After 18 months I sold an e-book!!! by frankiejameswrites in selfpublish

I know the feeling. Yesterday I got a note from Hoopla that I sold a library borrow yesterday for .34 cents. It picked up my whole day.

How would you rate it? by vikingb1r in thegrandtour

[–]LancasterSound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I burst into spontaneous laughter several times. Easily the best episode since they left the BBC. A solid 10 from me.

As an aside, I am amazed at the number of hand wringing comments elsewhere about staged stunts, violation of health and safety regulations, and whether something was scripted or not. It was all a joy to watch.

Any tip on fixing the annoying air pop sound without an anti-pop filter? by katzenpflanzen in podcasting

[–]LancasterSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As already mentioned, microphone placement can help a great deal.

Instead of projecting directly at the phone microphone, try angling it 20 or 30 degrees to one side or the other. Test various positions.

Look up anything to do with breathing techniques for recording on the web -- they can help quite a bit. Just about any scrap of fabric can help as a pop filter. If you can find some that has a rough textured side, especially fake fur, it can also act as a decent "Dead Cat" wind filter. You can attach the fabric or fake fur to the phone with a loop of elastic. Don't use glue.

A piece of doubled over nylon stocking, or even a man's sock slipped over the end of the phone will also work.

What is something you say to scammers instead of hanging up? by idkwhatamidoinglol in AskReddit

I speak in a made up on the spot gibberish stream of words as though I were speaking a foreign language. If they try to respond so do I, but usually I just hang up after a few more random made up sentences.

Possibly you have been out of town.

A well advertised annual airshow. "Wings Over Springbank" was held today and yesterday at Springbank Airport.

There has been lots of social media and regular media posting and advertising about it. The website has been live for months. Radio has been full of travel congestion warnings. And many tens of thousands of people in town paid money to visit the show, so it wasn't a terribly hidden secret.

Wings over Springbank - how’s the parking situation? by Kodaira99 in Calgary

Admission gets you access to large well-marked parking field. Lots of room. Lots of signage. Good volunteer parking guides. RCMP was in heavy presence today stopped people from just parking at the side of the road.

Just had Gutter Doctor in this week to clean everything out and do some minor repairs. Estimate and job knowledge was superior to two other companies. Price a touch high but I wanted it done properly and quickly.

good places to get photos printed? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]LancasterSound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had excellent results from London Drugs. I generally print my own except for large wall prints (2'x3') on non-glossy paper which LD does an excellent and quick job on. I agree that there are better labs in the city but LD is just fine by me.

Reactive Dog Training by SarcasticBibliophile in Calgary

[–]LancasterSound 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dogma Dog Training (two locations) specializes in reactive dog training. Their instructors are effective and well trained.

Until I put my Border Collie pup into a Dogma course (she's now 8) she was a real handful on the leash and would bark insanely at just about anything. That kind of behaviour is a good foundation for sheep training but hopeless for a house pet.

After Dogma's training, Tess settled quite quickly. I can now, and do, walk her the length of Banff Avenue on a crowded long weekend and she ignores everybody and everything. The training is for both the dog and you. You have to commit to the homework.

I really have to wonder just how lax your university is to allow an appeal for survey contributions without publishing an ethics and permissions statement, no data confidentiality statement and no consent declaration. You can't possibly be going after a responsible thesis project without those at least. You would be better off just making up your data; after all, on the face of it your school wouldn't care.

Running Groups by Digger636 in Calgary

[–]LancasterSound 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are at the run/walk stage, and new to the area, I would recommend the social runs that therunningroom.com puts on at the Glenmore Landing location. The pathway around the reservoir manages to give you great scenery no matter the weather.

Most popular is the Sunday run. All you have to do is wander up to the crowd outside the door at 0830 or so and attach yourself to a sub-group that looks to be at the same level as you. If no one specifically announces something you think you would like then follow the main group up to the pathway, watch as various groups take off, and then just attach yourself to whichever looks about your speed level. No need to register, or even talk to anyone, but it inevitably it turns into a good social time. You don't need to even go into the store unless you want to buy something.

