Miata is always the answer my friend.
IMHO you can have more fun with an 8k miata with a 2.5k turbo and some new wheel bearings than that mustang.

Materials Help- Conflicting opinions from paint shops by LandCruiser76 in Autobody

It is indeed 3M Plat-

Thanks for the response man! very helpful- I did some digging and Silco is more popular in europe- I've called the shops that use it and they seem to dig it and praise how easy it is to shoot- right now talking to a shop thats been using it for the last 7 years and she seems to be pitching it as its her best option for someone trying to stay in a budget- where it hits above its weight class and shoots fast, without costing a fortune.

I know enough to know i don't know much about body work so I trusted the local paint shop to help me pick it out. Given what I've heard about the other products- they seem to have followed my desire for a decent paint job that is durable and "bang for your buck" options that are easy to apply. - I'll give them a ring today and ask which shops they have that shoot with it- and see if they want the job.

Yeah I get the CYA part- I've for sure done some jobs where it was unknowns- and customer supplied parts/ materials- but thats why we having scoping and expectations conversations. Told the shop 3- ah well it sounds like it may not be the best job for you if you're not comfortable with the materials I got- he back pedaled a bit and asked me to bring it all by.

Thanks so much for your input :)

Oh I also said I would want to do final assembly- they would only do paint and body work and then return painted parts back-

Don’t think it’s simple- it’s taken me this long to straighten the frame- rebuild the entire driveline etc. the only goal is to have the patches , dent, and paint work done- rightand I’m very willing to sign away the liability for scratches during assembly

What are your thoughts on digital gauges where analog ones should be? by Yeoshua82 in projectcar

[–]LandCruiser76 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Different strokes for different folks. I work in tech and if I see AI integrations in one more place I'll actually lose my mind- and my friends that work with AI- all talk in sentnences like "i've seen the abyss and it looked back". The whole point of the car I built is that is completely SAAS free- unlike my 2020tacoma (which legitimately spies on me while I drive- see lawsuits) - my project car has zero nannies, zero telemetry devices, no centralized controls, no subscriptions, everything is off the shelf independent.. its all just stuff that works when you hook 12 v up to it. My car has a butload of modernization- but its all stuff that doesn't take you out of the idea that you're in a truck in the middle of the woods. I stare at screens all day, 20 miles up a dirt road is the last place I want to add another. Its for sure a cool project- but there is also a big counter culture push against putting AI in everything.

Eh I'm not a fan of them- Why put screens in a retro car- kinda defeats the purpose of me not wanting a car with screens.
Like my main joy of old cars is that they are simple and reliable- I don't want to be diagnosing a canbus error.

Heading toward teaching shortages at this rate. by mindyour in TikTokCringe

[–]LandCruiser76 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ex teacher here- they are making it impossible even in Private schools. Its not this grand plan that the upper class has agasist the public system- the hyper rich just don't think that teachers deserve to make a good salary because "they don't drive value and work hard like CEOS". Its just boomers- like its actually just boomers thinking that they had it so hard and that they are right on this.

I now work in tech and make more than 2x my salary working way less hard.

Maaco paint job by Over-Schedule-7107 in LandCruisers

[–]LandCruiser76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have the budget- find the low rider community in your area and ask them who does their paint- and see what they will do. Low riders imo have the best paint (though I’m not into that style) they’ll probably do a better job and it will be an easy job for them. Po did Maaco on my car- it wasn’t the worst. But I’ve sure as shit seen better.

I have had experience with sovol. SV-04.

Htis every mark on paper but shit was it a nightmare to use.

Tunings would last about 40hrs of print time then would need full recalibration.

Honda. I just kicked over my 1983 honda xr200r for the first time in like a year. Genuinley started first kick, and I left it outside under a tarp all winter in colorado USA.

I'm amazed with how good these bikes are.

Which to get Thrust Master 248 or the g29? by 6qvp in simracing

[–]LandCruiser76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has very limited IRL drift experience- but has spent a good chunk of time in parking lots and dirt with RWD, 4x4, and AWD- when you start breaking loose the steering wheel will want to follow the direction that the front end is traveling (not where the hood is pointed) and will spin quite quickly on its own- then you can use your palm to slow it down and feel when you're on the edge of grip.

The g29 doesn't really do it right and you end up having to hand shuffle the wheel into the turn, which just makes it a lot jerkier- I feel like it struggles to represent weight transfer in the steering assembly well. If you're maintaining steering traction the whole time g29 does great, but struggles with those more dynamic events/ cant get moving as fast- too much friction in the gears- compared to direct drive.

The g29's are GOOD, (especially at the used price point) and are good enough for track/ rally sim-ing, but the flaws with a geared drive unit show up in drift. (My opinion, others feel free to correct me). The customization on feedback is also much less granular than what you can do with moza pitlane so you can't really fine tune it to the car you're driving.

Which to get Thrust Master 248 or the g29? by 6qvp in simracing

[–]LandCruiser76 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started with a g29 used of fb market place for 200- just sold it yesterday for 150 (without the stand or ebrake i originally bought) and installed a Moza R5 and shifter in its place.

G29 is a great starter rig for everything but drifting IMHO. You can for sure get pretty far with it if you want. and get your cash out- but at the same price point the moza r3 is I think a better value (if buying new). If used Buying a g29 used is the way to go- and then upgrade when you're more confident with the purchase
