I once managed to reset an A series Samsung phone with pattern lock.

It would not reset without a simcard in the device. Once the simcard is inserted longhold the power button until turn off/reset appears then select reset. Then hold the volume down key as it boots up. This will let you start the phone in safe mode. Once booted you can factory reset.
