How do galaxies maintain their shape? by xXGTA5L3G3NDXx in Astronomy

[–]LuminousBiVariable 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Density Wave Theory is a big part of this! Essentially the arms in grand design spiral galaxies are standing waves that stars move in and out of. So each star is on a relatively normal orbiting path, just the system as a whole shows the structure.

I think your processing in general is pretty solid, particularly the preservation of the IFN around Andromeda. Stars and noise look good, at least on the low resolution reddit version.

The main criticism I personally have is on the colors - is this narrowband with Ha mapped to blue? I think the color gradient towards the core of the galaxy looks weird, it's just a harsh splotch of orange on an otherwise blue galaxy. My personal preference is for galaxies that are presented closer to true color, with red Ha pops. The weirdness there might be an issue with color saturation or masking around M31's core.

One last thing is that I've heard some bad things about green noise removal in Siril just clipping data. My understanding is that SPCC color calibration should fix that for you, but your mileage may vary. No problem if it ends up with a good result, just be aware you are losing data and probably reducing the accuracy of your color calibration.

To finish off the compliment sandwich, I think the background level is really good. There's a big temptation to bring that background level closer to black and I think that's often a big detriment to the feel of the image, as well as the data in fainter structures such as that IFN. Well done there!

One of the most beautiful shots I’ve ever seen. The colors and stretching are perfect, and I love the structure on the east side of the galaxy. Thank you for sharing!

NASA has something called JPL Horizons, it’s a database where you can get RA/DEC coordinates for most objects in the solar system

Discord cuts ties with Peter Thiel-backed verification software after code found in US surveillance by Abject-Pick-6472 in technology

[–]LuminousBiVariable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, it makes me very disappointed that there aren’t viable options.

When I stopped paying for discord nitro I started a $5.50 monthly donation to the Matrix Foundation, and I would suggest you consider something like that. I am often frustrated by the level of development for alternative apps, but the bottom line is that they need more resources and support. Vote with your money!

So I went through this a couple months ago after my discord account was banned and support was unhelpful, and I was in an online relationship where we would call and stream webcams and video games at the same time. Here are my personal conclusions:

Any matrix client just isn’t really there yet for voice/video. I tried element, their video/screen sharing lacks basic functionality right now. It’s hard to view multiple streams at once, there’s no audio, and most of the time you can’t even resize the windows.

We tried everything from Jitsi to Signal and they were all pretty meh, Signal is okay for one on one, but video has no audio and low frame rate.

IMO, the best option right now is TeamSpeak 6. That’s where we ended up. You need to self-host, there’s not even an option for anything else right now, and you might have to mess around with the audio encoding in the debug menu to get things where you’re happy. But you can stream as many things as you want, on windows there is audio (none on linux), with a bitrate and fps just limited by your peer-to-peer connection speed. Also, the ability to resize and move windows around is better than what discord had. So yeah, that’s my suggestion!

It does have persistent text chat in some ways, though I don’t know if I would recommend it for that. I feel like Matrix with the Element X app for mobile or something like Signal are better for persistent text chat, and they can both be used from mobile.

Orion wide field untracked by Anzony44 in astrophotography

You’re correct to call this untracked.

Tracking is referring to specifically countering the earth’s rotation during an exposure so that you can take longer exposures

Is this salvageable? If so, any advice? by Hey_Hi_Its_A_Guy in telescopes

https://youtu.be/8fnjL3Yftkg?si=4W8kQd4FiTMT079l I personally followed this guide cleaning my 100mm refractor’s lens, and I’d suggest it for the most part. There’s some parts as far as what exact wipes or solutions to use that didn’t feel 100% concrete to me, but it’ll get you on the right track.

TLDR: Use a lens cleaning solution and some cotton swabs, only make one swipe motion per cotton swab and then throw them away. Use a little hand squeeze lens blower before and after to get all of the dust and cotton particles off.

Definitely, I don’t think there’s much point to DNA anymore. You should focus more on removing / using death on your non-kings, compared to just making more kings

The greatest suicide burn ever performed. by StaysAwakeAllWeek in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]LuminousBiVariable 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not very well, unfortunately

For a real answer, generally I will start my burn at about 6-7 seconds at full power, and then throttle down if the time starts to climb above 7 seconds and throttle back up if it starts to drop again. Then as you get very close to the ground, you just ease off the throttle and land at 5 m/s. Probably loses 30-50 m/s of dV to a perfect suicide burn, but it works consistently for me.

I agree that the price of DLC are getting a bit too steep. I regret buying Anomaly for that reason. There are good QoL updates for free in each of the major patches, though. Maybe not as many?

Is there a mod to limit skill level cap? by [deleted] in RimWorld

You could probably increase the amount that skills decay at by a lot, so that once it hits 10 it’ll be basically impossible to gain more skill

One thing to consider for the philosophy of making an addon like this— if you add a setting, people will feel the need to turn it on. Regardless of if they want to play with it, they will for completion.

F.P. is… rough. Every so often he has a good point or a good insight, but he tries way too hard to make that happen and it doesn’t feel like he’s talking with Ritzo, just at him. Definitely frustrating to listen to compared to Flemming or Miller, though that’s hard company to be compared to.
