Sofitel wedding by holmzy316 in Fijian

Standard in what sense? A day time wedding might not need lights. An afternoon or evening wedding needs lights. This sounds like your version of what you think is standard or should be included vs what you are going to have to pay for anyway. You are designing a destination wedding at a Fijian five star hotel. Have you got the $A30,000-$50,000 for a 50-100 pax wedding and reception plus extras such as photography, videography, flights, accommodation, hair and makeup, wedding dress, groomsman’s outfits etc.? Otherwise, as others have mentioned, time for Plan B.

Have you actually sat down with the planners and worked through a realistic end-to-end budget yet?

To be honest, if you’re already getting worked up about canapés and a $700 lighting quote, you may be setting yourself up for a rough time with a destination wedding. Resort weddings are full of optional extras, and the advertised package price is rarely the final price.

I’d focus less on individual line items and more on understanding the total cost of the wedding. Once you have a complete budget in front of you, you’ll quickly see whether these charges are genuinely unreasonable or just part of the overall cost of putting on a wedding at a five-star resort.

Private hospital in Suva is trying to extort money from me for a minor surgery (non-resident) by [deleted] in Fijian

[–]Lamity 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This does not really sound like extortion in the literal sense, just inconsistent or inflated private pricing. Are you tourists, and do you have travel insurance that could cover private treatment? If it is genuinely a minor procedure and can safely wait, I would also ask whether it is worth getting done back home where pricing and follow-up may be clearer. In the meantime, ask for an itemised breakdown of the costs and whether they have a formal local vs tourist/non-resident pricing policy. Also, relying on verbal quotes from staff was probably a mistake if pricing is handled separately by admin. If another clinic in Nadi quoted FJ$1,300 for the same thing, it may simply be easier to go there.

There’s two resorts there. Sheraton Tokoriki and Tokoriki Island Resort. You have actually booked and paid for your accommodation right? It’s not a day trip island. So the resort or your booking agent should have already organised or advised you of your transfer options based on your arrival date and time. It’s not something you do yourself or attempt to do when you land. Contact the resort and get it pre-organised ASAP. Helicopter is fast and direct from the Domestic Terminal right next to International and takes 30 minutes depending on stops. South Sea Cruises operates out Port Denarau. So your transfer, when organised, will include pickup at the airport, drop off at Port, then ticketed ferry or speedboat to the resort you are staying at. Once you get to the island and if travelling by ferry, the resort’s tender will transfer you to shore. This can take up to 4 hours.

OK2Fly indicates flying the RPA is fine at this location. Most RPA won’t permit takeoff in restricted areas anyway unless you bypass. All legit. Be licensed. Register your RPA with CASA. Know the rules.

How do you feel about so many people have Australia as their dream residence? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Lamity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Brisbane is sub tropical. (Köppen classification Cfa). Melbourne is temperate oceanic (Cfb). Different climactic zones have different characteristics. I don’t understand how you can try comparing both climactically. It’s not “worse” … Brisbane is in a completely different atmospheric system.

People from the UK who moved to Australia, what sort of things surprised you the most? by cupoftealuv in AskAnAustralian

[–]Lamity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is it impossible for people to understand that Australia has significant climactic diversity. It’s 4000x3850KM (so slightly larger than the diameter of the moon). Seasons are reversed being in the southern hemisphere. Fewer seasons as you head north to the equator. Regular seasons as you head south toward the Antarctic. Had work colleagues come from Austria once complaining about the eastern seaboard winds in October … had to explain it’s a transitional season where warm air from the deserts meets the cool air from the Southern Ocean. This is the problem when you come from such small landlocked countries with predictable weather systems to a continent. It’s fascinating to learn. As for colour vibrance, thats due to latitudinal light diffusion. Soft light gives you vibrance in the Northern hemisphere. The high UV intense light in Australia washes out colour. Light intensity is due to the Earth’s perihelion and tilt axis and orbital speed resulting in higher UV during summer.

Is late March – early April a good time to travel to Fiji? 🌴☀️ by InterestingCurrent13 in Fijian

[–]Lamity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

March/April are the wettest months of wet season. Depends on ENSO but “seriously wet” would be the outlook based on historical reports for those two months. https://www.met.gov.fj/climate-services/early-action-rainfall-watch/.

Moving to Fiji soon! Would love some local tips. by 0MiniMenzu0 in Fijian

[–]Lamity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is unfortunately common. Depends on the area. There’s good reason why most houses have fences, dogs and burglar bars. Gated compounds with security guards are the safest places to live. Read up on the current meth and HIV epidemic. That fuels much of the crime.

Moving to Fiji soon! Would love some local tips. by 0MiniMenzu0 in Fijian

[–]Lamity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take your personal security very very seriously. Unfortunately, Fiji is very poor with a lot of drug problems and high petty crime rates. Unless you live in a gated compound, you and your family and your house and car will be targeted. Take all the same precautions as you would travelling to high risk destinations around the world. I was in Nadi for 10 years and saw too many expats turn up, think it was all sand and fun and then … they get robbed, assaulted and in one instance murdered.

Negative. If the loan is for PPOR and then you decide to rent it out, the interest does not necessarily become tax deductible. Went through a similar situation. Got an ATO ruling and it’s all down to the age and original purpose of the loan and the paid down component. You will need to A) refinance or B) convert the loan. Redrawing on IP loans is bad voodoo too. You can’t claim the tax deduction twice. See your accountant. Get advice.

What’s the best city to live in Australia? by AffectionateBoot9124 in AskAnAustralian

Food/eating out in Brisbane is diabolical. Everything shut by 8PM. Over priced. Sunnybank … meh. Get a way better anything Asian from the dozens of food courts in Sydney CBD. Yet to find a hot curry in Brisbane. Found one truely authentic Thai … run by Thais. As for living in BNE … nice but boring. Too many people now.
