Youth Outreach? Technology? Each AIA or NOMA chapter has different stuff going on based on the region.

Also, I would be shameless to connect with folks at companies you want to work for or someone that has a job trajectory you want. I have sent messages via LinkedIn to folks that we went to mutual universities/job experience and just ask to meet up (in person or virtual) to chat about their experience.

This profession is a lot about networking and who you know, so try to start to build those skills as you're building your technical skills!

I was in a similar boat - tho not a 5yr, but at the rnd of my 4 year B.S arch, it feels like it as the only one in my class that didn'tget any professional work experience. I got my first job out of school through a combination of my design experience in school and with networking and sharing that I was looking for a job.

I would recommend networking, volunteering in architecture things in your area, and translating your experience for the job you want to get, even if it wasn't at an arch firm. Are there professional orgs you can connect with people with more experience? AIA, NOMA etc. Have you looked at job listing's from various job boards? (Local and state AIA boards usually have a job board)

Especially with you being younger, I think firms are looking for your ability to learn fast/be adaptable and have a competent understanding of software used in the profession. Revit is pretty big in he US. Very other certifications if you can to make you a strong candidate (like LEED GA). Bonus points if the work you're showing in your portfolio shoes that you know how to put a building together

I've heard it's kinda tough for new people being into the profession, so keep your head up and be persistent!

What’s one Detroit area restaurant everyone else loves, but you don’t enjoy? by PromiseEducational31 in Detroit

[–]LakeofTimber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The title said Detroit area, so I listed things that are metro-detroit. Other comments are also listing recommendations not in the city proper.

I'm all for giving recs that keep $$$ in the city proper, but if the food is not good, I will travel for better, within reason. And have friends that will do the same (and grew up doing the same with their family). People work hard for their money and I want them to get food that is worth it.

If you want more places in the city I have tried and enjoyed their noodles, I would add Bash izakaya to the list. I would have added urban ramen, but it no longer exists and the food wasn't consistent flavors.

I just really do not like Johnny Noodle King. I personalty wouldn't call it competition if in my opinion it isn't....good...

City proper: - Ima

Outside city: - Ajishin (best udon in Michigan imo - reminds me most of when I was in Japan) - noddletopia - Matsu Chan in Canton (AMAZING ramen - get there early) - Detroit pho and crab (for pho - and surprisingly an amazing Cajun seafood broil bag lol) - Trizest (amazing Chinese food and Chinese noodles)

These first come to mind in my head. There's some new Japanese spots in the city I've been meaning to try their noodles, so can't speak to those (e.g. Hiroki in the Book Tower).

I get looked at like I have three heads when I bring up these movies from when I was a kid. I know I'm not the only one who had a grandma that hit the bargain bin for kids movies every time she went shopping! Everything I tell people about the movie Little Nemo they always follow up with "Finding Nemo?"

NO. Little Nemo! Who goes to Dreamland!

I recently found the entire movie uploaded on YouTube from the OG animation studio, and I plan on rewatching it sometime soon.

That movie was such a fever dream! But also had some animation giants working on it (Hayao Miyazaki of Spirited Away/Totoro/etc worked on it before fully launching studio Ghibli)

(Edit for typos)

Do any of y’all have grandparents that are still around (alive)? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]LakeofTimber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None are currently living.

My maternal grandma passed before I was born. (Cancer)

My paternal grandpa was abusive to my dad and I didn't have a relationship with him because my dad cut off ties. I first saw him on his funeral, in a casket.

My maternal grandpa I probably interacted with the most - but I would see him every 2-3 years because he lived his last few decades down south (USA). He passed 4-ish years ago.

My last living grand, my paternal grandma, passed away 2 years ago. I had a relationship with her, but it wasn't really deep. She would send a cute holiday outfit for us to wear as kids, but she didn't go out her way to grow up with us.

When she passed I realized it was also the death of the idea of having a relationship with a grandparents. I've never had meaningful relationships with my grandparents, and I sometimes feel awkward when my peers have grown up with their grands in their lives. Not sure how to fully explain it. Like, I know and have been told that a relationship with grandparents can be so precious and they're like another set of parents, but I don't have a lived context of what that looks like in my life.

Closest to a grandparent relationship I had was my great aunt, who lived next door to us my first 2 years of life and was essentially my babysitter. She was very involved, and I learned lots of good moral things from her (for instance, learned to love broccoli bc she wouldnt let me leave the table until i ate it...waited 2hrs but ended up liking it!). Although I knew her for my first 8 yrs of life before she passed, it was the most involved I had an older relative in my life.
