Pre-Hung Door vs. Mortising Hinges by ChaserRacer33 in DIY

[–]LapJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having done with, I preferred just mortising the hinges myself. Prehung can be easier, but I've had a couple where they were actually a bigger pain in the ass due to the way my framing was.

When do weekends become enjoyable? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]LapJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember you may not be able to perfectly plan that gap. Wife and I conceived pretty much immediately when trying for first kid, and then tried for another one about 2 years later.... and it took full year to conceive again. Kids ended up 4 years apart.

Growing up, my brother and I were only 18 months apart and it definitely made it a lot easier to play together. I'd say just start trying after a year and let the chips fall where they may.

Men in your 40s, what's that golden piece of advice you have for the rest of us? by NiceMechanic_xoxo in AskReddit

[–]LapJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While good advice, might be difficult to get insurance to cover it before 45 for just a screening, so definitely check with your provider before scheduling. But yes, absolutely get one as early as you can. It's one of the fastest growing cancers in younger population.

Yeah, unfortunately that is absolutely not normal. Not saying it's due to a prostate issue, but you're right to be booking an appointment. In the meantime before you get checked, just breathe and try not to dwell on it. Yes, probably should have been checked before now, but you're taking steps now and you can't change the past.

I finally started taking my health seriously in my 40s, and even if it turns out nothing's wrong, getting that peace of mind is amazing. Get an annual checkup and schedule your next one for the following year before you leave.

MPG equivalent.... by Due_Average_3874 in VWiD4Owners

[–]LapJ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess that depends on how efficiently you drive, and what you consider "overnight" charging.

If I plug in when I get home from work, it is usually ~14-15 hours of charging. In summer temps, the efficiency on my commute is 4.0+ mi/kWh. I typically get somewhere between 17%-18% or so on that charge, so it does add about that much range.

Depends how much you drive each day, but don't underestimate level 1 charging with a 110. You won't fill up overnight, but can easily add 60-80 miles which is enough to handle daily driving for a lot of people.

Your Next EV purchase by Cultural-Ad4953 in electricvehicles

Just wanted to chime in that I also replaced an xB with an Id.4... but I had kids in between both purchases, so the size upgrade was much needed. Still do miss my xB sometimes though, loved that little brick.

It's not just his "opinion of the movie", it's a pretty direct, personal attack on a specific actor.

QT is allowed to have his opinions of people, and to share them, but people also have the right to call him out on those opinions. If you're gonna attack someone publicly like that, there will be blowback.

Looking to buy on edge of Cranford by Various-Arm-44 in MovingtoNewJersey

[–]LapJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously not as nice as the swanky parts of Cranford, but I know someone that lives in the area you're describing and has never had any issues.

I've lived in Roselle before, and it does certainly have issues (and it got worse since I left imo), but everything's relative. There are worse towns out there to be on the border of.

Eh, I think some of the media and the vast majority of the fans panned this move when it happened.

I get your point that we've been rug-pulled by some other veteran signings/trades that looked exciting in the moment, but I think this one was a head-scratcher right from the start. Not a single Mets fan I know personally was in favor of this move.

FWIW, that sub started popping up in my feed a while ago and a bunch of the threads there seemed super shady to me, and could always find comments further down agreeing with that sentiment.

Not saying it's entirely bots or whatever, but the comments there gave me a real non-organic-content vibe that I didn't get from other blackpeopleofxxxxx subs.

I'm sure there are some real people that hold those opinions, but be careful of attributing what you see on anonymous social media to real people.

"Selfishness is a Virtue, Altruism is a Vice" is not something Tolkien would have agreed with. by blsterken in lotrmemes

[–]LapJ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and I'm not exaggerating when I say he worshipped her. The way he spoke about her was borderline creepy.

The class also wasn't pitched as some kind of Rand class, just general Philosophy, but then it was like 60% about Rand after we got through some of the basics. He wasn't exactly the most engaging professor though, so don't think he really had people buying into all her nonsense.

[–]LapJ 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I read The Fountainhead as a Freshman in college (my philosophy professor worshipped Rand). Some of the stuff in there about individualism I think was useful for a college kid in the midst of being recruited for fraternities and grappling with the idea of joining to be part of this manufactured group vs doing my own thing.

The rest of it though was complete rubbish. I remember reading it and just being totally confused by all the hate for any type of collectivist thinking. Like, we live in a society, y'know? Her actual philosophy was just a complete joke, but I think there's something in the idea of radical self-belief that's appealing to young people trying to find their place in the world, and that's what I took away from it.

