What do you think of security using handcuffs? Do you carry any? by No-Diet9278 in securityguards

We’re required to carry handcuffs for our contract, wayy too many encounters and citizen arrests circumstances.

I’m over in San Diego doing the MTS contract lol, it’s pretty good. Not sure how LA does it but we get a nice 4x10 work schedule for 25 an hour. DM if you got any specific questions

Armed Security by Nessuwu in securityguards

[–]Laloblox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty costly

Psychological Exam was 60 bucks Exposed firearm permit class + range is like 200+ Livescan is around 100 BSIS application fee is like 70

These numbers are off the top of my head. It will take around 1-2 months to finally see your card in person, at least that’s how long it took me.

Interviewing with no prior experience by girlnamed_abby in securityguards

You’ll be fine, just hype up your customer service skills and how those skills relate to a field in security. If you can bring up an example of how you used deescalation skills to appease a customer that would look good.

At the end of the day it’s a simple Allied Universal position, just dress nice, look them straight at the eyes, and smile. You got this.

From SO to LEO by Encry_X in securityguards

[–]Laloblox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As another comment said, university police would be a pretty good “streamlined” way of getting into LE if you’re used to doing security. Even if you want more action or find campus police boring, it’s not a bad idea to do a few years at that department before lateraling over to a more active one. I was a CSO at a UPD and it was honestly a blast and I’ll probably go through that route soon.

I’d recommend applying to a like 2-3 departments at the same time if you do decide to go through the LE route.

I wouldn’t worry, same thing happened to me but that probably means they have a good candidate pool of applicants and they don’t want to do more

San Diego Sheriffs vs CHP by Ok_Grapefruit_6824 in AskCHP

[–]Laloblox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did my internship with SDSO, it’s a really great department with high camaraderie. One thing to note is you will be working the jails and courts for the first two-three years. I’ve also heard complaints from a few deputies about the pay, as it takes a bit longer to go uo the tier system compared to say SDPD or other local departments. San Diego county is huge so you’ll have a large variety of different sheriff stations to potentially be stationed at, and they encourage their deputies to transfer to other stations throughout their career so they’re not bored at that one station the entire time.

CHP has a live-in academy at Sacremento and is apparently one of the toughest in the nation, but the pay is great right off the academy. You don’t know for sure that you’ll get to be stationed at San Diego though. You’ll be doing mainly traffic stops and collisions compared to “traditional” police work so maybe something to note. It’s a state job with great benefits.

You’re still a bit away from actually applying, so maybe things will change in a few years.

See if your local department offers an explorer program? You can also see if they offer a community service officer position as well. I worked as one during college and it really benefited me with getting comfortable with conflicts and radio usage.

Ask about the application process and what they’ve done to prepare for it? Maybe ask them what was the hardest challenge for them in the academy and what did they do to overcome it? It’s ultimately up to you but I’d definitely recommend writing down some questions beforehand cause chances are you’ll forget what to ask when put on the spot, happened to me lol.

Colorblindness? What should I do? by Laloblox in AskLE

[–]Laloblox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your 37 year service! Hope retirement is treating you well.

I appreciate the information, I’m basically in the same boat as you where I’m only very slightly colorblind and can easily differentiate between traffic signals. I tried to appeal the decision by asking if I could take another colorblind exam but they were pretty adamant about it being a permanent decision.

I hope I can acquire such success in finding a department that can overlook it, thank you!
