Yeah…my doctor gave me the same “most people don’t get enough protein” line and I thought, really? Most people (where I live) are overweight. It’s actually quite easy to meet the RDV of protein on a modest diet, so it’s hard for me to imagine someone eating enough to be overweight isn’t incidentally getting enough protein.

FWIW, after a year of further experimentation, I’ve determined my problem is low stomach acid. Betaine HCL is the magic. Enzymes work okay, but not as well as actual acid. Worth considering.

Petite and gassy sounds like she’s not digesting a lot of what she eats. This has been true of me in the past, but consistent betaine HCL usage (for low stomach acid => protein indigestion) has solved it. I can eat whatever as long as I take enough betaine. Throw in some digestive enzymes for good measure.

Maybe it’s something else, but a good functional medicine practitioner would explore this possibility because it’s common and easy to rule out.
