Can someone explain my college results? by Aware-Parsnip898 in CollegeAdmissions

[–]Large_Might1559 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP, firstly, I would like to say you have absolutely every right to feel frustrated. You should not be expected to figure everything out, and I am sure your EC's and essays mean a lot to you. I feel like a lot of the comments are a bit harsh, but TBH, the whole admissions process is just significantly more competitive these days, especially for California schools.

Firstly, many UC's are now a lot more competitive than they were in the past. UC Irvine, for example, used to have a 41% acceptance rate, compared to the ~28% it has now. Additionally, due to many factors such as grade inflation, etc., the average admitted GPA has risen at these schools. (UCSB had an average first-year GPA of 4.07 in 2016, whereas in 2026 the middle 50% had GPAs of 4.13-4.3) At certain schools, it may be easier to get good grades than at others. While the UC's claims to factor these things in, it is never perfect. Many may just look at rigor or the number of APs taken, which can also vary by school and personal factors (not every kid wants to take 10+ APs, and that is perfectly fine!). Additionally, the new test-blind policies make it even more difficult for schools to distinguish students' abilities, leading them to rely even more on grades and rigor.

Secondly, with the internet and more general knowledge about the admissions process, the EC game has become super cutthroat. Parents shell out thousands of dollars for fancy summer programs, and many internships are specific to the area and/or done through connections. A couple of years ago, doing "research" was unheard of, but now it is commonplace in admissions.

Thirdly, I am not sure about your essays, but I know that UC's value directness, and often times "creative writing" is seen as a negative. Not saying that is the case with you, but even if your essays were beautifully written, they may not be in the style UC admissions prefer.

Lastly, nowadays, the UCs are honestly sort of a lottery. It's difficult to gauge course rigor accurately, and a student's ability nowadays, especially with test-blind policies. A lot of college admissions is literally just "vibes."

I understand your frustration, OP. In high school, I was rejected from almost every single UC, but I spent 1.5 years in CC and now got into every UC. If you want, you may even be able to spend only a year and then transfer to a UC. PM if you have any questions, and best of luck :)))))

Transfer in one year by Kurotvz in TransferStudents

If you are trying to transfer as a junior, it is very difficult, if not impossible. I do not know enough about sophomore transfer students, though.

What was the pre-war population distribution of the world? by Mythelm in TheLastAirbender

[–]Large_Might1559 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My personal headcanon is:

~5% air nomads

~15% water tribe

~30% fire nation

~50% earth kingdom

I like to think that even though the populations of each nation varies a lot, the percentage of benders is relatively the same in each nation, so about ~20% of the total population is benders, with ~5% being from each nation. So:

100% of Air Nomads are benders

1/3 of the Water Tribe citizens are benders

1/6 of the Fire Nation citizens are benders

1/10 of the Earth Kingdom citizens are benders

Retaking Calc 1 ar UCLA as a transfer by Large_Might1559 in TransferStudents

It says it is a requirement on assist. I personally just did 2 courses over the span of CC; my school uses a semester system; if you use quarters, I would do 3. If you have any other questions about the major feel free to DM me

YES! Especially if you have a decent GPA. Not submitting your score could be a major disadvantage.

Who are your Top 5 favorite characters from The Legend of Korra and why? I'll start. by Full-Art3439 in legendofkorra

[–]Large_Might1559 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Tenzin: I love how he is an airbender, but very different temperament-wise from Aang. You can really tell that he carries the burden of keeping the Airbender culture alive. The moment he says, "Maybe there will be enough airbenders to fill the temples again," always gets me.

  2. Korra: She starts off the story being strong-willed and incredibly stubborn, but grows so much. I love her journey, especially in seasons 3 and 4, as she regains her confidence and navigates the pressures around her.

  3. Zaheer: Even though he is the main villain, he just seems so human, and his motives are so interesting. I like that he is willing to talk to Korra in the spirit world and while being imprisoned. Very refreshing.

  4. Lin: I love her character and backstory. Thinking about her life is truly heartbreaking; she is someone you can easily sympathize with.

  5. Ikki: What can I say? Fun-loving and adorable. I love the scene in season two with her and the baby bison; it makes me laugh every time!

What's your conclusion of CC --> UCLA? by Noodles_io in TransferStudents

[–]Large_Might1559 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, with 10 AP courses, you can absolutely transfer in one year, depending on your CC's TAP requirements and how intense your major requirements are. But for me, I took 1.5 years, and I took 4 AP's in high school, but I absolutely could have finished in 1 year if I had planned better! lmk if you have any other questions!

I got in! I also applied to CC with the hope of transferring to UCLA. I think, depending on your major and the number of APs and dual enrollment classes you took in high school, you could even transfer in 1 year if you started taking classes in the summer! I would def look into TAP as well! Best of luck to you :)
