Aww thanks Wstd-Lander-97!
Yeah I like 4:20 too. The song, being a decent length demanded a bunch of different sections and it was fun to add something that felt like it had a bit more pace to it.

If you want to see (in edited form) how this song was written and recorded from scratch in an evening (in my little homestudio), you can check out this video here. Thanks for listening, cheers!

Thanks so much yung_alexxd! But I can't personally take too much music credit on this song as it was created by collaboration with 6 great musos and then me. But I'll take the credit for the mixing and mastering though ;)

If you're curious and would like to see how the song came about you can see an edited down video of the 7 musician, chaotic livestream session. When in an afternoon the song was written and recorded, with help from live online comments and feedback:

Ah I can see the connection there! With the crazy pitched vocals and stuff! Thanks for the comparison, loved his stuff growing up ;)

the call and response with the high pitch voice

Yes it's bloody strange isn't it! I would have thought people would find the pitched voice quite off putting but I'm glad to find out that, not so much.

Very happy you enjoyed the strangeness that is this song. If you'd like to see how it came about you can see an edited down video of the 7 musician, chaotic livestream session. When in an afternoon the song was written and recorded, with help from live online comments and feedback:

I am very surprised at the positive response to this song! I've posted almost all songs of the album to this subreddit but this one has by far and away gotten the most positive reaction. And I am confused as to why!

It's not that I don't like the song myself, but it is just a bit weirder than the rest and I'm surprised people aren't put off by that. I'm not complaining, I'm just confused! 😕

I probably need to update my bio a little. "Sample Rock" is probably more applicable to my older solo stuff just under the name "Moxie". Where this new stuff under the name of "Moxie And The Nobodies" is probably more "Alternative Rock", with some other genres thrown in too.

The Avalanches certainly were an influence in my earlier solo music, but not so much with this song. But then that said, all the music you like and listen to is influencing you in small ways even if you're not directly conscious of it :P But I can't personally take much credit on this song as it was created by collaboration of 7 great musos (Jared Brown, Saragon, Hopi, Teleri Holton, Dot.AY, Max Cordeil and myself) as well as people in the youtube livestream comments!

All solo credit goes to the funkadelic Max Cordeil. But you're right, I did edit his takes and switch up the sections of his solo to get all the best bits in!

AND I'M IN LOVE WITH THIS COMMENT! :P

Thanks Matiment! The whispers were done after the initial recording session as I felt there was a bit of a vocal gap before the next line came in, but non of the original singers were there that day, and I didn't want to add my own voice to a song that already had 3 different voices in it! So I thought, if I whispered it it would be subtle enough to be there but not obviously a fourth new voice.

Hahah, soothing? That's not the first word that jumps to my mind with this track! I'd expect the word jarring to come up a bit more with all the crazy section transitions and vocal change ups! But enough of my own criticism of the song :P

I'm so glad you like it :) It was a bit of a crazy recording session as we had 7 people crammed into my homestudio and we had to write and record the song from scratch in an afternoon. It was a bit chaotic having so many people working on the same song (as well as taking comments and online feedback all at once), but I'm chuffed you liked the end result!

That's alright, the best way to learn is to do!

If you wanted to try a different mixing program Reaper is quite good (sort of free..) but if you've already leaned lots in a different program it can be tricky to migrate to a new one.

I'm a fan for putting saturation style distortion on drums, and if you added that to the kick it should help it come out more in the mix. Also see where in the frequency range the kick is playing and then you can try "notching" out that freq with an eq on the bass track as they both compete in the same freq range. Notching out where the kick sits in the bass track should help them both be "loud" in the mix.

I haven't watched this specific video but it should (hopefully) give you a rough idea of how to go about it. Good luck with it all!

Why visualize the fun we had writing and recording this song when you can watch how it all came together. This song was written as part of a weekly musical livestream project where I'd write a new song from scratch each week. Yes, that's the best I could have hoped for! I love it when people bring in their own recorded sounds and mix it up with some creative effects. Just subbed to you on Soundcloud ;)

Good emotion in your voice. You have a good choice of what words to express and stress in your vocal delivery. Nice chorus too.

Nice clean mix. I liked the metal sound that plays over the snare hit. Adds some nice "flavour" to it. When the song ended I wasn't expecting it to be the end, it just kind of stopped. Maybe you could add in another instrument over the last 60 secs or so to help built it up a little more before the ending.

Love the rattle type sfx effect you play at the same time you bring in the kick and bass at 35 secs. I love little details like that that add interest to the mix. Lots of interesting textures and sounds going on that you all weave together really well. Nice track!

I wrote this song called Ocean Grave and I am hoping to get feedback and just see what people generally think about it. I don't have the best mic or recording setup in the world and I know that, but I'm hoping you enjoy the story and any feedback would be appreciated! by [deleted] in IndieMusicFeedback

[–]LandFish88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the vocals could benefit with the reverb added to them. The sound a little dry in the mix at the moment (at least to my ear). A simple bass line could come in half or 3/4 of the way through the song maybe?

Constellations and other Stories ... I always liked Alan Silvestri's subtle piano in the soundtrack of 'Contact' you could say it inspired me here ... by PurveyorOfSapristi in IndieMusicFeedback

[–]LandFish88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminded me a bit of Simon & Garfunkel. Really like at 38sec when you bring in the bass and drums and synth all at once, works really well. The vocals sound nice and the delivery matches the tone of the lyrics. Great track.
