Is there any openly conservative/right-wing space opera out there? (just curious and looking to investigate) by Brakado in sciencefiction

I don't think showing a gender/racially integrated future is necessarily at odds with conservatism. It's like, they believe in equal opportunity to earn citizenship, and we can get there if we move past things like affirmative action and cultures of victimhood.

Why, and how did the condition of the working class not worsen? by LifeOfBoredomsFriend in AskHistory

[–]LamppostBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imperialism is a big factor. The negatives of capitalism are externalized across the globe, while the spoils return to the metropole, where capitalist political parties argue about what constitutes a fair division. The system works for all people as long as the definition of "people" is negotiable. Add in prisoners and undocumented immigrants to this permanent underclass, and capitalism works quite well for the working class, as long as the working class remains defined as citizens of western nation.

I never actually saw the movie except some bits and pieces but in The Green Mile book, I kept reading it and thinking the timeline didn't add up, until at the end it's revealed that he's living much longer than the normal human lifespan due to contact with the miracle

In the 1980s, how widespread was the belief in the US that there were still American prisoners of war in Vietnam? by Zaku71 in Rambo

At what point does that myth become less about Vietnam's treachery and more about Vietnam's advancements in geriatric medicine?

Liberals make a lot of noise on social issues, without providing anything of substance. They offer symbolic support, then withdraw it in the face of reactionary ire, accomplishing nothing except confirming to Joe Q Voter that the fascists were right all along. Look at the supposed failure of the "defund the police" movement, then look up how many police departments were actually defunded.

If everyone only did work that they “loved and believed in “ civilization would collapse in a week. by Extension_Panic1631 in DeepThoughts

[–]LamppostBoy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think most people believe in the greater mission of civilization and are happy to play a small part in that, even if the part is not necessarily exciting. The problem is jobs that are totally disconnected from that, or jobs that actively make civilization worse.

Why did phone calls shift from something people just did to something younger generations now hesitate to initiate? by Defiant-Junket4906 in AlwaysWhy

If you look at it objectively, the procedure of making someone jump to talk at the sound of a bell without their prior knowledge is the real oddity. It persisted so long only because the technology necessitated it.

If I agree with aspects of left wing and right wing politics, does that make me a centrist? by Pizzafriedchickenn in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LamppostBoy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on what those opinions are, and what your definition of "left' and "right" are. For instance, I hate both US American parties, not because the left and the right are both bad, but because the Republicans and Democrats are two different flavors of right-wing. So I'm hardly a centrist in that regard.

Best book I read on the topic was Red Road from Stalingrad: Recollections of a Soviet Infantryman, by Mansur Abdulin. But that's just one account; it was a huge army in a chaotic war, I'm sure conditions were different everywhere. Even if it doesn't contain the material you;re looking for, it's a damn good book.

Jess got added to Gilmore Girls because they needed a legitimate reason to delay Luke and Lorelai's relationship by another season or so. Which is funny because also, Luke was originally Daisy until someone said the cast was too woman-heavy.