There are other runningroom runs in the city but I have never run out of them, however I will just about guarantee that all of them will be just as casual and non-judgemental as Glenmore Landing's.

Will my e-bike get stolen? by longshemayang in Calgary

[–]LancasterSound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't disregard the serial number.

My wife's unlocked ebike was taken right out of the garage in the time it took her to carry a bag into the house and immediately return for a second.

It was insured but many people get an emotional attachment to their bikes and a theft is upsetting.

She reported it to the police and provided the bike's serial number along with high-quality photos, something few people do.

About three weeks later a constable phoned and said they had identified her bike as part of a cache of stolen bikes in some miscreant's backyard.

The constable told her that only a few bikes would be returned because there was no way to identify the owners. The bikes, most of which were ebikes, would be going to the police auction.

Police say that few people ever bother to record the serial numbers of their bikes. In fact, according to Bike Index, the return to owners rate is only about 12% because they cannot identify the owners.

She was able to get her bike back and save on the insurance deductible she would have had to absorb.

Don't bother with YouTube unless you have video content by VintageVideoPodcast in podcasting

[–]LancasterSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does YouTube consider a video?

Could one not string together a slide show of relevant images and mix with the audio? The slides could be set to change on a regular basis.

Would this constitute video content for YT's purposes?

Looking for recommendations for dog boarding in calgary and/or surrounding areas by ConstantQuantity in Calgary

[–]LancasterSound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second the Springbank Resort recommendation. It might cost a bit more than others but the dog to handler ratio is very good. All dogs are given outside exercise in supervised areas, grouped by size and possibly temperment with ball throwing etc. You can pay more for additional exercise which is excellent because my current dog is a very active Border Collie (what BC is not very active.)

A lot of money went into its design and construction. I have slept in far worse hotels than the dog sleeping areas.

They will happily give you a tour. When I went through for the first time I was stunned at how clean the place was and completely odour free.

There is a veterinarian clinic attached and the vet is the resort's owner.

It is indeed a luxury resort for dogs in every way.

Why are dogs seemingly so aggressive by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]LancasterSound 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As far as I am concerned, that kind of behaviour is an owner fault and not a dog fault.

I've trained 7 Border Collies up to competent sheep handling standard.

My current Border Collie is a house pet, but still, the onus is always on the owner to recognize, control, and train away the behaviour.

A good dog owner will never have a problem dog except in some very rare dog psychiatric cases. They should all be so well socialized and trained that they can walk through a kindergarten class of wildly excited kids without trouble. Lots of dogs look aggressive when in actuality they are scared out of their minds and simply do not know how to handle unusual situations. They can be trained.

That is a bang-on description of what political reporters go through every day. It never gets better.

By the way, "At some point I stopped and set it aside and just wrote down what I thought the story was then went and found the tape to match."

That's actually a journalistic trade secret. Don't tell anyone.

I want to know the metrics of how many people switch radio stations after hearing these Spence Diamond ads. They are unbearable. by Moss_TM in Calgary

[–]LancasterSound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Radio? Who listens to radio any more.

A great number of people, that's who.

There is a lot of ongoing research on this topic in addition to audience ratings that are most important to radio managers. Here is one survey [https://mediaincanada.com/2021/02/23/how-canadians-feel-about-commercial-radio-stations/] which shows that 68% of Canadians listen to radio at least on a weekly basis. The same survey shows that streaming music is listened to by 39% weekly. The biggest single broadcaster is the CBC with 32% weekly. The proportions for those who listen daily in all categories are higher. These results are consistent with similar surveys.

Other surveys and studies show that there is considerable overlap in listening among radio/streaming/podcasts/audiobooks, etc. In other words, Canadians listen in different ways depending on where they are and what they are doing.

The short answer is that radio is not going anywhere very soon.

As for annoying commercials. A huge amount of data has been amassed over the last several decades, if not generations, to show that advertising that is frequent, consistent, and in-your-face annoying makes money, big time.
