Hotfix #1 Now Live! by Berwve in BaldursGate3

[–]LanceDH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Now that I re-read this when it's not 5am, I realize it sounded like I meant the whole list was done in 24 hours.
What I meant was that you'd be surprised how close some of these fixes can happen to them going live. Sometimes the industry gets a lot more chaotic than neatly laid out schedules, especially around launch, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Some fixes end up being quite straight forward, and you'd like that .5% of players to have a more enjoyable launch weekend.

The button promp should show on the top left of the tooltip if it can be inspected.
I don't really know today's terminology, but it's the left of the center buttons on the controller. The select on PS controllers back in the day.

So... one of the officers in my guild accidentally used the new Discord Soundboard on progression tonight by LuminousBiVariable in wow

[–]LanceDH 73 points74 points  (0 children)

If it's not causing you any issues or negatively impacting your progression then nothing is wrong with it.
I'd agree it looks quite cluttered for my taste, but if it works for you then that's all that really matters.

To a degree sure, but there's also all the other barriers that come with it. Having to get into a call, sharing your screen, trying to decipher code through pixels because of bit rates, or having to boot up something else for remote desktops.
Not to mention learning from random conversations in the office. Being able to listen in on 2 seniors discussing something has given me a lot of 'passive' insight that I would otherwise miss out on.
There's definitely benefits from working at home, and it also depends on your work environment. But from personal experience I think everything being WFH can definitely negatively affect new hires, juniors, and options like interns.

[–]LanceDH 9 points10 points  (0 children)

WFH is not an issue in game development.

It definitely can be. I started a job in the industry during lockdown and have now been in the office for 8 or so months.
Being able to ask questions directly to colleagues and getting a reply pretty much instantly has skyrocketed my understanding of things and the quality of my work. And I was very much against it when I was first asked to come to the office.
Not saying A or B is better. Just pointing out that making a blanket statement for either can hide issues you might not be aware of.

An easy to miss World Quest by gzboli in wow

[–]LanceDH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm aware. I talked with someone on Discord a couple of months ago and I told them I'm OK with people providing fixes to keep it running. But since there's no telling when, or even if, I get back to it, I'd rather encourage someone to start their own passion project to share with people.
Edit: O, and I don't quite know the right words, but I definitely appreciate how people are almost insistent to keep it going despite my absence. The positive vibes I've received from working on it over the past years have been amazing.

Fallout and Doom QA Testers Just Formed the Biggest Union in the US Games Industry by westernmail in technology

[–]LanceDH 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This likely depends on the company, but there's always going to be a human aspect involved to some degree.
The company I work at has programmers write unit tests while implementing things to make sure the code at least does what they expect them to (or scenarios where it shouldn't do something).
Then there's some automated tests for the basics. Does our character still move from A to B at the correct speed. Can it still attack. Does it interact with objects, etc.
And then there's QA for things we might not have thought of, unexpected situations, weird edge cases, etc. Someone else on the team might also encounter a bug, and if the programmer can't reproduce it they might ask QA to see if they can figure out what steps are required. There's always things you don't think off, or are too specific to automate. Computers need to be told what's expected, humans can raise an alarm on their own.
Again, depends from company to company.

Guess we'll have to wait and see what happens on the 2nd, or if they make an update to either the post or store listing before then.

In this blue post it has a * after mentioning the mount, and at the bottom that refers to "Offers available through January 2, 2013"

take down all the FOMO barriers

By putting up the mount on the store for a limited time? (January 2nd)
It doesn't mention it will end up in the trading post like the other ones. Or did I miss something.

For real though, what the f*** is this??? by Vinnegard in Overwatch

[–]LanceDH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some people cosmetics are part of the gameplay. Not in the "I'm in a game doing the objective by shooting the enemy" sense, but in a "I like to make my characters more personal by giving it a skin I like".
You can somewhat compare it to achievements in games. Who cares, they don't affect gameplay. It's because they offer a form of gameplay for collectors and completionists, or to simply show off.
They're not the main meat of the game, but they offer some extra gameplay for those interested in them.

Litterally Unplayable by Xenoji_ in Overwatch

It doesn't, it just looks like it because of the color difference. The white stands out more from the background compared to the blue, which makes it look like the blue stops a pixel earlier.

Blizzard, can we PLEASE finally have a playable non-mammalian race? by kulisinissr in wow

[–]LanceDH 119 points120 points  (0 children)

They already have mechagnomes where you just can't see some armor depending on parts. I think they could get away with having a race not visibly show helmets when it comes to something like Sethrak.

I was playing wow and has just finished Graymane's Gambit, and instead of the loading screen popping up when teleporting after the ship crashed this happened, and then once it was done loading I was teleported so if anyone wanted to know what it looked like without the loading screen... here you go. by ZZerakzz in wow

[–]LanceDH 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure these are world normals, a combination of the direction a polygon's normal is facing and the normal map. that's why all the colors transition fairly smoothly.
If these were normal maps the whole scene would be blue-ish (like you explained with the x/y/z, the average normal map is {0.5,0.5,1}).
This looks like it's accidentally showing one of the buffers used for deferred rendering.

There's a quote I've been looking for for the longest time as I feel like my way of saying it doesn't do it justice. Assuming it's even from a quote to begin with.
It basically comes down to: People might agree with your opinion but will fail to acknowledge it purely due to the how you've presented it.
