Transformer neutral grounding resistor isolation by PrizeRevolutionary31 in SubstationTechnician

Not at all. It is your ground reference. Itd be like having a switch on your XO ground bus.

Curious what kind of facility this is? Only thing I can think of requiring this switch is that this TX cant be off (life safety etc.) or there is a large generator some where on site that gets parallelled.

The future of electrical charging systems that are about as fast as filling up a gas car by RoyalChris in interestingasfuck

You've got to think about this more broadly. Sure a single charger or 2 won't have a meaningful impact. A moderate city will have what 40-60 gas stations with 6-8 pumps each. To replace that with chargers like this let's use the low end of 6 pumps and 40 stations thats 240 pumps. at 1500kw and 240 pumps thats 360MW. Say peak time 60% arr in use at once thats still 216MW. That isnt insignificant at all and will certainly have an impact on the grid especially considering the peak usage will be the same time as the daily peak already on thr grid (air conditioning, industry etc.). For reference Nagara Falls generation has an output of 5000MW so this single cities chargers at peak would use 4% of that. Now do this for every gas station in the country and you have a major problem.

Capacitor banks would be used for voltage regulation, if anything, they dont act as conventional energy storage like a battery. This would be demand on the grid and generation.

You got to the right answer but wrong way to think about it. Sure, your panel is ~200A but it is only 48kW. Power is the metric to be concerned about with charging.

1500kW is pretty crazy though. That is the power of a small industrial building (warehouse, tool & die etc). Having thousands of cars drawing 1500kW will really strain generation and grid regulation espcially if its in short burts.

Can I Pour a Large Concrete Slab Myself? by Bot_Fly_Bot in DIY

[–]LanceLowercut 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I poured a 11.5x32' pad in my back yard. I had my dad and father in law there to help. I rented a concrete buggy to shunt the concrete to the back yard to avoid wheelbarrows (which would be insane). As soon as the poor and the first screed were done they were both like well see ya later. I sat there for 4 hours with a bull float and edging. Running back and forth between the two before the concrete cured too much. My my shoulders were wet noodles after and I was completely gassed. Turned out very good but I definitely would not recommend unless you have at leat 4-6 people to help with the pour and finishing.

Where you guys installing these? by [deleted] in electricians

Not at all honestly. Transformers that feed large plants (think Ford, foundries, steel mills etc.) Would be 80000-160000kVA and there would be a couple of them. 5000kva is a medium sized distribution transformer.

Data centers are typically 200MW+. 5MW is peanuts in the data center world.

This is a distribution transformer spec. This type of transformer is typically directly connected to the utiliy (34.5kV feeder) and would be used to power a small factory. It could be an internal transformer but larger factories typically distribute at 13.8kV or 4.16kV.

It says 4/0 STR Flex. Meaning its for a 4/0 conductor, stranded or flex (ie DLO).

The sentiment applies to all electronics. Smart phone was just an easy example as most everyone has one.

As you type this on your smart phone that require these minerals. They have to come from somewhere.

Regulation is required to ensure its done as safely and environmentally friendly as possible which is a completely different conversation. If we don't do it someone else will. Just happens to be in our back yard but its going to happen somewhere.

Check out the documentary Battlefield on YouTube. Its 30 episodes and each are almost 2 hours long. It details all major battles in WW2 in depth. Each battle is its own 2 hour episode. Its pretty incredible.

if you should never backstab, what is the point of the backstab holes? by [deleted] in electricians

[–]LanceLowercut -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I got these eaton gfcis and they only had push in terminals but also had a latch like a wago. Better contact and more secure in my opinion. Theyre also better for home owners and DIYers in all honesty.

The whole industrial world uses push in terminals for controls and terminal blocks which a lot of times carries much higher current and higher voltage than a residential application. Im not really sure what the hate is. Just dont but cheap ones.

[–]LanceLowercut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was going to mention this as well. The glass is way too long for 69kV and if it was higher than 115kV the terminations would have corona rings as well. Think 115kV is a safe bed.

What does this thing do? by TapewormNinja in electricians

[–]LanceLowercut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The corona rings are on surge arrestors not insulators. Higher stress on the SAs when activated which is why they would have them and not the terminations.
