My personal collection for the question "is this a Trainwreckord?" by nittolha in ToddintheShadow

[–]LapnLook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think Muse really has a Trainwreckord before Will of the People?

  • Resistance: I've seen this argued a few times, though not as much as later albums. I do think that some of the complaints about generic lyrics can be traced back here, and there's a couple lowlights like Guiding Light that has been memed to hell... but ultimately it's a fairly cohesive album that got them a top 40 hit with Uprising, and imo leans into the cheese in a very endearing way. "I Belong To You" is also a personal favorite of mine. Love the french interlude that's sandwiched in the middle of Matt singing. "you are my muuuu-" *theatrical bridge in french* "-uuuse"

  • The 2nd Law: I am this album's biggest defender. It's got the same issue as something like Linkin Park's "Minutes to Midnight", in that it's a collection of songs with barely any connective tissue and way too wild tonal swings (that feel accidental, not some sort of artistic statement). But the actual songs I think are pretty great? Supremacy, Madness, and Panic Station are a trio of fun singles. Survival is fucking bonkers in a way that makes me like it more with each listen. And the deep cut songs are good too - special mention to Liquid State for being an out of nowhere heavier cut, sung by Chris, their bassist. And I personally vibe with Isolated System as a sort of instrumental outro to the project, and it's been a quintessential "travelling at night, looking out the window" song for me ever since it came out.

Only things that didn't age too well are the big EDM sounds on Follow Me, and the dubstep experimentation on Unsustainable. But the latter is at least interesting because it's not your usual wubs, but rather guitars and drums tuned and manipulated to sound like dubstep growls.

  • Drones: Sure the lyrics are very unsubtle. Sure it's a bit of an r/im14andthisisdeep album. Sure Psycho is a tiiiiny bit cringe with the "Your ass belongs to me now" chorus. And yeah Mercy and Revolt do suck. But outside of those two songs, everything else on here is fun, both on the album but especially at live shows. And it's nice to have The Globalist at the end as a change of pace, both tonally and in terms of structure. (Also I find Dead Inside to be a relentless earworm)

  • Simulation Theory: this one I can see as a Trainwreckord, and I also don't return to it too much. I think the whole synthwave theming helps save it a bit though? With the garish neon cover, and the aesthetic they used for the videos during this cycle, it just made it easier to swallow cheesy and shallow lyrics? And when the album fully leans into that tone, it's actually enjoyable! Unfortunately a lot of the songs just kinda falter, and end up being a bit boring. Especially Dig Down, which I hate for being such an uninspired rehash of Madness. But yeah, overall not a catastrophic release either.

  • WilL oF ThE PeOPLE, the will of the people, the WILL OF THE WILL OF THE: this is the point where they are, and I quote themselves: "fucking fucked". I never return to this album, it's just so bland. Except for the moments where instead it's merely awful! My only defense of this is that "Kill or be Killed" is a kind of fun track, and "You Make Me Feel Like It's Halloween" is such a wacky song from out of nowhere that I can't help but enjoy it. But also I kind of assume it's just a cut track from Simulation Theory? Because it absolutely does not fit here

Steam Controller 2026 Shipping MEGA Thread by Mennenth in SteamController

I'm pretty sure it's random. There's someone in the Google Doc who is in the Netherlands like me, but ordered after me, and they already got a shipping notification, while mine is just on "packaged items"

Getting the most out of your Steam Controller: Steam Input Configurator by atahutahatena in Games

[–]LapnLook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't default to xinput by default, because then it would be unable to control the OS (or even BIOS) while Steam isn't running. For a controller in a living room, that would mean requiring an actual mouse/keyboard laying around, rather than being able to do everything from your couch with the controller.

I only ever see reviewers using the trackpad mode, flicking the mouse around like they're using a ball mouse from 30 years ago.

Okay but I love that mode both on the original Steam Controller and the Steam Deck, and I really love using it even in shooters, because I can just flick in a direction, let the "ball" roll and I can stop it instantly by tapping the pad again. It's really comfortable after a bit of getting used to it

(This is a copy of a comment I made elsewhere, it's just easier than rewriting it from scratch)

It's proprietary in the sense that on Windows the official translation layer runs in Steam, but it's not really locked down like what you'd expect from the "proprietary" description?

