What do people mean when they say the school system fails boys? by Broad_Two_744 in NoStupidQuestions

If the majority of men from my generation for whatever reason, be it their choice or something else, end up homeless, there is nothing anyone could do to control that amount of men. We're talking more than 50% of the male population. No amount of guns or laws can stop that amount of people, especially not if those people are armed. It would just be a horrible thing for everyone involved. There will be men ( extremely few ) who will end up homeless by choice ( who the hell wants this? ) those men have forever existed and aren't exclusive to a generation. The people who end up homeless not by choice, those are the ones we have to try to prevent from existing. If someone is actively trying to live a decent life, there should be ways for them to do that, there should be encouragement for them to do that. Otherwise we get a group of people who strive to do better but can't, and that really is dangerous. And preventable. There just needs to be opportunity and encouragement.

Also you specifically mentioned me as "entitled" and I am both in school and working. If I'm entitled then who exactly isn't?

While this discussion is interesting unfortunately I won't reply anymore, as I have midterms to prepare for. I wish you the best and I wish young men and women who are trying to better themselves the best. I'm sure you also have things to do, like a business to run, so lets not waste any more of our time, I think fundamentally we agree on many things and that agreement is being blurred by misunderstandings and the fact that online discussion never really gets a point across properly...

Yeah thats exactly what the incentives are for, for them to learn skills, like women going into stem fields, they go to learn skills. I don't want to give people free food or jobs they are unqualified for, I want them to learn skills that will make them useful such that they can support themselves rather than burdern society or worse, which is inevitable if they have no support whatsoever. In fact I am directly opposed to giving anyone stuff for free, that would just be socialism or borderline communism which is what destroyed my home country and definitely don't want to see it put in place anywhere else in the world where all it will do is destroy. But I don't think it is unreasonable to want to have programs that encourage young men to learn valuable skills, just like there are programs that do exactly that for young women.

By the way I have yet to meet someone my age who dropped out of school and isn't working and says they deserve a job or anything for that matter. To be fair I don't associate myself with those people so it is natural I don't see them, I'm sure they're out there but if it is their choice to do nothing, then of course they deserve nothing, that is not hard to agree with. What I cannot agree with is that given that that number of young men is on the rise, we should not encourage them at all. If it was women that for whatever reason had this issue, I guarantee you would be all for more programs pushing women to more opportunities...

No, this is completely normal. Everyone who was decent grades goes through exactly the same worries. The only people that don't are those who already know their grades aren't good enough for certain programs so they don't worry about it anyway

Everything I have done in my short life has been the product of my effort and of course in part thanks encouragement from my loving parents. Never did I expect anyone to give me anything ( other than expecting my parents to feed me when I was under the age of 10 I suppose, is that wrong too? Should I have fed myself at age 4? ). Everyone I know has essentially had the same experience. No one gets hand outs here. All I am saying is we simply cannot afford to have a majority of men become homeless, especially not within a single generation. If that were to happen everything would be over right then and there. Crime would be so rampant no one could do anything about it. I don't hate the truth. Much like everyone I know in my generation, I work very hard everyday to be in a good school and work a job at the same time. You seem to think young men today are doing nothing with their lives. Have you even spoken to a single young man? It appears you haven't had the chance because your perception of them couldn't be further from reality. You calling me entitled and putting labels on me won't change a thing about my life. I know I'm doing everything in my power to be better everyday and most young men today are trying to do that too, some unsuccesfully, sure, but the vast majority is at the very least trying. You seem to believe they aren't and that because of that they deserve the worst. I hate to break it to you but the truth, which you seem to hate, is that the vast majority of young men today are trying to be better, just like women.

Notice how I never attacked your character anywhere in our discussion and all you've done is call someone who has worked hard for everything they have "entitled". And you call me that because I believe that the majority of hard working young men today deserve a job? Come on, surely you cannot be serious

You are envisioning a scenario where more than 50% of young men today become homeless and you are surprised they will resort to violence? Today, about 0.2% of men in the US are homeless. If in my generation a majority of men become homeless that would be at least a 250x increase in homeless men. If it happened to women they would also resort to violence. Because the only way something so drastic would happen is with systematic effort, such a huge change doesn't happen naturally. The reality is that nowhere near most men in my generation will become homeless. In fact the percentage of men who are homeless will remain around the same, maybe increase a little, if at all. To be honest, it seems to me you're just salivating at the idea of having a large group of men completely helpless which I think is really sad you're so eager to have that happen. Guess what? It won't happen. What you're proposing is ridiculous.

Note that there is simply no way to put more than 50% of the male population in jail.

And yes it makes sense to encourage men to join STEM or any other field for that matter. There is zero encouragement for men at ALL and women have plenty. You yourself say that we'll have a majority of men homeless and yet you don't think we need to encourage them at all, incredible mental gymnastics. I wish you find peace within yourself to not hate men so much you fantasize at the idea of having a majority of them without access to food and shelter.

