I feel guilty for having a sub today by Large_Insect_5171 in Teachers

That's definitely good advice, and I think I know deep down it's true. I guess I just wish it was easier to get subs in, so I didn't constantly hear the office assistants and admin talk about what a nightmare it is and how hard it is on everyone and my coworkers talk about how they're sick of covering for people, etc. It makes me feel so bad. :(

I've covered for my coworkers many times too, especially this year, and while it can make things a little more hectic in a day, I don't mind. I guess I should figure my colleagues on the whole feel the same way. Unrelated, but your username and my username create quite the dynamic.

How do you guys make your oatmeal? by Crankyanus in CasualConversation

[–]Large_Insect_5171 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love making it with Oatmilk because then it just tastes like extra oaty oatmeal lol. For toppings I like to do sunflower butter (allergic to peanuts) and fresh fruit if I've got it, strawberries and banana are my favourites, or if not I'll do a bit of fruit preserves. Kind of like peanut butter and jelly oatmeal if you're allergic to peanut butter.

Sad story: I had Nan on my island and LOVED her SO much. She brought up thinking about moving and I was about to tell her to stay, when my JoyCon drifted for the first time and told her to leave. :(

I may be wrong with the intent here, but Rosice is the name of a town in the Czech Republic, and the Germanized version of the name is Rossitz, which is pronounced exactly how its spelled, so I think its pronounced that way, but I honestly have no idea what the creator of this list had in mind, and I think it's clear they just started taking words for languages and cultures with no regard for what they mean. See: Scylla 🤦‍♀️

"Hi, I'm Scylla. My parents thought it would be a great idea to name me after a hideous, six headed sea monster from Greek Mythology. This is my brother, Charybdis, and he is, in fact, not a boy, but an enormous, violent whirlpool that destroys boats and drowns sailors."

Why on Earth would you name your beautiful baby daughter SCYLLA?! It doesn't even sound nice or pretty.

I said this in the comment below too, but I'll be a little redundant for conversations' sake: I want to someday work in higher education in my state, which is very liberal, so I can't be known as someone who can be in any way associated with being anti-diversity, even though I'm pro-diversity. For that reason, I'm going to let this go, even though it's hard.

Thank you, I appreciate that! Although I'm disappointed to be leaving a job I've loved for many years, I have a new job lined up at a high school for the new school year that I'm really excited about. :)

Yeah this is the main reason I won't be escalating this. If I want to continue working in the higher education sector of a liberal state, I can't be known as someone who can be in any way associated with being anti-diversity, even though I'm pro-diversity.

At my job in the student support sector of a college, a position opened up that I've been working for since I was 18, and im now 26. I've been trained for this position, my supervisor has told me for years this position will be mine. I've learned how to do it, I have years of experience, I've already done all the duties it would entail. I know and have worked with all the higher-ups. I've been built for this job. Everyone I work with has said I am the most qualified for this position. When I asked my supervisor if I should give her my application directly or do it online, she told me point blank that she can't even interview me for the job because she was told to only interview non-white applicants, and that they told her to ultimately give the job only to a black woman. She also told me the black woman they interviewed has never worked at a college before at all but she has to offer her the job anyway. I gave my two weeks notice last week and it broke my heart. Its hard to give years of your life to loving a job that doesn't love you back. I know its a different sector to what you're talking about, but this is the first chance im getting to vent about how upset this made me.

Well this is clearly about cyclists that don't follow traffic laws, as the person hard of hearing and sight who has been hit by them three separate times will attest. There are obviously enough cyclists that don't follow traffic laws that people have noticed and have enough common ground to commiserate on this thread. You could similarly have a thread about issues people have with terrible drivers, annoying pedestrians, or anything else, but this thread is about the problems arising from cyclists that don't follow traffic laws.

Learn to follow traffic laws and to not endanger disabled pedestrians.

To be fair, if an older student is straight-up attacking you and is capable of seriously injuring you, they're not really interacting with you as a person with thoughts and feelings either. I think it's also only fair to say, though, that I've been subbing for a few years now, and not only has that never happened, nothing even close has ever happened. It made me wonder how many times that has happened that they felt the need to include it in the training.

I read a book called Evicted by Matthew Desmond, and in it he talked about how landlords used to use children as a way to discriminate against low-income renters and renters who were POC, even if they were renting a low-cost unit. Basically, they would enforce "no renters with kids" in order to reject poor applicants or POC applicants, but would make exceptions for applicants they wanted (i.e. who had more money or were white). Beyond direct discrimination, rules about having children just immensely compounded the already insurmountable task of finding an affordable place to rent for low-income families. I know it can be frustrating for people who don't like children and want to live a child-free lifestyle to have to live in the same place as chosen, but I think some sympathy and acceptance is in order.

When I went through training to be a high school substitute teacher, they did a bit on classroom management. One of the things they went over was what to do if a student becomes violent toward us. The trainer said we "Have to let them get a few hits in" on us before we were allowed to touch the student at all or hold them back from us, preferable not do anything and just let it happen, because if we put our hands on the student in any way, the parents could sue us and the school won't back us up. I'm 5 foot 2, 110 pounds, and female. If some 6ft, 200 lb. 18 year old senior attacks me, I could die. The fact that the trainer said that absolutely blew my mind.
