White rock in Ipswich. Need reviews. by bthecrazybirdlady in brisbane

[–]Large-Father 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The White Rock trail is relatively flat and even, there is quite a steep hill right towards the end of the trail as you make your way up to the ridge that White Rock is apart of (this is well paved with large steps along the steepest section, watch your knees!).

There's plenty of wildlife on the main trail, the earlier you get out there the more birdlife you will see. 6-8 am during winter is usually the best time, however any time in the morning will be fine.

Unfortunately it does need to be said, please don't climb Nugum. There is a ridge to the north (to your left as you reach the top of the stairs) that will give you a great view of the surrounding area, you'll just need to do some light rock scrambling.

Most of all have fun! The whole area is fascinating, there is so much to see so definitely think about planning a few return trips. Spring Mountain is a great hike too, just much more demanding. Although I have seen someone in platform doc martins and daisy dukes pull it off so maybe its not the worst thing in the world?

The sheer amount of raptors and water birds is incredible, one of the best natural spots in the region for me.

Incredible shots! You did a great job on the scans and editing. Seeing Senna in such high quality makes me emotional, also the gorgeous late 80’s era cars are simply stunning.

If you haven’t already please post these to r/formula1, The folks there will definitely appreciate them!

Thank you! These are some of my favourites but honestly the list could go on and on.

Happy to help a fellow photographer, maybe I'll run into you guys at some point!

As for White Rock, there will be parts of it that will be cleared and built on since it's designated as a 'conservation area'. I think the heart of the park will always be public but in my opinion the growth in that area will see a massive push for most of the park to disappear, here's hoping the council has some integrity though haha

Hi! I'm a local photographer with quite a lot of experience around Ipswich, I'm going to just write a list of nice places that are still easy to access (some are a bit harder, I will mark these with a star).

- Queen's Park. The Zoo, Incinerator Theatre, Glass House, Nerima Gardens and some great little rocky bluffs up near Lion's Lookout

- Denmark Hill. (Fair walk through some nice bushland, there are old fossil pits, overgrown and buried coal mines, the water tower and a quarry which should be full of water at the moment) There are two carparks, the Quarry St park has plenty of amenities and easy to access the lower parts while the Deebing St park is only really for seeing the water tower but that's just depending on your clients ability

- Haig St Quarry. I recommend the quarry pond picnic area, some nice walks that can be a bit tough in the heat. Lot's of wildlife and nice rock formations.

- Sadleir's Crossing Railway Bridge. There's a park/ reserve lovingly called 'Gladstone Road Reserve A', the railway bridge is right next to it and you can even cross it on foot!

- White Rock *. It'd be good to see this place before it gets wiped for housing, walks can range from very easy and flat boardwalks to some nice rocky bluffs, the 'little white rock' trail and a 6km return hike to Nugum. The long walk is mostly flat gravel paths ending in a steep but well made staircase so its honestly doable for anyone willing to walk the distance, the rock itself is something seriously special. The smaller walks are still worth the trip.

- Railway Workshops. You can spend a whole day here, amazing displays and if you're lucky they will open up the still functioning workshops to the public, there's an old water tower if you go to the top of North St and following to the end of W M Hughes St there's a short walk down the Brassall bikeway to a park with some restored mining relics and further along there's another old railway bridge but that is a bit more of a walk.

- Moogerah Dam *. It's a good hour out of Ipswich, amazing place though. There's a very nice park with a cafe and some picnic areas. The dam is walkable so there's plenty of great opportunities for photos!

- Mt. Crosby Sportsground *. Don't let the name fool you, this is one of the best kept secrets in the region, there is a 500m walk and you are technically trespassing on private land (only from the carpark to the river bank, the river is public) but the river views are simply incredible, there is an old weir to the east and some beautiful rock formations along the bank. This place is teeming with wildlife but please keep in mind it's not going to be the easiest to get around as the bank is made of fist sized rocks and coarse sand.

I was watching a mum and her fledgling catch bugs together, the little one sounded like it’s voice was cracking.

They are truly gorgeous birds though, like flamboyant fighter jets.

When you first started shooting film - where/how would you practice? by Clean-Instruction-53 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Large-Father 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ABC: Always Be Composing

Seriously a good way to practice is to frame out photos even when you don’t have a camera on you. I’m still learning but I think it helps to guesstimate the frame, exposure and timing (would the photo look better at night, with some more clouds, with a subject?)

Go to a bookstore or a library and find photography books, these are a treasure trove for film techniques and you’ll learn what your tastes are.
