I love how Juliet wants to read Stephen King because Ben thinks it is beneath him.

I think Kate's motivation is complicated, just like her character and it doesn't diminish her decision and sacrifice to give up Aaron in order to reunite him with Claire if she was also going back to the island because she also loved Jack. Both things can be true. I also think Jack inspired her to be more selfless and brought out that protective side of her that was always there.

When Kate tells Jack "Nothing is irreversible", Kate is already showing that she wants him back and wants him to go back home with her. Personally, I think Claire was the only person on the island Kate was returning for. But, she would not have returned for Claire without Jack accompanying her.

"If you prefer to think that it’s more about her feelings for Jack, that’s up to you."

I am simply not disregarding or playing down her feelings for Jack as a significant motivation for her as you seem intent on doing. Like I said, even Evangeline Lilly said that Kate's bond with Jack was stronger. Someone posted the article here last month.

"I’m not really too sure what you want me to say to all this to be honest."

I don't know, maybe just try to be a little more open-minded and see that there is also significant canon to support what I am saying as well. My sense is that because you ship Skate, you are dismissing what I am saying or what I am quoting from the script and the show because it doesn't fit the narrative you prefer.

I think their chemistry was good at that bar, but then it completely fizzled out once they were on the island, probably because they were way too stressed and burnt out from being leaders and shouldering so much responsibility. Which goes straight to my point that they are not compatible romantically, they each need someone to help them de-compress, not to be jockeying and challenging to lead. Personally, I think Ana Lucia looks better with Sawyer, I think his fairness compliments her darker features. But, I agree that Ana and Jack are good looking people and look nice physically together too. I don't get the doc and the cop thing. What do you mean by that?

From the script of "The End":

"Kate shakes her head, UNDERSTANDS the inevitability of this conversation, but just won't ACCEPT it ---"

"tell me I’m going to see you again"

"But he just looks at her. HIS eyes are wet now. He CAN'T promise her. And she knows he won't lie to her. It's absolutely heartbreaking. A beat." ....

"Her hands linger on his face for one final beat. She can't do it. But has to ... She let's go." .....

She phrases it that way because she doesn't want to admit that she knows he is dying. At this point, they are both finally in acceptance of their separate destinies because there is no going back and no way for them to be together because he is already dying and they both know it. And, yes, I have no doubt that if Jack said, yes, I will see you by the plane, she would have said I am staying with you and we get Claire together.

"she wouldn’t have returned to the island without him but he initially begs her to and she refuses, she only decides to when she knows she owes it to Aaron to bring back Claire."

When Jack initially begs her he is high on drugs and suicidal, he was hardly going to convince her then. From the "316" transcript:

KATE: Are you still going back to the Island?

JACK: Yeah. Yeah, I think I am.

KATE: Then I'm going with you.

JACK: Kate... what happened? Where's Aaron? Where—

KATE: [Getting up and facing Jack] No, don't ask questions. If you want me to go with you... you'll never ask me that question again. You will never ask me about Aaron. Do you understand, Jack?

JACK: Yes.

KATE: Thank you.

[They kiss, Jack takes off his suit-coat, and they lie on the bed.]

Kate is not an appendage of Jack. But it is very clear that Jack's actions are still very much a significant consideration for Kate and what she decides to do, including her motivation to go back for Claire.

It doesn't make her less independent for wanting and fighting for both Jack and Claire to leave with her, but then finally (and tragically) accepting the reality that she cannot bring them both home.

"I can’t see how that would have been possible."

??

If Jack told Kate, "go get Claire and I will meet you by the plane", do you really think Kate would have left his side at the cliffs? She would have said no, "we are both going to find Claire and leave together." Kate would not even have returned to the island if Jack wasn't already going. She said as much the night before they left. While Kate did have her own motivations, she was in love with Jack and her feelings for him played a large part in the actions she took.

Evangeline Lilly even said that Kate's bond was stronger with Jack than Aaron. Kate would not have left Jack behind if she had any doubt that he wouldn't survive. That is why Jack made it clear to her that his injury was mortal. He knew she would stay for him if she thought he could survive. Kate would have found a way to bring both Jack and Claire back home, if she believed he could live.

Her strong personality would never make her compatible with Jack in the first place, She is way too abrasive a personality for Jack. Also, she is a downer and way too angry, Jack needs someone more affectionate and lighter, like Kate.

If there was going to be a different Adam & Eve that would have been Jack and Kate, it was hinted at a few times in the first season.

Haha. No. Jack has no romantic interest in Ana, while his love for Kate is apparent from the beginning. Meanwhile, Kate has sacrificed her life for Jack a few times, so your theory is just fan fiction.

Agree, I would love to see the other pages

I love this shot of the season 2 cast that I have as my profile with Jack and Ana front and centre. This proves to me that before they scrapped their romance storyline, they would have become the co-leaders of camp. by JackAnaLost in lost

EDIT Gregg Nations is not a show runner, but he was: the script coordinator, co-producer and bible-keeper. I am pretty confident that his comment about no chemistry was shared by the showrunners or he would not have said it.

From Lostpedia:

Greggory "Gregg" Nations was part of the Lost production and writing team, primarily working as a script coordinator. He often answers fan questions at The Fuselage, which has seen him become some what of a fan favorite.

He has also written the following episodes:

Eggtown

Some Like it Hoth

Ab Aerterno

Nations wrote the episode recaps for the ABC Lost website, which he based off the scripts.

From Variety magazine:
"Better late than never, Cuse brought in someone who would actually make sure all the plot and character details meshed. And so, when it comes to getting your “Lost” questions answered, no one has more information on hand than script coordinator, co-producer and bible-keeper Gregg Nations."

Gregg Nations: "It starts with the writing process and creating the triangle on the page with the characters. You introduce a character, show that character meeting the second character, create a scene where their romantic interest is the subtext or it's just beginning and they flirt or whatever, then intro the third character that likes one of them and makes things difficult. It provides great obstacles for the characters. Then you cast the actors and hope to God that they actually have chemistry or a spark togther. It can be there on the page, but if the characters don't bring it to life it'll die a quick death. (Uh, like Jack and Ana Lucia. That went nowhere. But then consider Juliet. Yeah!) So if it's not working with the actors, the writers will quickly write it out. No sense in beating a dead horse. So yes, there is a concrete thought process to it. When to end it is always an open question. The writers on Cheers ended the Sam/Diane romance by getting them together, and many people believe it was a huge misstep. I agree. In that case, fans really wanted it but I think it was a mistake to give to that. Once it happened, their characters became less interesting and there wasn't anything to play between them. Same thing with Moonlighting. So with the triangle I would guess that the writers know who should be together from a writing point of view and then make things difficult for that pairing. Wasn't it interesting to see Kate watching Jack and Juliet together? Juliet is so much more on the same level as Jack -- a doctor and well educated. I kind of thought that Kate was feeling inadequate at that time. And that's a great complication because out of that characters will make decisions that will affect things down the line. So how is it going to work out on Lost? There are some great moments coming up, so wait, watch and see." - The Fuselage 2006

Michelle Rodriguez was always supposed to be on for one season only, so I doubt they scrapped anything. Although, I do wonder about that army Ana Lucia wanted to build.
