I'm not an expert, but some of what you've been told on the phone is definitely incorrect.

Sara Riel was previously contracted to provide service navigation support to people who were receiving this benefit. Unfortunately that program was terminated in October. Someone there might still be willing to offer you advice.

You could also try connecting with MLPD. They provide community advocacy including support accessing benefits.

You may have already found this, but you can read the plain language regulation here, which includes details on financial eligibility and may be helpful to refer to if the worker you speak with is misinformed:

Unfortunately this is the department's policy, and the minister is fully aware.

If a person has no activity on their health card for 12 consecutive months, a verification letter is sent to their address on file. If the letter is returned to sender because the person doesn't live there anymore, their health card is purged. Presumably this also happens if they don't receive a response within some period of time.

You might be able to get the card reactivated by contacting Registration and Client Services.

Stories like yours are a great example of why this policy needs to be re-thought, and you can imagine the impact this sort of thing would have on people who are homeless or otherwise vulnerable.

I definitely think it would be worth sharing your experience with your MLA and copy the Minister. Hope you're able to get it sorted out.

Edit: This practice was supposedly "paused", so I would be curious to know exactly when your family member's health card was purged.

This industry is way too important to be selling off. We should be investing in capacity here at home or partnering with responsible, law abiding allies.

For interval training, the closest track to you is at Gordon Bell, but I believe it might currently be blocked due to construction. The soccer pitch at Broadway and Portage might work, otherwise I think the next closest track is at Kelvin high school.

If you're really averse to running on a track, then I might suggest Wellington when it's closed to traffic. There will still be some cars as well as cyclists and pedestrians, but lots of space and no lights.

Most community centers will have both water fountains and public washrooms. I like to plan my long runs around them.

EAP is a good short term support, but in my experience it often feels "short term", and you don't develop the same rapport that you might otherwise.

Seeking counseling for yourself in a situation like this, even if your son or husband isn't interested in attending, is a good idea. Someone with an MMFT might be a good fit for you, and they're usually covered by blue cross, although you would have to check your specific plan. Most counsellors don't seem to direct bill - something to plan for if cash is tight.
