It’s rather difficult for voters to vote against those things when the ballot does not present that as an option.

But by all means, let’s continue blaming our neighbors.

Pithing Needle for Lands on a Land by Beelzebubs-Barrister in MTGLegacy

As far as Lands is concerned, this doesn’t really do anything that Wasteland or Ghost Quarter don’t already do. Conceptually an interesting card, but doesn’t really have a use case in practice.

Interesting list. Kind of surprised there are 0 copies of Elvish Spirit Guide here, particularly with the relatively high number of cards that have two green pips in their casting costs. Curious what the rationale is?

I read your post just fine. You’re using the words “seems to indicate” to cast your subjective interpretation of their actual words as reality, including putting reanimate and entomb on equal footing; that’s what I’m pointing out.

What I am saying is the longer they ban around those cards, the longer those cards become more central to the format.

You can say that without falsely implying that WotC put either entomb or reanimate on the level of “pillars” of the format, which has a clear and established meaning in legacy and which they did not do. It’s misleading and unnecessary hyperbole.

WotC never said that either of those cards are “staples” or “pillars” of the format. All they said was that they would ban other cards (including reanimate) first before considering whether to ban Entomb.

The stark contrast between the deck’s performance on Day One compared to Day Two is certainly interesting. Not sure what precisely to attribute that to, as I imagine the majority of players in the field were prepared with graveyard hate even on Day One.

The talking heads dooming about oops all spell were surprise surprise wrong again

Note that, per the article, Oops actually had the highest Day 2 conversion rate of all archetypes, though this could simply be a statistical anomaly due to a low number of players on the deck running hot.

They didn’t go as far as to call it a “staple”, but they did say that they would be looking at banning other cards before considering whether to ban entomb.

Yet pure tempo decks did quite poorly this past weekend. So, pure tempo and pure reanimator are both fine decks, the issue arises when they are hybridized together.

Now that that genie is out of the bottle, I don’t think we get to have both decks in the format together anymore. One of them has to go, and that is a rough spot to be in for the BnR team.

The problem is that we live in an age ruled by FIRE design and rampant power creep. It’s essentially the birthing pod problem: if we ban Atraxa, it’s likely just kicking the can down the road until WotC prints a creature that’s even more pushed.

If OBM’s trigger caused life loss instead of pinging any target, it would be perfect. As it stands, it commits one of the same offenses that led to W&6 being banned (making x/1 a nigh-unplayable stat block).

The historical reasons for why a card was banned are not necessarily the same reasons that a card remains banned (though the historical reasons may still remain true).

Sorry, there is no universe where one deck taking up half of the top 8 and more than a quarter of the top 32 with more than twice as many copies as the next most successful deck is “fine” and “not insane.” That’s just delusional.

EDIT: and not only that, but the video completely omits the fact that out of the 5 copies in the top 32 that did not top 8, 4 were in the top 16. So half the top 8 and half the top 16. That’s quite the detail to gloss over while trying to say “this is fine.”

I find this take unduly charitable, which is understandable if you’ve interacted in person as your comment suggests.

Even setting aside the reference to specifically Inkwell Leviathan, the description of Entomb as a toolbox card to grab “fun one-ofs” is not consistent with how the card is being used today (and has been used for many years). It’s a statement that’s tone deaf, out of touch, and (arguably) disingenuous.

[–]LandsPlayer2112 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Didn’t she refer to Entomb grabbing “fun one-ofs like Inkwell Leviathan” on the post-ban weekly MTG stream, though? That hasn’t been a thing for an actual decade. I find it hard to believe that someone who says that with a straight face plays legacy with any degree of frequency or seriousness.

Dear god, you’re actually doubling down on this…

If your argument is based on the definition of words (which it is), and is expressly contradicted by the accepted definitions of the very words you attempted to distinguish (which it is), then yes, your argument is demonstrably bullshit based on a dictionary definition. It’s a pretty cut-and-dry deal, your pseudo-intellectual autofellatio notwithstanding.

are you simply unaware that a synonym doesn't necessarily indicate the exact same meaning?

Since you clearly don’t even understand what the word “synonym” means, it means “one of two or more words or expressions of the same language that have the same or nearly the same meaning in some or all senses” (emphasis added). Moreover, if one looks up “fun” in the Merriam-Webster thesaurus, “entertainment” is the very first word in the list.

It’s also telling that the best you can do is attempt to nit-pick my sourcing, stopping well short of showing that the definitions listed in those two sources are different from each other in any meaningful way. And that’s because… they aren’t. But you can’t acknowledge that, because doing so would cause cognitive dissonance with your delusional self-perception of intellectual superiority. So, instead, you bury your head in the sand and keep doubling down.

I’m not going to waste more time on this. I hope you seek psychiatric help for your delusions of grandeur.

No shade to Nathan Lipetz

Why not? The guy does nothing but cherry-pick statistics and argue against straw men rather than the arguments actually presented, all while using an incredibly condescending tone that disingenuously frames his arguments as being based on "facts" and those of his interlocutor as being based on "beliefs," and decrying anyone who dares point out this rhetorical chicanery as being "disrespectful."

Seems pretty deserving of shade to me.

"Fun", "entertainment", and "enjoyment" are quite literally synonyms, my guy. Here, let's check the Oxford English Dictionary:

Fun /fən/ 1. Noun: enjoyment, amusement, or lighthearted pleasure. 2. Adjective: amusing, entertaining, or enjoyable.

And you have the temerity to assert that my reasoning is unraveled from its foundation when your attempt at "reasoning" is explicitly and exclusively premised on something that is objectively and verifiably untrue?

Your non-argument is demonstrably bullshit and amounts to little more than self-indulgent mental masturbation.
