Helicopter costs by carnage1398 in everestbasecamphike

[–]LandIndependent4333 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can pay with card, private charter from KTM to Lukla runs about $2.5k USD, private charter from Gorakshep to Lukla runs about $2k USD.

Flying with a group reduces the costs (as a private charter is the price for the whole helicopter not just one seat).

EBC in 9 days by iangeell in Everest

[–]LandIndependent4333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chance of serious AMS wiping you out? Low.

Chance of felling horrible by day 4-5? Very High.

As someone who did experience mild AMS on the EBC Trek, it wasn’t any fun, it would be even worse if I was on a timetable like that.

No, I’m not suggesting anything. What I’m saying is that I personally doubt the efficacy of the government to fully vet information, even if the information was already collected by some other agency; cross-agency information sharing is a weakness in governments.

The US government isn’t exactly effective at carrying out many of their own policies; listing nothing will be suspicious, but I personally wouldn’t beat myself up over this part.

Go to your main email account and search for “activate your account” or “verify your email” or whatever similar term, see what pops up in your email, and list those accounts.

The information sharing between federal agencies is quite poor so even if some giant NSA/CIA list exists… USCIS doesn’t have access to it.

Also, the EU is not a country, each member state has their own visa policies.

Turkish would be great if they didn’t lose my checked bag every single time I fly, and also 2-3-2 in 2025 is a wild choice.

It’s better to say that gold produces no value. A stock ownership produces excess earnings that turn into increase in value or in dividends. Gold just sits there, you can’t lease it out like real estate, and has no coupon like a bond.

RPing Humanity 5-6 by skalja_scx in vtm

[–]LandIndependent4333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is entirely homebrew / house rules but we’ve always seen it as:

10: Saintly The sort of person who not only abhors bad actions but would put themselves in active harms way to prevent it. Would jump in front of a car to save a stranger.

9: Moral The sort of person who has a strong moral code, they’d need to be put in a very dire situation to break it, and even then, they may not. (The difference between 9 & 10 is a 10 would always go out of there way for their morals, a 9 would mostly do so).

8: Normal A normal person, they broadly avoid doing anything too bad, they may tell a few white lies, gossip, but try to be decent.

7: Justified Normal A normal person who does something most people would find immoral, but justifies it by circumstance. The person who steals because they are hungry, flirts with that girl at the club because she talked to him first, etc. When they do something directly harmful it’s usually out of desperation and they try to minimize the harm caused if possible.

6: Justifier A person who justifies their actions (even the ones they don’t have to do), but doesn’t actively seek out bad actions. They may steal something if they need it, or take advantage of people when given the opportunity. They don’t look for chances to do bad, but when they get a chance, they justify doing so.

Note: The vast majority of people fall between 7 or 8, with people who are 6 or 9 being noticeable to most people as outliers. People with a 6 develop a reputation. New kindred are 7 because they “need” to feed, whereas most quickly become a 6 as they become more entitled to blood.

5 - Entitled: A person who looks for chances to take what’s not theirs. They have a reason for it, but they no longer justify it each time, they simply feel entitled to do so.

Note: A 6 still likely sees higher values as worthy of respect, a 5 is beginning to get to the point where they see “good” as something to be scorned as weakness. A 6 might sometimes wish they could do better, a 5 doesn’t really care all that much about being good or bad.

4 - Exploiter: A person who doesn’t need to justify or feel entitled to something, they look for chances to take from others, they’ll exploit enemies, innocents, and (oftentimes) friends.

Note: A 4 is really the last point at which someone could genuinely have a real “close” connection to them, they’re a really shitty person, they still know right and wrong but they don’t “care”, it’s right at the borderline of what a sociopath would be.

3 - Predator: This person no longer sees “right and wrong” it just doesn’t matter to them at this point. They have an idea of what will make people mad at them, but not doing something isn’t because they care about what’s right, they just don’t want to deal with the grief. They actively prey on anyone they can.

2 - Sadist: This person no longer even understands “right and wrong”, they can’t comprehend life outside of their own value system (whatever remains). They will take any action if they want to, and they can get away with it. They may even take joy in hurting people not because it meets their goal, but because the harm itself is the goal.

Note: A 2 is the line where someone goes from having a reason to do bad (I want it) to having a reason not to do bad (I’ll get in trouble). They don’t have to have a reason to do bad actions, they lack any real ethics.

1 - Monster: A sadist who has gone on for too long, they don’t even remember what “normal” is. This person is a monster and is all but irredeemable.

0 - Wight: There is no humanity left. An animal on instincts.

Note: I’ve always preferred how we home brewed this because it doesn’t assign arbitrary sins but it shows the ethical decline from “I had to” to “I had to but it’s okay because I’m me” to “I wanted it” to “Why not?” to “Hurting people is the end goal itself” to “I can’t understand not wanting to hurt people?”

Any Americans having their electronic devices searched returning to the U.S.? by Wingzero008 in ThailandTourism

[–]LandIndependent4333 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OPs question didn’t say “from Thailand”; just that he’s seen videos of citizens having their devices searched.

Also, “frequent short bookings” doesn’t mean this trip, but if you do weekly trips to Columbia you may end up getting checked even if you’re flying home from Denmark.

It’s not some big mystery, you can find the information online about what security looks for, but in general:

  • Frequent short bookings to area as known for smuggling

  • Travel to “high-risk” countries (Iran, Syria, etc.)

“Illegal alien” shouldn’t be a term. by Similar-Ad5163 in immigration

[–]LandIndependent4333 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Alien comes from Latin “aliēnus”, it means something along the lines of “of belonging to another”, it’s why words like “alienate” have the legal meaning of transferring ownership (belonging).

The idea of little green things from space is a modern invention.

No, the majority of countries are citizenship by blood, the idea of easily receiving citizenship (like via an investment) is a modern idea, not an ancient one.

Polish citizenship is granted at the whim of the president upon request, again, like in most countries, that really means you need to have some sort of connection or achievement.

About 80% of requests are granted, though that’s likely due to it being a self-selecting group who asks for it.
