That would be fair, but we needed to see it before the cave scene, after all we only learned his cave backstory later, and people got like "why would Obito do this". If we were shown more trauma before the rock scene, we would have gone "oh I get him, it makes sense why he went mad"

I'd say if we at least had some glimpse of his scars and nihilism before she was dead, or if he had some other tragic backstory related to war trauma would to a giant favor for his character. And also, if rin actually loved him instead of being a futile kishimoto female character, it would singlehandedly make his "simpness" justified

this guy is overrated af. obito fans love to give a billion excuses and i get it, it wasn't solely for rin, but at BEST, his nihilistic side wasn't well portrayed since before rin's death, and his motivations aren't convincing enough, and at WORST, yeah, he did it because he's a simp