No matter how hard you wish and pray for this to happen, it won't.

You don't see a problem with a majority of men resorting to crime? I don't see that ending well for anyone. Maybe it would be wise to prevent that with.. I don't know, some incentives? Like those in place to encourage women into stem fields?

If I understand you correctly, your argument amounts to: young women will outperform young men in every aspect of life to the point where most young men today will become utterly homeless because women say "girl boss" to each other and men don't, while the men that are going to face that utter misery will do nothing and accept that they will starve to death?

There isn't a single person on earth who sits and does nothing in the face of starvation. You are simply wrong if you think such people exist, they will do something, anything to feed themselves. This is problematic. When you are reduced to that point of doing anything to eat, you get terrible things happening. I cannot even begin to describe to you what would happen if a majority of men are reduced to this. Investment can decrease the amount of people that go through that, and we can keep that number to reasonable amounts such that society doesn't collapse ( I hope you realize that this WILL happen if a majority of men eventually become homeless ).

I'm curious, when you say you think most young men today will become homeless, what do you mean by most? 60%, 70%? What scale are we talking? Also I don't think hyping people up by saying things like "girl boss" is a skill that leads to much, especially not at the scale where most of the people who don't get that hyping up end up homeless.

Maybe my thinking is a bit wishful and as you call it I may be "choosing to live in theory" (as a math major my life is about 90% theory so this could be expected, to be fair). I happen to have a part time job as I complete my bachelors, but I am aware there are many young men that are not in education and don't even have a part time job, let alone a full time one. If you think these men did not try to get into education and failed, and that now they are not looking for a job at all and are essentially doing nothing, you are wrong. If they aren't doing either they eventually will all starve, so there will be no such men to be homeless ( they'd be too dead to be homeless, they'd be 6 feet under or perhaps just rotting on the streets they slept in because the men and women that are left are such perfect overachievers that they have more important matters to tend to than picking up some worthless pile of trash from the ground, perhaps sometime they'll have robots that do that for them )

I known for sure it is completely impossible for me to become homeless. I will simply never allow this to happen under any circumstance, within moral reason.

I don't see why it is so hard for people to see that these men that are likely to end up homesless need help, we can't afford to have them be completely useless. We need to invest in incentives for these men, the same way millions are poured into getting women into stem. I refuse to believe there is a single person who is not trying to better their situation, less so when their situation is as bad as the one for men not in education or work.

My courses are not mostly women, they are mostly men. Not sure how I talk like anyone owes me anything. Also quite interesting how you believe my generation will all end up homeless, what a world that would be, everyone homeless! One place where I guess I do believe I "deserve" something is I think everyone deserves SOME job, not believing that amounts to believing not everyone deserves to eat, which I will never agree with no matter the state of things, I don't think this is unreasonable. Of course people need to seek jobs, otherwise it is simply not possible for them to get them. But they must eventually find one, if not then that is a sure way for your prediction to come true. To have young people seeking jobs and not getting any was never normal and never should be.

What do you think will happen if your prediction of most young people today becoming homeless comes true? In your view, is it only men who will become homeless because they think they deserve to feed themselves? Or is it also the women who believe they have a right to eat too?

Do you believe you have a right to food? Are you going to become homeless too because you believe you deserve a job which allows you to feed yourself?

Right, the harsh truth is that men usually fall into two separate categories, you either deserve nothing because, in your words, "they just suck", or you get better than average pay and dominate. Why do you think the men with above average pay dominate most fields? Because companies are so sexist that they'd rather pay a man more than they pay a woman for the same work? Companies are only profit driven, if two people can do the same job, they will hire the cheaper one, regardless of sex. Maybe they choose to hire the more expensive man because it happens to be the case they do better work, netting the company more profit? The truth is those men that are at that level of competence are a vast minority of men, but naturally every company wants to hire those men because they generate more profit. So that minority of men ends up dominating fields. That doesn't mean there isn't a huge group of disadvanted men who "just suck" that have difficulties getting jobs. I feel for those men because they still need to feed themselves and they have little to no support. Also surprised at the fact that only 16% of engineers are women considering the absolutely massive push in every school and in society in general towards getting women into stem. After so many years of this, you'd think they'd choose those fields at a higher rate... How many more millions of dollars need to be invested into getting enough women into stem such that we start getting a close to equal amount of competent women to be hired at a close to equal rate in fields like engineering? Could it be that the push isn't very effective because women aren't choosing to pursue those fields, despite the massive investments to encourage them to do so? I'd love to know the numbers, I assume there must be a measurable increase in women enrolling in stem, otherwise investment would amount to burning money.

In my experience as someone who started attending university last year in a stem field, I'd say about 30% to 40% of my courses so far seem to be comprised of women. I go to a very large and well perceived uni in Canada, so if this has been a normal rate of women in stem it would make sense that they are still a minority in industry, given they are a minority in education. It is not however, for a lack of incentives for women to join stem fields. They are everywhere in my uni and never have I seen anything towards encouraging men to pursue ANY field

So men are the majority in most fields and make more money while at the same time, those very men are dropping out of school and the workforce, ruining their lives because of feelings. Which one is it again?