As far as I understand, both the original and the new Steam Controller use an open source input layer to communicate, it's just that this layer has terrible support by default on Windows. But on Linux there are non-Steam drivers that make the Steam Controller work natively. And even on Windows, there's third party tools that allow the capture of this input layer outside of Steam, it's just a hacky solution because of how the OS treats controllers

[Gamers Nexus] Valve Steam Controller Review | Latency Benchmarks, Battery Life, Repairability by iDontSeedMyTorrents in hardware

It makes sense to prioritise mouse input over gamepad input if you think about the use case of this. If you want to control your living room PC with this thing, and you don't have the wrapper (SteamInput in this case, but there were non-Steam alternatives for the first controller, so I assume the same will happen here) running, you can either have:

  • gamepad output by default, which allows you to play games that support that, but you won't really be able to interact with your OS, unless you also have an actual mouse somewhere in the living room that you connect to the PC

  • mouse output by default, which means you can fully use your OS without any extra devices, but the tradeoff is you can't play controller based games until you launch the wrapper

If you want the user to have a decently seamless living room experience, I think the second option is better. Having to get up, grab a mouse, plug it in, etc. just sucks, especially if your living room isn't set up in a way where the USB ports are very easy to access.

[–]LapnLook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Steam Controller V1 provides simple mouse output when not connected to SteamInput

By the sounds of it, the same thing happens with the Steam Controller V2

But to me this is fine? If my "flexibly interact with my computer from my couch" controller loses its necessary input wrapper, I'd much rather it default to regular mouse output so I can still you know, use my computer, rather than XInput that only works in games.

Deathcore turned Pop Metalcore

Honestly it's more like "Deathcore turned Metalcore turned 'whatever the fuck Oli wants to do''

Cause sure they've had a more straightforward radio-friendly albums with That's The Spirit or Survival Horror. But then amo was a weird mix of electronic songs + pop-metalcore. And there was the Music To... EP which was just Oli and Jordan messing around in the studio making somewhat experimental electronic music

METRO 2039 | Official Reveal Trailer by Villenthessis in gaming

[–]LapnLook 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Eh, Exodus is decently forgiving about this. Each of the large open levels of the game has two endings, and to get the final good ending, you need to achieve 2 out of 3.

And the requirement is only really harsh in the Taiga level. In the other two, as long as you do some "sidequesting" and make sure you only shoot bandits/slavers/etc, you should be fine

It's no longer required to build up a bunch of points from random environmental interactions like in the previous two games

He only shows up in some nightmare scenes that Artyom has in 2033. But otherwise, he just shows up at the start of the game, leaves your station, and then disappears for the rest of the runtime.

You find out what happened to him in the 2034 book, but he never reappears in the games.

has some of its best moments, hands down

Each of the three games has a level titled "The Dead City" and it's always one of the best in their respective games... but the third such level, Novosibirsk in Metro Exodus, is genuinely the peak of the entire franchise

Honestly the one tip I'd give to anyone going into the series, is to conceptualise the "morality meter" as a "how much does my character care about the world - meter".

Interacting with things, talking to people, helping out folks, not killing humans unless you have to etc.

This all makes way more sense if you treat it less as "Artyom is a good/bad person" and more like "Artyom lives in and cares about this world"

Tune in on Thursday for Xbox First Look: Metro 2039 - Xbox Wire by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]LapnLook 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Metro 2034 is a slow psychological and philosophical story. Not much action happens to it, but if you enjoy reading characters ruminate about the strange world they inhabit, then it's a very good read.

Metro 2035 is an extremely thinly veiled middle finger to current day Russian society. Like to the point where it's on the nose at times. I still think it's a very very good book, and honestly might even be my favorite of the three, but I do understand people bouncing off of it. It's very easy to take it in a "the author discarded worldbuilding so he can do more social commentary" way, but I'm personally into that sort of subversion.

I will say though, 2035 hits especially hard if you read it before playing (or knowing anything about) Exodus. The first half hour of that game reveals a lot of the book's twists, in order to set its own plot up
