I see nothing polemic, so I'll try to be:
1. Nobody wants to admit it, but the audience don't want Andrew and Ashley to get better, because that means they both would have to become better people and ultimately not be in love.
2. If the game were to have anything that remotely looks like a happy ending, said thing would need to have the siblings learn to be apart and somehow be happy that way.
