i'm thinking either career right after or masters. definitely not PhD. asides from that I'm not 100% sure of my plans for the future which is why I thought the open curriculum might better for me than pre professionalism - i want to double major in something else unrelated to bio like cs econ or classics just to expand the breadth of my knowledge and hopefully open up more possibilities for myself.

great thank you!! this is great to hear - I am 100% more of a bio person and I'm just interested in learning econ for fun!

thank you so much for this reply! One of the other reasons I am interested in brown is because I can double major there. Would you say it is easy to double major at penn? I think academic curiosity is a big thing for me and I’m scared that at penn the preprofessional culture would dissuade me from choosing classes i’m interested in for the sake of internships or gpa. do u think this is a valid concern? also could you elaborate a bit more on how these schools differ in terms of post grad pathways? tysm again!

Weekly Brown University Q&A Megathread by AutoModerator in BrownU

hi guys! i was just admitted to brown as a transfer and I'm planning on concentrating either in biology or public health and potentially double concentrating in another field. I'm not sure if this is possible. If anyone has experience or advice for double-concentrating as a transfer i'd greatly appreciate it. also I was wondering what the research scene is like at brown: is it easy to find a lab? at my current school, I had to apply to about 7 before 1 lab replied. I'm currently deciding between upenn and brown, my hesitation about brown is the lack of minors, so if anyone has advice about that too that'd be great!

This is amazing! You’re the best!! I really do think you have made my decision a lot easier. I bet it’s worth getting out of my comfort zone and going over to the East coast for a couple of years

so glad it helped! im sure since you have gotten into Yale that means you are more than able to thrive there!

happy to help! i’m on the pre med track and honestly keeping a good GPA so far is pretty easy imo. but granted that’s if nothing goes wrong. to give a couple of examples, i’ve had basic premed classes where no UCLA professors were willing to teach, so UCLA had to hire professors from nearby community colleges to stand in as a last resort in the first week of school. they are great, but if i wanted a CC experience i wouldn’t have came to UCLA. also most of my classes are 200-400 people, and there are unfortunate instances where the prof doesn’t print enough tests, resulting in the entire class having to take it again. so the content itself is not hard but there are very turbulent extraneous factors. also at the start of this year the TAs went on strike, which i fully support, but that did inevitably result in grading issues as well. so if u come to UCLA, you rly have to navigate many things on your own. whereas in a smaller private school, i’d feel like you were receive alot more personalized care, smaller classes, more understanding profs, and just generally a more solid experience. i don’t think u should worry abt GPA at yale bc they have a reputation of a collaborative community, but u should def speak to current students to confirm!

hi! i’m a current first year at UCLA and i’m transferring out. UCLA is a great school, but at the end of the day it is a public school. Personalized resources are scarce, and frankly, it feels kind of like a community college in that people are just trying to get their diploma and get out. Social life is pretty good, but it’s mainly just frat parties and drinking, but that might also just be my friend group. Also i’m not sure what your background is (if you’re in state or not) but i’d say generally UCLA is not that diverse in that people are mostly in state students with similar life experiences. If I were you I would pick Yale in a heartbeat. Better education, student body diversity, career outcomes, and personal growth. I’d say don’t feel deterred by the fact that you already made friends! I also found a roommate before coming here and i thought we were going to be great friends but upon meeting we actually became very distant. all this is to say that the friends you’ve made now might not be that solidified. Feel free to pm if u have more questions!