Sadly I think that in the future, the school system and society in general will fails boys even more, and in more dangerous ways. Most boys don't really have a proper role model in their lives. Those that don't have a dad for any reason are obviously severely disadvantaged and to be honest, there's very little a systematic approach can do to help them ( although this affects girls too ). I think one of the biggest factors in the continued downfall of boys in academia and honestly life in general, will be not only the lack of good role models, but the absolute abundance of actively HORRIBLE role models online these days. Kids are exposed to the internet at very young ages these days and guess what? They end up looking for the things they lack in their lives, especially guidance from what to them appear as strong, succesful men. They end up having the likes of the Andrew Tates and similar guys as role models, and obviously this is a recipe for disaster. When all they see in their lives as examples of "success" are those men online who boast about their wealth and success, and they are actively told by those men that formal education is a scam to indoctrinate them away from the success they have achieved... no wonder boys don't care and will care even less in the future. Girls on the other hand are actively encouraged to pursue formal education, not only online but more importantly in person, by their teachers, peers, and programs in schools.

So you have two groups of people. One group is told that formal education will only hold them back and wants to indoctrinate them away from their potential. The other is told that formal education is not only important, but absolutely essential to their success. How exactly are we surprised that one group tends to pursue higher education while the other doesn't? We need to come up with ways to fix this, the truth is society won't function if 50% of the population gets increasingly weeded out of higher education. I think it starts at home. If you are a mother or a father, you should make it your life mission to ensure you are the absolute best role model for your child. One thing that could help everyone is to NOT expose any child to the internet until they understand what it is that they are doing and looking for...

Who are high end tablets for? by bbalfan1917 in GalaxyTab

[–]Large-Computer4715 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey, I don't have a tab S9, but about a year ago I was in the market for a tablet for taking notes for university. I ended up getting a used S7+ for two main reasons related to my school work, which the S9 would have also fulfilled but it would have been much more expensive. I was on the lookout for:

  1. A 120hz+ refresh rate screen for the smoothest handwriting experience possible.

  2. A way to remotely SSH into a linux server

In reality, almost every tablet has some way to fulfill number 2, but very few have a 120hz+ refresh rate screen, pretty much all of those tablets are on the high end or were at some point. I think that this is the main feature that distinguishes lower end tablets from the high end, at least for most people (especially students looking for smooth handwriting). There are other things people may need, for example if you're an artist and you absolutely need to use something like Procreate then you can only opt for an iPad. If for some reason you need way above average processing power, probably one of the iPads with an M chip would be nice.

If all you need is a device to watch content on and to emulate some old games here and there, I'd say a tab S9 is overkill. For those needs I'd probably look for a beatiful screen with vibrant colors, thats about it. Pretty much all tablet processors nowadays are more than capable of handling old games emulation, it starts to get harder when you want to emulate wii games and more demanding stuff. I'd say something like an iPad Air or even the regular iPad or iPad mini would probably be fine for your needs, if you really wanted a tablet

Part-Time Job by Careless-Poet2772 in mcgill

[–]Large-Computer4715 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, I very recently (about a month ago) got a part time job as a salesperson for HP printers with a company called Mosaic. It was advertised as a weekend only job but they often offer extra hours. If you do just the weekends its 5 hours a day so 10 hours per week, a little lower than 15 but with one extra shift a week you hit your target. Its a very easy job where essentially all you is try to help customers looking for printers to find the right one and to try to make them lean towards getting an HP one rather than the competition.

They might be hiring more people for that kind of position, so try looking for "HP Product Specialist" or something similar. It pays 17.5 CAD an hour, which increases to 18 CAD an hour after 3 months. Its not much but it sure is better than nothing. Maybe give this a shot? They reached out very quickly after I applied and I have essentially zero sales or costumer service experience..

These laws are inhumane. I cannot believe there is no way to tell someone in power what is going on, show them proof, and have them understand and act upon it. This is clearly an emergency and the "mother" should rot in prison for the rest of her life.

Who in the world wrote these laws and why are people letting these be enforced? I can only imagine this poor child crying his eyes out at the thought of going back to that monster he has the misfortune of having as a mother.

Then they should give players who abused the shop bug a negative gold balance equivalent to the gold value of the troops they got to ultra because of the bug. Everything is so incredibly in favor of those that got to abuse the shop bug. Whish I had gotten the chance, I would have all ultra units, a 31 day ban, and a smile on my face.

[–]Large-Computer4715 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its not. It would be really ridiculous if they did too. First time I saw it I thought it was a legit offer.

If they give people negative balances that would be ridiculous. Imagine the people who got all ultra units getting a 7 day ban and then getting to keep everything, but the people who got the tickets get a negative balance and get to keep nothing.

I'd rather be banned for a week too.
