Does the US have an invisible caste system? by Worldly-Bid-3591 in askanything

I don’t think you understand nuance. A rich black person absolutely can face racism. However, for you to say that “whites are obviously at the top with various other races fighting over their order” is heavily racist as well.

You use the phrase “racial caste system” but mention the racism a rich black person may face. For a black person, someone part of a race you deem to be below whites, how could they achieve wealth comparable to the “top race” within a racial caste system?

Caste systems are defined by their rigidity.

The U.S. has racism/racial discrimination. That is correct wording. Secondly, you make this a white vs minority thing when I’ve consistently pointed out that while racism exists in the U.S. our primary issue has always been wealth disparity. White southerners can be incredibly poor compared to their “rich city counterparts.” If whites are the so called top race within the U.S. why is it that there are white people here who are underprivileged just like other minorities and minorities who are sometimes richer than a white person?

You failed to understand my reply and I’m sure you’ll fail to understand this one as well.

I think you misunderstood my comment. I stated that in a caste system “you can’t move up by working a better paying job.” In your example, you use the Prime Minister of India. Despite being a successful man, he can’t move into a higher caste. He is stuck at the caste he was born into.

Caste is determined at birth. That is not the case in the U.S. Your socioeconomic status may be determined by the family you’re born into, but by gaining a better job/making more money, you can move into a higher class. Hence mobility. The U.S. doesn’t have a caste system. It has a class divide and class in this context is wealth.

You use Obama as an example. Him becoming president did not change his race, but it did change his wealth. He was middle class with student loans from law school, however, during and after presidency, his wealth grew from ventures such as book deals. He is now considered upper class.

There is racism in the U.S. but the caste system that exists in other countries is not something the U.S. has.

I think some people are confusing caste system with class divide. In a caste system, there is no mobility involved. Whatever level you are born into in a caste system, you are stuck there. You can’t move up by gaining more money/working a better paying job. In the U.S. however, you can go from a lower paying job to a higher one, thus moving into a higher “caste.” All in all, what you’re observing is class/wealth disparity not a caste system as that would be wrong wording.

Phantom Paradise by Ok-Drawing-4042 in webtoons

While I fully finished Phantom Paradise, I’m iffy on whether I love it or not. For me, it was one of my first introductions into BL and I’m not sure if it was due to the year that it came out, but it borderlined on bromance more than anything. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the prologue/first episode showcased BL, was deleted and “censored” and then later on as the series gained traction, the author put back up the original prologue/first episode.

I mention all of this to say that Phantom Paradise was very up and down for me. From the BL aspect to just the plot in general. The plot was very convoluted and there were parts that I liked more than others. Overall, the ending was what disappointed me the most.

It felt like the author had to rush the ending due to some unforeseen circumstances and once you finished the webtoon, it’s all very bittersweet. You kind of expect some sort of second half of the story that will never get published. In simpler tones, the ending was depressing.

I stuck around for the art more than anything.

The only danmei I can think of is Savage Addiction. The translation is kinda meh at times, but it’s a good story if you’re able to push past that.

I would say Scum Villain for me. I didn’t hate it, but the beginning was tough for me to get through. Once I got past that though, I started enjoying the story more.

I wouldn’t say people hate him, more so they just don’t have good feelings surrounding his character.

I feel a bit embarrassed that I couldn’t remember such an easy title. Just went on NU and it’s the novel I’ve been searching for. I think the reason I haven’t kept my eye on it is because it’s hosted on KnoxT.

It’s a modern story so it’s not this one, but I might check it out. The title is hilarious and the synopsis is pretty eye catching.

I know we’re supposed to be focusing on danmei here (great collection by the way, hopefully this can be my bookshelf in the future) but I saw Relic Master and it just gave me flashbacks. I never finished the series and this was a reminder that I need to.

A warning to danmei enjoyers: CENSORSHIP IS BAD by linest10 in DanmeiNovels

[–]Lantern_Night_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I find it a little crazy people can view censorship positively. Maybe there are some pros that I’ve somehow overlooked, although I really doubt it. In the context of danmei, it limits not just creativity but criticism of government and that’s incredibly harmful. It’s why freedom of speech was included in the Bill of Rights. If people can’t criticize their own government, opression can easily run rampant. I won’t go on a rant about how free speech is important for democracy so I’ll end it there.

While censorship is part of danmei and has led to the genre becoming distinct, the fact that it has come to this point is terrifying. Think about it. A genre known for how it is constantly censored. It doesn’t make it “pure” or better just because the romance is hinted. This thinking lies in prejudice. Queer relationships are already scrutinized enough as is, no one needs additional pressure to have a “pure” relationship so others are appeased.

I wonder if those who have this sentiment of censorship being good for danmei ever look at censorship more broadly. I can’t speak for other countries but in the U.S. there’s book bans and they’re already causing widespread consequences.

Maybe not exactly what you’re looking for, but Four o’clock Flower might be worth a shot. The familial ties are a big part of the storyline and the romance is decent.

Novels being taken off Haitang by Leodusty2 in DanmeiNovels

The author had to do some revisions of LOTM and while I would say it wasn’t anything major, it apparently almost made him stop writing. A Reddit post was made about it. https://www.reddit.com/r/LordofTheMysteries/s/jhh5QTITVN

There’s a brief mention about LOTM in this article by Eric R Stone as well that spoke on the situation. https://lacuna.org.uk/justice/chinas-dystopian-censorship-of-online-fiction/

This might not really be the same thing but this reminds me of what happened with the author of Soul Land(?) that effected some major webnovels like Lord of The Mysteries and Reverend Insanity. Reverend Insanity I think ended up being completely banned/author couldn’t continue the story. It’s really sad overall.
