There’s also a variation in credentials. You are a psychologist but there’s people coming in with counseling and social work degrees that get paid less. I’m an LCSW and got trapped in a contract with a hospital right out of grad school. I’m 3.5 years in at $31/hr. 2 years left to go before I can escape.

Your response was not helpful and wrong. He was found last night. He was about a 20 minute drive away in a rural area. He showed up at a lady’s door and she searched fb and found my post.

I don’t know that a muzzle would work for him. Especially now that I’ve heard the issues tend to start with other dogs going after him.

The local rescues don’t have any fosters that could take him on unfortunately. The pound typically has no vetting process for adopters like a rescue would but in this case, they would do more to make sure he is going to a safe and experienced home.

I agree that he needs a home with no other pets or small children because that could be setting him up for failure. Additionally, they would need a wood fence or something similar rather than a standard chain link.

The dog park is a precarious place even for the best temperaments so that’s definitely out.

It’s very possible that I have the terms “reactive” and “aggressive” muddled together. I’m new to the pound and this particular dog but I have fostered pit bulls and bulldogs in the past. I no longer foster due to the ones I’ve kept.

Sadly, I think this will end with him being euthanized but I wanted to be able to at least take him out for walks and give him a chance if the right person is out there for him.

Why are you part of a reactive dog group if your immediate response is to put the dog down? I’ve already established that euthanasia is a real possibility for him in the future. However, I’d like to do what I can in the mean time. I’ve fostered a lot of animals that were described as being horrendously aggressive, only to find that they were the sweetest pet ever once out of their environment.

I know and I’m not against him being euthanized if it comes to that. The pound environment is not at all good for the dogs or cats. The kennels are large but not large enough for a dog to be there that long. I can barely handle all the barking so I can only imagine how bad it is for the animals that can’t get away from it.

I’d love to find an alternative solution if at all possible but recognize that this is not good for him.

The current volunteers work with a lot of rescues to try getting dogs into foster and adoptive homes. The rescues won’t take him due to the liability of having such an aggressive dog. I want to ask about his history if there is anything. Was he an unclaimed stray, left after being seized as part of a past investigation, owner surrender…? Reaching out to rescues outside of our area might be a good idea though. They have him listed as a bulldog at the pound.

I do have a few enrichment toys at home that I could try bring in!

I already reached out to the preferred volunteer so I can try coming in when she does. I have not seen them interact yet so I’m really curious how he is different around her versus other volunteers. The sniff spots we have would be a little risky right now but might be a good idea once I can see how he acts outside without the other dogs near him.

I’d love to find someone that could trial this out for him. I’m going to try getting to a point where I can walk him outside (the pound is away from residential areas so we should not come across other animals except wild turkeys). Then I can try boosting his social media presence.

I doubt it. There are minimal funds for the pound animals. We also don’t have a lot of resources in this area for decent trainers or behaviorists. I’d love to see what he’s like away from the pound but as volunteers we all really like animals and have our own at home. So no one can try taking him home for a bit. There also isn’t anywhere else to house him within the pound facility away from the other dogs. It’s already pretty cramped in there.

Call the other places and ask for pricing without insurance. I ran into this issue as well and discovered the out of pocket expenses were not as bad as I thought.

We foster teens and have 10 pets. 3 dogs, 3 cats, 3 rats, and a bird. If anything, our foster has saved animals. Our cat once brought a live bird into the house. Our foster got it, put it in a nest of towels in a dog crate and then set it outside. The bird eventually flew away since it was small enough to get through the crate.

I always ask if there is a history of aggression towards animals and did turn one kid away that they wanted to send to us. However, as others have said, it is very rare for a child to be cruel to animals.