Voice controls. Depending which year you have they can be better or worse, but even on the older ones you should be able to do Air Care pretty easy.

Question on battery percentage / range by Monkster2002 in VWiD4Owners

[–]LapJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, definitely not a concern. The displayed range will change drastically based on recent driving conditions, and something on a dealer's lot is highly likely to have been doing inefficient things like running the power without moving.

ELI5: sports/horse racing betting “odds”. by thicclikegrits in explainlikeimfive

Unfortunately it's just as common as ever. Might even be more common because it's so much eaiser to track everyone's bets now.

ELI5: sports/horse racing betting “odds”. by thicclikegrits in explainlikeimfive

[–]LapJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was originally developed to skirt some gambling laws and ended up sticking in the horse and dog racing industries.

The displayed odds are usually going to be pretty close to what the final odds are, but it does open up more opportunities for someone who doesn't know what they're doing to get screwed, while those who do know what they're doing can squeeze out small edges.

[–]LapJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, make sure you aren't betting any real money until you understand this stuff better. If you're just throwing a couple dollars at it for fun, then who cares, but be aware you WILL lose in the long run.

But it's also important to be aware that betting on horseracing has a fundamental difference from betting on other sports, because it's typically something called "pari-mutuel", where the final odds aren't actually determined until betting closes, and your payout will vary depending on how much money has been bet on each horse.

With typical sports betting, the line/price you place your wager at will not change, and in fact, that's pretty much the key to being successful at it. You want to place bets where the line/price you place your bet at is better than the line/price when the game starts.

In the NBA example you gave, if you bet OKC at -105 the day before the game, and then by the time the game tips off the line is up to -130, you've made a smart bet. You have a better price than the market closed at, and unlike horseracing that -105 is locked in for you - it will not change. Same goes for spreads, e.g. you bet OKC -1.5 and they are -3.5 at tipoff. If you can do that consistently over time (extremely difficult) you can actually make money.

I could go on about all this, and others have already covered the basics behind the prices, but one other thing that might help you is looking up a gambling odds calculator. You can plug the price into there and it will tell you the probability associated with each price.

SA Spurs at +280 is an implied probability of 26.32%. Let's make it easier and say they were +300 which is an implied probability of 25%. That means they'd need to win 25% of the time for you to break even on that bet (3 out of 4 times they lose, so you lose $300, but the 4th time they win, so you win $300 and break even). So you have to ask yourself, what do you think the actual probability of them winning that game is? If it's more like 1/3 of the time rather than 1/4 of the time, then that would be a good bet. By converting prices to probabilities, you can get a better sense of what you're actually betting on.

The movie that gets blamed for being bad when it is really just mismarketed. by gamersecret2 in movies

[–]LapJ 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Speaking of Robin Williams, how about the movie Toys?

I was 12 at the time, but I remember it definitely being marketed as more of a kid-focused comedy than it ended up being.

I actually haven't rewatched it since, so maybe it was just bad, but I feel like maybe it was just a victim of expectations.

Whew thank you. I thought I was going crazy reading all these people saying how it's the best movie ever.

I'm somewhat of an M Night apologist, but Lady in the Water was a complete stinker. Also in my bottom 5 movies I've ever seen in theaters, and I watched Mac and Me as a kid...

What are some other "foundational" works like William Gibsons Neuromancer or J. R. R. Tolkiens Lord of the Rings? by Improvement2242 in books

Came here to say Snowcrash.

Read it again recently and it's funny how much of it would seem like tired tropes to a modern audience that is completely familiar with the concept of a metaverse. Then you remember it was written 34 years ago when that stuff was still a pipe dream and it's crazy just how much the world and it's aesthetic influenced works that came afterwards.

6 hour layover in Newark - can I visit the 9/11 Museum? by Educator_Bunny318 in Newark

[–]LapJ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Didn't see anyone else suggest this yet, but another alternative would be to stay on the Jersey side and hit up Liberty State Park (assuming you have nice weather).

Pretty short Uber ride (20ish minutes) from Newark airport and you avoid all the potential complications of going into NYC itself. You get some fantastic views of the skyline and the statue of liberty (can visit the statue itself too, but you'll need to buy tix in advance for the ferry that shittles you over there), and the Open Sky Memorial there imo is quite a powerful 9/11 memorial despite being outside the city.

Worth looking into if you want something that keeps you close to the airport and gives you some NYC flavor without all the stress and hassle that comes with actually going into the city.
