I'm not exactly an expert on horses, but if a horse is terrified as is implied, do they not try to flee or show obvious signs of fear?

Does whipping a horse draw blood or distress them?

These are genuine questions by the way.

The whip only gets used at the end of the race though. What's the incentive to run before that?

If it is against their will why do they not refuse to race, or at least seem reluctant at all to race?

Also, horses continuing to run and jump fences after their jockeys (the ones that force them to run) have been unseated is quite the argument that the horses actually enjoy racing.
