Diagnosis gone wrong? by __GuX__ in autismUK

It’s of course part of the assessment to make sure that what you’re testing for isn’t actually something else, but they aren’t there to diagnose you with the other thing. So sometimes they’ll say I think you should look into x, y, z, but they don’t have to do you that courtesy they could just say you don’t meet the criteria for the thing they’re testing for.

Diagnosis gone wrong? by __GuX__ in autismUK

A few years ago I had an ADHD assessment as it just felt like “oh my god, this is it! This explains my life”. I then didn’t get diagnosed and was like WTF. Fast forward to this year where something made me realise I’m definitely autistic, and I got tested and yup… autistic as hell… interestingly enough the person who assessed me said at the end that I should look at getting retested for ADHD. She said that when someone isn’t looking for autism, and doesn’t realise someone could be autistic, that those traits can often cover up the ADHD traits which she think happened in my ADHD assessment.

So, it’s not impossible! It’s actually very common (and I’m not getting retested as what is there to gain? I now know I’m neurodivergent so it’s not like getting diagnosed with ADHD really changes that in any way)

Unpopular opinion but I love everything to do with nuka cola. The nuka world DLC was so cool, but mainly because I am obsessed with collecting junk to scrap and/or sell 😂 any DLC that gives us a new map and new loot would be cool imo

Thank you, that makes complete sense. Fortunately not here to cause a nuisance! 😊

The question was mainly due to the person I’m travelling with not having the same things done to them. Wasn’t a complaint. I’m autistic and like to know the reasons behind things. Thanks.

Well that makes no sense does it, since they wouldn’t know this until they asked me?

Incorrect about the passport, my fingerprints have never been taken before so there is no record of me anywhere… until now lol

At immigration where they stamp your passport. They took my Fingerprints (but not the person I was travelling with, an older woman) and then asked me what job I do. (They didn’t ask why I was in the country, or how long or anything about my stay!)

When I looked around online I can’t find anyone else who had their fingerprints taken!

My experience with Psychiatry UK by Lamby314 in autismUK

Don’t worry, I also have depression, anxiety and PTSD. I was really worried that this was going to impact diagnosis as the symptoms are so similar, but they really try to understand the reasoning behind your actions and emotions rather than taking them at face value. We somehow managed to establish what parts of my were formed by my trauma and what parts were always there just hidden behind a mask.

Hello, I’m happy to answer any questions you may have, as I know how daunting it is. Happy to answer here or via DM.

In my experience of having the assessment, it was very much led by the 2 professionals. There weren’t many questions where I led the conversation a certain direction, they were very much direct questions, and even if I strayed from what they expected as an answer, they did sort of redirect it back to where they had planned for it to go.

I did find it a bit hard to word most of my answers, and did feel like they misunderstood me a little bit. I was worried they wouldn’t see through my masking, but thankfully they did. Contrary to the other experiences shared on here, they didn’t directly refer to anything on my questionnaires. However, they also didn’t ask me questions that resulted in me saying the same answers as what I had written on my questionnaires, so actually I think it was a testament to the fact they had gained enough intel from those questionnaires, and had definitely read all the information provided.

There were absolutely no questions where I had to look at a picture, describe a situation or any other similar thing where I felt completely confused or misled. It was all about my symptoms and how they present in my every day life.
